Hot off the presses is the 5th edition of District 64’s 1:1 Learning Ecosystem Student-Parent Handbook. This newly updated handbook reflects all that our community continues to learn and develop our learning ecosystem. It still features all the essentials students and parents/guardians need to efficiently navigate through an enhanced learning environment with a Chromebook in the hands of every grades 3-8 student in our District.
This handbook is designed to provide answers to the fundamentals. It pulls together all the policies, procedures, and other details you need in one handy place. We recommend that every family take a “now” and “later” approach by:

Teachers set up various activities, projects, and learning paths that lead to the academic and personal growth of students. In the 1:1 Digital Learning Program, technology tools have been provided for students to activate and amplify their self-directed learning. District 64’s ongoing mission is to have our students be inspired to discover, learn, achieve, and care.

The focus of the District 64 1:1 Digital Learning Program is to provide tools and resources to the 21st Century learner. Excellence in education requires that technology be seamlessly integrated throughout the educational program. According to studies and school reports, students who use a computing device in a 1:1 educational environment are more organized engaged learners, attend school more regularly, advance their knowledge and understanding of technology, and become constructors and designers of information and ideas (Bebell, 2005). Increasing access to technology is essential for that future, and various tools have been made available for these 21st Century learners which access G Suite for Education and other cloud computing resources. The mobility (anywhere, anytime) and individualized use of the technology is a way to empower students to maximize their learning and practice 21st Century skills of critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration.
Learning happens from a continuous dynamic interaction among students, educators, parents, and community at large. Technology immersion does not diminish the vital role of the teacher. Effective teaching and 1:1 access to a device and resources set up the best conditions for learning.
The policies, procedures, and information within this document apply to all technology devices used for educational purposes at Park Ridge-Niles District 64 – including Chromebooks, laptops, iPads, and any other device considered by the District to come under this handbook. Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their classroom and integration with curriculum and instruction.
A District-owned technology device (i.e. Chromebook, iPad, Apple laptop, etc) may be provided for your student in support of identified learning goals. Before the device can be issued to the student, parents and students must:
The District-owned device will be provided a case specified by the district, teacher, administrator, or assistive technology consultant. The student is expected to keep the device in its issued case at all times.
Chromebooks for grades 3-5 will be distributed through the classroom by the student’s teacher. Before the device can be issued to the student, parents and students must:
New students/3rd grade parent-student orientations to the 1:1 Digital Learning Program will be hosted by elementary school building. These orientations will help families who are new to this learning ecosystem to become better acquainted with the ins and outs of anytime, anywhere learning.
Upon payment of the 1:1 Learning Technology Support Fee (formerly known as the Chromebook Maintenance Fee), a student will be assigned a District-owned Chromebook and charger as well as provided a standard-issue case, accessory pouch, and strap. This fee was collected at the time of registration through Infosnap. If the 1:1 Learning Technology Support Fee is not paid, a Chromebook will not be assigned to the student. Students are expected to take the Chromebook in the case to and from school.
Chromebooks for grades 6-8 will be distributed through homerooms on the first day of classes. Parents and students must review, acknowledge and adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) through registration and the Chromebook Commitment Pledge (See Appendix 10.1) through homerooms during the first week of school. Upon payment of the 1:1 Learning Technology Support Fee (formerly known as the Chromebook Maintenance Fee), a student will be assigned a District-owned Chromebook and charger as well as provided a standard-issue case, strap, and accessory pouch (Brenthaven cases only). This fee was collected at the time of registration through Infosnap. If the 1:1 Learning Technology Support Fee is not paid, a Chromebook will not be assigned to the student. Students are expected to take the Chromebook in the case to and from school. The student must also use the case in the hallway when traveling to the different classes.
