For parents

Parents should now, at what time and degree of hearing loss Cochlear Implantation is meeningful. They should also be informed, that the risk of CI is getting smaller depending on the reduced surgical access (reduced to 4 cm skin incision).

For experts

Therapists will learn about the indications of CI. Thy will be informed about the minimal invasive surgical acess.

The topic

Nowadays we are using a minimal invasive surgical access of about 4 cm skin incision for CI. Also the indication area  for CI has greatly expanded in the last years.

The speaker

Dr. Astrid Magele is a surgeon at the ENT department at the University clinic of St.Poelten. Her interests are focused on Otology and Neurotology. She does general ear surgeries, cochlear implantations, and implantations of bone conductive hearing aids.
Since January 2015 she is the head of the “Hearing impaired program” of St.Poelten. She is member of the Otology group of Prof. GM Sprinzl since June 2008.

Her habilitation took place in the University clinic of Innsbruck in October 2016 with the thesis ‘New indications in the hearing rehabilitation with hearing implants’.

Uniquely for a surgeon, Dr. Magele has a degree of Master of Business Administration in Health Care Management from the Danube University of Krems (November 2018). The title of the thesis was ‘Evaluation of quality and effectiveness from support groups for rare diseases at the example of the ‘Forum for Usher Syndrome’.
