Editor’s Corner

Jai Jinendra,

The time of Paryushan gives us a special opportunity to reflect upon the past year and our behaviors to ourselves and to others.

It is an opportunity that we, as Jains, set aside to seek forgiveness from those, to whom we may have caused harm. And equally important, to find the strength to forgive those, who may have harmed us.

We take this opportunity, and on this very auspicious occasion, to say that if we have hurt you, knowingly or unknowingly, we sincerely ask for your forgiveness …

On behalf of the entire JSCNC Committee …

Food Volunteers & Sponsors Needed

This year, on average, 150 headcounts including kids, are attending monthly meetings. Our current group of volunteers can only support to prepare food for 100 head count. In order to support our monthly meeting food need for 150, we require 6 additional volunteers to prepare food in monthly meetings (3 volunteers for each alternate month). Unfortunately, the alternative for the lack of volunteers means that we have to either order some food from outside, which requires additional sponsors, or a reduction in the quantity of food that can be served.  So, please consider joining our fine group of volunteers for preparing food for the monthly meetings.  It is a great way to give back to the community.  Please contact Ajaybhai, our Food Coordinator this year, for more information and to sign-up.

Additionally, as a small community, any changes in attendance can mean the difference between a lot of food left over or not enough food for all our members.  As you can imagine, and probably also experienced, this can lead to frustration on both sides.  As an example, in last month's meeting, there was a considerably low turnout.  However, only a few members had informed Ajaybhai about it.  We would humbly request, that we all be mindful of the wastage of food, time and energy of all the volunteers preparing the food.  Please take a few minutes to inform Ajaybhai if your plans regarding attendance to the meetings change.  This will help tremendously to make the correct plans for food and avoid wastage and/or insufficient food.

Youth Event - Durham Food Bank Volunteer Opportunity

We have organized a volunteering opportunity on Saturday, October 20th from 9am-12pm at the Durham Food Bank.  It helps encourage bonding amongst our JSCNC youth and promotes community service. More information will be shared via email later on.

In addition, the JSCNC team is very well respected by CWS (Church World Service) for our volunteering and fiscal management of the walk since 2008.

This year, JSCNC's goal is $2000.00. We have already collected $100.00.

Most of the donation is used for various programs like providing water for irrigation, and other similar projects to become self sufficient and end hunger. If you would like to donate towards this cause, please make a donation in one of the following ways:

4. Food Table Corner

Food served during monthly meetings and special events has played a vital role in building our community over the years. It has enabled us to spend quality time to learn Jainism and socialize with other fellow Jains without having to worry about our usual lunch/dinner planning that day. In fact it has also served as an incentive to come together and promote our community. This wouldn't have been possible without the hard work and monetary donations from several individuals. We are extremely grateful for their efforts and thank them for their continued contributions. Visit the following link to find more details on these individuals.

2018 Food Volunteers & Sponsors

Note that as our community has grown over the years, sustaining the food table program has become challenging. We encourage you to help us here by volunteering to serve as a host, volunteering to prepare food or providing monetary donation so that some food items can be catered.

Please contact our food coordinator, Mr. Ajay Shah @ (919) 601-2624 for any questions / details.