The District-issued device (i.e. Chromebook, iPad, Apple laptop, etc) with case and accessories will be returned to the school during the final weeks of each school year as facilitated by the classroom or homeroom teacher. If a student transfers out of District 64 during the school year, the device shall be returned to the school office at that time. Students who withdraw, are expelled, or terminate enrollment at the school for any other reason, must return this District-issued device with case and all the accessories on the date of termination to the school office. Incident charges will be assessed where applicable. If invoices are not paid, the Chromebook will not be returned to your student until the incident charge is paid in full.
If a student fails to return the District-owned device at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment at a District 64 school, this inaction will result in a theft report being filed with the Park Ridge Police Department or the Niles Police Department, depending on the school location. The student/parents will be expected to pay the replacement cost of the device and case including accessories (pouch, strap, power adapter, cables, etc.).
Furthermore, if the student does not return the device in proper working condition or is damaged beyond normal wear and tear, the student will be responsible for paying the per-incident charge or cost of replacement as determined by the Technology Department in conjunction with teachers and school administration. The student must return the device with case and all the accessories to the School Technology Office or Learning Resource Center (LRC). Any needed repairs will be managed under the 1:1 Digital Learning Technology Support Plan. Accessories will need to be replaced at cost.
The 1:1 Technology device is District property and all users will follow this handbook and the District 64 Acceptable Use Policy for the care and maintenance of this technology. Students are responsible for the general care of the device they have been issued whether on or off campus. Devices that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Building Technologist in the Technology Department via the School Technology Office or the Learning Resource Center (LRCs) as soon as possible for an evaluation of the device.
The protective carrying cases provided with the Chromebooks have sufficient padding to protect the device under normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the device to, from, and within the school. The guidelines below should be followed:
Any iPads issued to a student for assistive technology purposes will be provided in a secure case. This case will protect the iPad through normal treatment of the device. The guidelines below should be followed:
An Apple laptop issued to a student for assistive technology purposes will be provided a protective carrying case with sufficient padding to protect the device under normal treatment. This carrying case will also provide a suitable means for carrying the Apple laptop to, from, and within school. The guidelines below should be followed:
The 1:1 technology device is intended for use at school each day. In addition to teacher expectations for device use, classroom protocols, school messages, announcements, calendars and schedules may be accessed using the student G Suite for Education account. Students are responsible for bringing their technology devices to all classes unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher.
A limited number of Chromebook “loaners” are available from the LRC, but loaner devices are prioritized for situations where a student’s District-assigned Chromebook is out for repair. Loaners may not be the same model as the student’s District-assigned Chromebook.
If a student leaves his/her Chromebook at home, s/he is responsible for getting the course work completed when reunited with the device (i.e., using other tools in the meantime like paper/pen). In these cases of forgetfulness, checking out a loaner Chromebook may not be an option should the school’s LRC not have enough on hand. Loaner devices are for in-school use only and must be returned to the LRC before the end of the school day.
If a student repeatedly leaves the device at home, interventions will be put into place by the teacher and/or administrator, consistent across a grade level, similar to issues like homework or instructional materials or other classroom procedures. Further disciplinary actions or behavioral interventions may be taken if a student continues to be unsuccessful in meeting this expectation.
The 1:1 Technology device must be brought to school each day in a fully charged condition. Students need to charge the District-assigned device every evening or over the weekend. Repeat failures to meet this expectation will result in interventions put into place by teachers and/or administrators.
Inappropriate media may not be used as an avatar, screen saver or wallpaper photo. Inappropriate media includes, but is not limited to, the following: the presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug, gang related symbols or pictures. Use of such media will result in disciplinary actions.
Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Internet games not assigned by the teacher are not allowed on the District-issued device. If game apps are installed, it will be at the discretion and guidance of a teacher or administrator. All District-provided software/apps are distributed through the Google Management Console or the Mobile Device Management system. Data storage will be through District 64’s G Suite for Education accounts.
Although Chromebooks and iPads were designed to foster a digital environment, Internet or cloud printing protocols may be utilized. For Chromebooks, you may reference Google Cloud Print support documentation for home printing setup. For iPads, you may reference AirPrint support documentation on an Airprint-enabled printer at home.
