Required Materials

It is strongly recommended that you have the items listed below by Week 2 of this course. For questions about storage, equipment, software, etc. see IT Support. For financial assistance inquiries, see University Support.

Storage

At least one external hard drive with a minimum of 1TB of space.

A second hard drive is encouraged.

Additional cloud storage location for your work (Google Drive, box, Canvas, Dropbox or similar application).

Rutgers Gmail integration may come with Google Drive storage.

CSB Media (Computer) Labs

In addition to our class time in a Civic Square Building (CSB) Computer lab, some labs (also on the 2nd floor) are available for you to complete your assignments outside of class.

Some labs are used as classrooms but some may be open 24/7.

Please check the schedules posted outside of each lab, as times may vary.

Any tech requirements listed in required materials may be fulfilled by using computer labs.

Leave the labs as you find them (no trash or liquid; push in your chairs).

Before logging out of (or putting to sleep) lab computers: Save your work on your hard drive or cloud storage (lab computers may not save your files).

Equipment Cage

Assignments for this course may require you to check out equipment from the Art + Design Media Cage via Cheqroom.

Instructions, cage hours, etc.: art.rutgers.edu/cheqroom

Reserve in advance and make multiple reservations if necessary. Late assignments will not be excused for lack of planning around equipment or tech.

Test equipment before use.

Take a photo of the equipment (exterior case and interior) so you know how to pack it when it’s time to return it.

Charge batteries + clear the SD card before returning equipment.

Additional Tech

Internet connection.

QWERTY keyboard for participation in written classroom discussions and writing assignments.

Keyboard or keyboard plugin for the language in which you are most comfortable taking notes.

Smartphone that can record audio and video.

Software

We will be using Adobe Premiere. From MGSA Art + Design, you should have received a license for Adobe Creative Cloud (duration dependent upon semester).

If you plan to run Adobe on your personal computer (instead or in addition to the lab computers), please read the operating system recommendations below.

In order to run, Adobe software requires a computer with at least 8GB of RAM and a Solid State Drive (SSD) with a modern processor (8th gen or newer). An external graphics card is preferred over integrated graphics. More system RAM is better. If you are going to spend more money on upgrades after meeting the minimums below, it is recommended that you increase the RAM first to 16GB. Keep in mind Adobe CC alone uses about 100GB in install space. You may want to look at upgrades if this is an issue. Please note that upgrades may interfere with older versions of Adobe.

Personal Computers

You can complete all of the work for this course using CSB Media Lab computers and are not required to purchase or use a personal computer.

If you are buying a laptop, however, you might choose the Macbook Pro over the air mainly for performance for similarly priced Macbook Air models.

If you don't have a computer that can run Premiere, the Art + Design Department may have some 21.5" iMacs available for check out through Cheqroom.

You may also inquire about borrowing a Chromebook from the department.
