As well represented by Greta Thunberg (TIME 2019 Person of the Year), young people are increasingly taking up climate activism across the globe. INDIANA IS NO EXCEPTION. Last month, two high school students were recognized as "Hoosier Resilience Heroes" by Indiana University's ERI (Environmental Resilience Institute) for their contributions to their communities and the environment (ERI, IU). Angel-Hannah Akinleye (a senior at Riverside High School in Indianapolis), on the one hand, has led her voice to the importance of environmental justice and climate literacy in her community as a student director of Youth Environmental Press Team at her school and a member of the Indianapolis Mayor's Youth Leadership Council. Ethan Bledsoe (a junior at West Lafayette Junior-Senior High School), on the other hand, contributed to West Lafayette’s climate resolution and climate emergency declaration. He also confounded the youth-led West Lafayette Climate Strike, helped launch the Confront the Climate Crisis, a statewide network for student climate activists, and developed the Climate Kidz, a climate resilience campaign. In addition, a climate strike was held by high school students at the Indiana Statehouse in March. There, high school students urged the state to declare a statewide climate emergency and demanded an immediate climate action plan. They stated that “The climate crisis is here, but Indiana has never treated it as what it is—a crisis. It is unacceptable to deny this fact as rising sea levels, droughts, wildfire and hurricanes undoubtedly destroy our country. Indiana has refused to take the necessary actions to prevent further global warming.” If declared, Indiana would become the first state in the U.S. to proclaim a climate emergency. A poll conducted by the Washington Post showed that more than half of American teens are scared about climate change (Washington Post).

ANSWER
"Temperatures are projected to rise about 5°F to 6°F by mid-century. A rising average temperature increases the chance of extreme heat and reduces the chance of extreme cold, and it also changes the timing and length of the frost-free season when plants grow. These shifts will impact air quality, extend the growing season and the allergy season, and create more favorable conditions for some pests and invasive species." [RELATED MATH WORKSHEETS] HOW MUCH DOES SEA LEVEL RISE? Scientific research indicates that the global sea level has risen by about 8-9 inches since 1880 (NOAA, 2019). However, the current annual rate is roughly twice the average speed of a century ago. (Read more...)