Printing at school is facilitated through current workstations and labs. Printing from a Chromebook or iPad will not be widely available. Printing is possible through document collaboration, specified workstations, and lab settings throughout a school building.
Students will need to set up their District-assigned Chromebook on their (home) wireless network.
1. In the lower right hand corner you’ll see a WiFi icon. Click on the icon.
2. You will then see a menu with options. Click on Network/WiFi. This will prompt the device to scan for wireless networks available. Find your home network and click.
3. You will be prompted through your home wifi security requirements (i.e., password).
It is incumbent upon parents to monitor and manage student Internet activity or screen time while at home. It is the prerogative of the parents to limit or restrict Chromebook or Internet use at home.
Students will need to set up their District-assigned iPad on their (home) wireless network.
The District understands that not all families have access to the Internet at home. The District will work with families to find solutions that work best for that student. Upon application and assistance approval, a subsidized solution is Comcast Internet Essentials. The Park Ridge and Niles libraries also offer free wireless Internet for all patrons.
Each student is issued a District 64 G Suite for Education account under the D64.org domain. Students will use this single account throughout their academic career in District 64.
Students will save data, work and files directly into their district G Suite for Education accounts or on various Web 2.0 sites (a.k.a. “in the cloud”, linked to their G Suite for Education account credentials). Please note that storage space is very limited on the Chromebook. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to accidental deletion. Chromebook malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not handing in school work. Please work with your teacher, Instructional Technology Coach, or building technologist to establish offline access to files. Furthermore, teachers, the Instructional Technology Coach, or Building Technologist at your school will help to retrieve files or data when there is a device malfunction.
Keep your passwords safe and private at all times. If you feel that your password security has been breached, contact your teacher, Instructional Technology Coach, or Building Technologist for assistance.
In support of anytime, anywhere learning in the 1:1 Learning Program and in accordance with the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA), the District has invested in providing an open and secure Internet experience for our students on and off campus as Chromebooks are utilized as their learning tool and resource. The Securly unified filtering system offers a seamless integration with the Chromebook and a cloud architecture to assign policies that will enhance the learning environment. A list of blocked sites organized in categories is maintained in the Securly database and online activity is filtered accordingly. Securly constantly adds new websites to its database to ensure coverage for your student and currently filters over a million websites.
Internet activity is tracked in one month time spans -- general keywords searched, blocked sites attempted to be accessed, top sites searched, and top offenders. Data may be reviewed by administrators, teachers, social workers, and counselors if there is cause for concern. In those situations, parents will be notified of the data review. Parents may also review student Internet activity through the Securly Parent Portal once they have signed up.
Securly includes a “handbrake” feature where students are locked out of use on their D64 G Suite for Education account for inappropriate or blocked searches. Students will receive a filtered message informing them that they are currently locked out of using their device. This temporary locking feature attempts to give students a moment to consider appropriate use of their District provided device and resolves itself after a period of time.
Once a Chromebook is logged in with a district G Suite for Education account, the Securly filtering extension is installed. This means that District filtering policies will be set on that device. In order to uninstall the Securly extension, a Chromebook must be reset to factory settings. The Securly extension does not adhere to a Chrome browser situation, only to actual Chromebook devices.
The Securly Parent Portal provides parents access to view your student’s online activities and productivity on school-owned devices. Parents are emailed weekly Internet activity reports and go to the parent portal to view flagged activity. Parents will be able to block websites at your discretion when students are off-campus. Parents will also see all your children’s activity from one dashboard. To assist parents in developing a responsible internet oversight protocol, Securly provides the Securly Parent Portal – a service that informs parents of their child’s internet activity. To find out more about the Securly Parent Portal and how it will assist you in monitoring your student’s online activity, click here.
