Topic 3: Trying out laboratory equipment
Aim or purpose:
- Measure and exact amount of sugar and dissolve in water to make a solution
Equipment
- A weighing machine or pair of scales
- A petri dish
- Table sugar
- Two 200ml beakers
- Water in a pouring container
- A pipette (or dropper)
- Spatula
Method:

Cold Water Experiment:
- First pour 100ml of cold water into the beaker
- Next use a thermometer and see the temperature of the water
- After that get 10 grams of sugar and put it on a petri dish
- Place the petri dish and put it on a weighing machine
- After that put the 10 grams of sugar and put in the beaker
- Next stir the sugar and water together
- By using a stopwatch I timed my partner and see how long it took for the sugar to dissolve in the water
Results:
Temperature - 24 degrees celsius
Time - 1 minute 31 seconds
Hot Water Experiment:
- First pour 100ml of hot water into the beaker
- Next use a thermometer and see the temperature of the water
- After that get 10 grams of sugar and put it on a petri dish
- Place the petri dish and put it on a weighing machine
- After that put the 10 grams of sugar and put it in the beaker
- Next stir the sugar and water together
- By using a stopwatch I timed my partner and see how it took for the sugar to dissolve in the water
Results:
Temperature - 83 degrees celsius
Time - 35 seconds
