Growing Center & Spring Study Sites Work & Events Logs

Community-based Citizen Science in Massachusetts Parks & Reservations

This fieldwork journal covers all the EwA site study activities happening at the Somerville growing Center (fieldwork sessions and events). Specifically, we conduct 2 kinds of arthropod survey at the center, which are part of the Plant Visitor Program: (1) An insect photo survey and (2) a caterpillar count.

For details about the general program, and the arthropod program & its survey methods, please see:

Session Records

Notes | Author: Claire
  • Biodiversity: A few bees, primarily bumblebees and honeybees. Spotted a monarch / The center hosts a few common milkweed plants.
  • Having 2 count circles is probably doable, although a little stretch with a few less trees than last year. But we’ll try.
  • Habitat disturbance type: high human activity + noise pollution.

Observation of the Day: a hopper  [iNat record >]

Notes | Author: Claire

⚠️ We lost FCR and FCR to trimming. That's unfortunate as accessible branches with 50 leaves are hard to find

→ Moved FCN to the back of the tree on the upper path above the light wood bench.

→ Moved FCR a bit in, above the grass patch just above the stone circle path.

⚠️ Observed kids trampling the native garden just below the linden on the upper path. Raised awareness about the native garden both to the kids and to the tutors.

🔎 Spotted a monarch, Bumblebees, Hoverflies, a couple of wasps.

🔎 The CC count was very low, but the native garden was relatively busy. We spotted a Swallowtail,  Cabbage white, a carpenter bee, western honey bees, common eastern bumble bees, a sweat bee, and 4 impressive Great Black Digger wasps.

→ It was on the cooler side, with some wind. This might be factors to the low count today on our marked trees.

→ Note that the Growing Center site is now listed and described in the EwA Plant Visitor protocol.