For Chromebook users in grades 5-8, in addition to blocking inappropriate websites and online material, the service also endeavors to alert the District if a student is engaged in any activity on a school-issued Chromebook that indicates the student may be considering self-harm, harming others, or is involved in cyber-bullying. Securly 24 provides around the clock monitoring on District-issued Chromebooks for our students. In the event Securly 24 detects this type of content, it will contact your student’s school Administrator. Upon receiving the information, the Administrator will attempt to contact parents for those incidents that need to be addressed immediately.
Kindly note, however, that while Securly 24, is a useful tool to assist in attempting to keep our students safe and alerting us of possible issues, it is not foolproof for determining when a student might take harmful action. Thus, parents must not rely solely on Securly 24 to detect inappropriate internet searches that might be related to self-harm, harming others, or cyber-bullying. We encourage parents to talk with their children about the benefits of the internet as well as the dangers and to take an active role in monitoring internet usage and their student’s social and emotional wellbeing.
All Chrome apps and extensions are managed and distributed by the District. If you discover an app or extension that is useful in the pursuit of learning, discuss this with your teacher, Instructional Technology Coach, or Building Technologist.
The Chrome apps and extensions incorporated by District 64 are propagated through District G Suite for Education accounts. From time to time the school or District may add apps/extensions for use in a particular course. Periodic checks of Chromebooks will be made to ensure that students have not removed required apps or have added apps that are not authorized by the school or District.
You will be able to login to your District Google Suite account from other devices that either have a browser, or specifically the Chrome browser, available to run the Chrome OS. These apps and extensions will install on any device running the Chrome browser or Chrome OS.
Students may be selected at random to provide their Chromebook for inspection by staff for rogue apps or extensions.
If technical difficulties occur, illegal software or jailbreaking (modify an electronic device to remove restrictions imposed by the manufacturer or operator) has been done, or non-District 64 apps are discovered, the Chromebook will be restored to factory state by the school’s Building Technologist or member of the Technology Department. The student and parent must work in conjunction with District 64 technology support staff to re-establish any District-owned extensions and apps through the district Google Suite account.
The school does not accept responsibility for the loss of any data or documents deleted, due to a reformat, in order to rectify a violation.
The use of District 64’s technology equipment and network is a privilege, not a right. The privilege of using the technology resources provided by District 64 is not transferable by a student to people or groups outside the District and terminates when a student is no longer enrolled in Park Ridge-Niles District 64 schools. This handbook is provided to make all users aware of the responsibilities associated with efficient, ethical, and lawful use of the Chromebook computer. If a person violates any of the Policies, Procedures and Information contained in this handbook, privileges may be terminated, access to the District’s technology resources may be denied, and the appropriate disciplinary action shall be applied.
The act of jailbreaking a Chromebook or iPad voids any warranty and is in strict violation of the Acceptable Use Policy and the guidelines in this handbook. Technology privileges will be terminated and appropriate disciplinary action shall be applied.
Internet access is available on every computer with network access in Park Ridge-Niles District 64. The Network Manager and Technology Department will make reasonable efforts to maintain reliable service. They cannot, however, absolutely guarantee that the network will always be available or operating correctly. Student users should assume that none of their data is private or confidential. Any communication or data may be subject to review by network or school administration.
The user is responsible for what he/she says and does with the computer device and on the network. Communication with thousands of others is quick and easy. Therefore, it is important for the user to stop and think before communicating and to show respect for other people and for their ideas.
A crucial part of the 1:1 Digital Learning Program is encouraging a strong partnership between teachers, parents and students. When students are using their District G Suite for Education account, ultimately, they are held responsible to the expectations of District 64. This means that any inappropriate usage at home can still affect the learning process in the classroom. Parents are responsible for managing and monitoring technology device (i.e. Chromebook) usage when at home. Teachers are expected to monitor student G Suite for Education account activity, as it can affect the learning process. Teachers will have access to all students’ Google Drive documents and activity.
