ENGLISH SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES         NAG 1 Curriculum

(ESOL)

Rationale

English Speakers of Other languages need extra support to learn and become proficient users of English.

Purposes

Guidelines

  1. ESOL forms will be completed and submitted to MOE to secure extra funding.
  2. Progress will be closely monitored.
  3. All ESOL funded students will be identified on the Special Needs/ESOL Register and will receive extra support for English Language Learning or have access to specific ESOL resources.
  4. Teachers will use the ELLP and SELLPS  for guidance in planning and assessment.
  5. The first language of ESOL students will be valued and promoted where possible.
  6. ESOL information will be collected on Enrolment.

        Assessment

                   Oral

                   assessment         twice yearly (June and December) using the ESOL

                                    matrix

                      Writing           Asttle rubric will be used to include in school wide                        data

ESOL matrix will be used to assess writing to inform teaching.

           Reading        STAR will be used for ESOL students who have 2 years at NZ school.

PM/PROBE will be used for ESOL students to measure progress in comparison to native speakers of English.
