COSPLAY DIVISION CLASSIFICATION (CDC)

BACKGROUNDER/ BRIEF

Traditionally, Cosplayers in competitions have been classified according to the source material of their costume (ie. Anime, Video Game, Comic Book) or an abstract of the materials contained in their costume (ie. Cloth, Armor, Mecha). The problem with this system is that, more often than not, these classifications often overlap and/or are very difficult to distinguish from one another.

The Cosplay Division Classification (CDC) was designed to address this problem by creating classifications or Classes that can be used to define distinct Cosplay Divisions. This new system will be used to organize competitors in respective groups for the purposes of organization, order of appearance on-stage and/or to determine special awards.

DIVISIONS (CLASSES)
The CDC is composed of Three (3) Classes based on the composition of the costumes entered in the contest. Verification of these Classes can be done from a cursory inspection of the costume itself or gleamed as an observation of the reference photo supplied to the registration team. The Class Divisions are as follows:

Division 1: Agility Class - This includes all participants aged 13 or above, and the costumes in this class have the following characteristics:

1) The costume must contain mostly light-weight, pliant material such as cloth;

2) Any foam-assisted rubber, foam, metal, plastic, fiberglass or any other non-pliant material must be in the form of accessories and props only;

3) Any handheld or attached props  must not exceed the natural height of the Cosplayer;

4) Any accessories or attachments such as wings must not increase the natural height or

width of a Cosplayer by more than 20.4 cm (8 inches).

Examples: Sailor Moon, Naruto, and Goku from Dragonball Z.

Division 2: Hybrid Class - This includes all participants aged 13 or above, and the costumes in this class have the following characteristics:

1) The costume must contain mostly light-weight, pliant material such as cloth;

2) Any foam-assisted rubber, foam, metal, plastic, fiberglass or any other rigid material must be in the form of armor pieces, accessories and props only. These armor pieces, accessories or props may enclose a maximum of seventy percent (70%) of the contestant's  body.

3) Any props may exceed the natural height of the Cosplayer;

4) Any accessories or attachments such as wings or armor pieces  must not increase the              natural height or width of a Cosplayer by more than 20.4 cm (8 inches).

Examples: Kayle from League of Legends and Barbarian from Diablo 3.

Division 4: Assault Class - This includes all participants aged 13 or above, and their costume must have the following characteristics:

1) The costume may contain any amount of foam-assisted rubber, foam, metal, plastic,

fiber-glass or any other non-cloth material which may enclose up to the entire body of the Cosplayer;

2) Any props may exceed the natural height of the Cosplayer;

3) Any armor pieces, accessories or props may increase the height and/or width of the Cosplayer by 20.4 cm (8 inches).

Examples: Iron Man, Master Chief from Halo, Gundam Mobile Suits and Optimus Prime from Transformers.

CLASS ADJUSTMENT
Upon registration of the Cosplay contestant, they are asked to provide a Division Classification or Class to their Cosplay costume. The submitted photos are then examined by the registration team to ensure that the Class of the contestant is correct. Should there be any discrepancies, the registration team may solicit an adjudicator to rule on the proper Class of the contestant. All rulings made by the adjudicator is final and cannot be appealed.