The discipline procedure in the District 64 Student-Parent Handbook addresses serious and
major offenses such as stealing and destruction of school or personal property, which applies to the Chromebook or any technology device. Depending on the seriousness of the offense, students may lose Chromebook and/or technology resource/network privileges as well as being held for detention, suspension or even in extreme cases, expulsion. The commitment is to foster essential skills and behavior by restoring trust and responsibility in positive digital citizenship.
Student Chromebooks will be labeled in the manner specified by the school district. Chromebooks can be identified in the following ways:
When an elementary student is not using his/her device during school, the teacher will have a designated Chromebook storage area in the classroom, the Chromebook can NOT be stored inside the desk. Nothing should be placed on top of the Chromebook. All Chromebook accessories should only be stored inside the separate accessory pouch. When the Chromebook is taken to and from school, the Chromebook should be kept in its carrying case whenever possible. Students are expected to take their Chromebooks home every day after school, regardless of whether or not they are needed. Chromebooks should not be stored in a vehicle at school or at home.
When a middle school student is not using his/her device, the Chromebook should be stored in the provided carrying case in his/her locked locker. The middle school requires that a student use the combination lock provided by the school district to secure the locker. Nothing should be placed on top of the Chromebook in the carrying case when stored in the locker. All Chromebook accessories should only be stored inside the separate accessory pouch. Students are expected to take their Chromebooks home every day after school, regardless of whether or not they are needed. Chromebooks should not be stored in a vehicle at school or at home.
Under no circumstances should Chromebooks be left in unsupervised areas. Any Chromebook left unattended in these areas is in danger of being lost or stolen. If a Chromebook is found in an unsupervised area, it will be taken to the Library Resource Center or School Office to be reclaimed by the student. Repeated offenses will be addressed by the classroom teacher and/or administrator with a plan for intervention.
Park Ridge-Niles School District 64 recognizes that with the implementation of the 1:1 Digital Learning Program, there is a need to protect the investment by both the District and the Student/Parent. The 1:1 Digital Learning Technology Support Plan consists of several components for upkeep, maintenance, repair, and support of technology devices used for student learning. The following section outlines the areas of protection.
Chromebooks are central to the 1:1 Digital Learning Program for students in Grades 3-8. The 1:1 Digital Learning Technology Support Plan for Chromebooks is as outlined below:
If the Chromebook assigned to your student is in need of technical support, the Chromebook must be brought to the Technology Department via the School Technology Office or Learning Resource Center (LRC) for technical attention, damage assessment or determination of malfunction. The types of damage may include, but are not limited to: cracked screens, broken hinges, missing keyboard pieces, cracked plastic pieces, damaged ports, frayed cables, liquid damage, and inoperability of any kind.
The Chromebooks have been purchased by the District and carry a standard 1-year warranty plus an additional 3-year coverage term. The District 64 Technology Department will manage the facilitation of all warranty repairs. Warranty repairs do not include accidental damage. Students waiting for warranty repair will have a loaner device that can be taken to and from school.
The 1:1 Digital Learning Technology Support Plan requires an annual fee of $30 paid by Students/Parents as described above. This 1:1 Learning Technology Support Fee (formerly known as the “Chromebook Maintenance Fee”) must be paid before the student is assigned and provided a Chromebook for use, unless the student qualifies for a fee waiver under Board policy. The $30 fee is collected during student registration through InfoSnap. This is separate and different from a per-incident charge outlined in section 9.1.3.
All repair and replacement claims must be reported to the District 64 Technology Department through the School Technology Offices/Learning Resource Centers (LRCs). The device must be turned into the Technology Department for investigation of the reported issue. In cases of fire, theft, or other criminal acts, a copy of the police/fire report must be made, and a copy of the report must be provided to the Technology Department. An per-incident charge will be assessed when repairs or replacement of the device is necessary after the investigation of the incident by school staff determines that the incident was a result of accidental damage. Students waiting for repair will have a loaner device made available for in-school use.
