What You Can Do Now
1. Write to the NSW State Government
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully MP:
office@scully.minister.nsw.gov.au, wollongong@parliament.nsw.gov.au
Minister for Housing, Rose Jackson MLC: office@jackson.minister.nsw.gov.au
Points to Consider:
- PRCUTS expansion announcements were made with no community consultation
- A Community Survey from Inner West Council delivered after the announcement stated the expanded plan would 'ensure that new housing in our community is more fairly distributed across the Inner West', when up to 50% of the new dwellings proposed will be concentrated in one small precinct in Leichhardt.
- Inner West Council has misrepresented its community to the State Government. The Our Fairer Future Plan did not have broad community support. Over 80% of survey respondents objected.
- The blanket rezoning of 70% of Leichhardt will lead to mass demolitions and loss of existing affordable housing to make way for new developments
- We demand that the State Government rejects Our Fairer Future and reduces the housing targets along the incorrectly named Parramatta Rd ‘Corridor’.
2. Write to Inner West Councillors
Mayor Darcy Byrne: Darcy.Byrne@innerwest.nsw.gov.au
Leichhardt Ward Councillor Philippa Scott: Philippa.Scott@innerwest.nsw.gov.au
Points to Consider:
- Council has misrepresented its community in its submission to State Government for gazetting Our Fairer Future. It stated there was broad community support for the Plan when it was rejected by 80% of community survey respondents. We expect Council to correctly represent and act in the interests of its community, not the State Government.
- Current Planning Instruments indicate the potential for 10,000 new dwellings in Leichhardt. This is an unacceptable degree of housing and population increase. It creates pressure on transport infrastructure, competition for amenity, reductions in access to open space, environmental degradation, loss of existing affordable housing and mass demolitions to create new developments.
- The Community was not consulted prior to the announcement of the expansion of PRCUTS. The survey released after the announcement stated the plan would 'ensure that new housing in our community is more fairly distributed across the Inner West', when up to 50% of new dwelling will concentrated in one small Leichhardt precinct.
- We demand that rezoning and strategic, nuanced planning for our suburb is revisited by Council to includes robust and meaningful community consultation, and that housing targets are reduced across our suburb, including along the Parramatta Rd ‘Corridor’.