Damage to minor components is considered Level 1 and a $10 additional incident charge will be issued. Damage to major components or multiple minor components is considered Level 2 and a per incident charge of $30 will be issued. Damage to a touchscreen is considered Level 3 and a per incident charge of $70 will be issued. Damage that is purely cosmetic in nature as determined by the Technology Department will not be repaired unless there is reasonable concern it will lead to further issues.

Should the actual cost of repair exceed 50% of the cost of purchasing a new device, the student/parents will need to invoke the one-time full-replacement coverage of the 1:1 Digital Learning Technology Support Plan (refer to section 9.0), for which a $50 incident charge for a Level 2 Damage will be assessed. Touchscreen Chromebook screen replacements have an incident charge of $70. Parents will be charged the actual replacement cost for lost or damaged items such as cases and cables.
If invoices are not paid, the Chromebook will not be returned to your student until the incident charge is paid in full.
If it has been determined by the School or District that there was loss or damage of a District-owned Chromebook due to misuse, neglect, misconduct, or vandalism, even while in school, then the student’s parents are responsible for full payment of repair of damage or full replacement value, as determined by the school administration and the District 64 Technology Department.
Based on the level of damage assessed by the District 64 Technology Department or replacement of accessory, an invoice email will be issued to the student’s parents detailing the damaged assessed, the per-incident charge, and/or the cost of replacement (i.e for the Chromebook, stylus, power adapter, case, or other accessories) required. Incident charge or Chromebook/accessory replacement payment must be made to the District 64 Business Office and can be done online in accordance with the invoice issued. The Chromebook will not be reissued to a student if there are outstanding unpaid charges.
If this is the first instance of replacement during a refresh cycle and the lost device is later found within 30 days of when the incident was reported and both the lost device and replacement device are in satisfactory condition as determined by a member of the D64 Technology Department, the following will ensue:

For Apple Devices
Apple devices would include iPads and Apple Macbook laptops. An Apple device may be assigned to a student in cases of assistive technology or other individualized education plans.
The Apple devices have been purchased by the District and carry a standard 1-year warranty. The District 64 Technology Department will manage the facilitation of all warranty repairs. Warranty repairs do not include accidental damage.

Repair charges or replacement payment must be made at the District 64 Business Office and can be done online. The payment for the replacement of an accessory (i.e., cables, power adapters, case) must be submitted by check payable to ”School District 64” to the Building Technologist via the School Technology Office/Learning Resource Center (LRC).
If a lost Apple device is later found and both the lost device and replacement device are in satisfactory condition, the cost of replacement will be refunded.
The Student-Parent Commitment Pledge is provided herein on the next page for students in grades 3-8. This pledge should be reviewed and signed by parents and students each year.

Electronic networks, including the Internet, are a part of the District's instructional program in order to promote educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication. The Superintendent or designee shall develop an implementation plan for this policy and appoint a system administrator.
The School District is not responsible for any information that may be lost, damaged, or unavailable when using the network, or for any information that is retrieved or transmitted via the Internet. Furthermore, the District will not be responsible for any unauthorized charges or fees resulting from access to the Internet.
The use of the District’s electronic networks shall (1) be consistent with the curriculum adopted by the District as well as the varied instructional needs, learning styles, abilities, and developmental levels of the students and (2) comply with the selection criteria for instructional materials and library resource center materials. As required by federal law and Board policy 6:60, Curriculum Content, students will be educated about appropriate online behavior, including but not limited to: (1) interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and (2) cyber-bullying awareness prevention, and response. Staff members may, consistent with the Superintendent's implementation plan, use the Internet throughout the curriculum.
The District’s electronic network is part of the curriculum and is not a public forum for general use.
All use of the District's electronic networks must be (1) in support of education and/or research, and be in furtherance of the Board of Education's stated goal or (2) for a legitimate school business purpose. Use is a privilege, not a right. Students and staff members have no expectation of privacy in any material that is stored, transmitted, or received via the District’s electronic network or District computers. General rules for behavior and communications apply when using the electronic networks. The District's Authorization for Electronic Network Access contains the appropriate uses, ethics, and protocol. Electronic communications and downloaded material, including files deleted from a user's account but not erased, may be monitored or read by school officials.
Technology protection measures shall be used on each District computer with Internet access. They shall include a filtering device that protects against Internet access by both adults and minors to visual depictions that are (1) obscene, (2) pornographic, or (3) harmful or inappropriate for students, as defined by the Children’s Internet Protection Act and as determined by the Superintendent or designee. The Superintendent or designee shall enforce the use of such filtering devices. An administrator, supervisor, or other authorized person may disable the filtering device for bona fide research or other lawful purpose, provided the person receives prior permission from the Superintendent or system administrator. The Superintendent or designee shall include measures in this policy’s implementation plan to address the following:
Each student/parent must agree to the District's Authorization for Electronic Network Access as a condition for using the District's electronic network. Each student and his or her parent(s)/guardian(s) must sign the Authorization before being granted unsupervised use.
All users of the District’s computers to access the Internet shall maintain the confidentiality of student records. Reasonable measures to protect against unreasonable access shall be taken before confidential student information is loaded onto the network.
The failure of any student or staff member to follow the terms of the Authorization for Electronic Network Access or this policy, may result in the loss of privileges, disciplinary action, and/or appropriate legal action.
Annually, parents with students are required to review this Authorization during the registration process. Parents completed this as part of the InfoSnap annual updating of student information.
All use of the Internet shall be consistent with the District's goal of promoting educational excellence by facilitating resource sharing, innovation, and communication. This Authorization does not attempt to state all required or proscribed behavior by users. However, some specific examples are provided. The failure of any user to follow the terms of the Authorization for Internet Access will result in the loss of privileges, disciplinary action, and/or appropriate legal action. The signature(s) at the end of this document is legally binding and indicates the party who signed has read the terms and conditions carefully and understands their significance.
Terms and Conditions
1. Acceptable Use - Access to the District's Internet must be for the purpose of education and research, and be consistent with the educational objectives of the District.
2. Privileges - The use of the District's Internet is a privilege, not a right, and inappropriate use will result in a cancellation of those privileges. The system administrator will make all decisions regarding whether or not a user has violated this Authorization and may deny, revoke, or suspend access at any time; his or her decision is final.
3. Unacceptable Use - You are responsible for your actions and activities involving the network. Some examples of unacceptable uses are:
a. Using the network for illegal activity, including violation of copyright or other contracts, or transmitting any material in violation of any U.S. or State regulation;
b. Unauthorized downloading of software, regardless of whether it is copyrighted or devirused;
c. Downloading copyrighted material for other than personal use;
d. Using the network for private financial or commercial gain;
e. Wastefully using resources, such as file space;
f. Gaining unauthorized access to resources or entitles;
g. Invading the privacy of individuals;
h. Using another user's account or password;
i. Posting material authored or created by another without his/her consent;
j. Posting anonymous messages;
k. Using the network for commercial or private advertising;
l. Accessing, submitting, posting, publishing, or displaying any defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive, harassing, or illegal material; and,
m. Using the network while access privileges are suspended or revoked.
4. Network Etiquette - You are expected to abide by the generally accepted rules of network etiquette. These include, but are not limited to, the following:
a. Be polite. Do not become abusive in your messages to others.
b. Use appropriate language. Do not swear, or use vulgarities or any other inappropriate language.
c. Do not reveal the personal addresses or telephone numbers of students or colleagues.
d. Recognize that electronic mail (E-mail) is not private. People who operate the system have access to all mail. Messages relating to or in support of illegal activities may be reported to the authorities.
e. Do not use the network in any way that would disrupt its use by other users.
f. Consider all communications and information accessible via the network to be private property.
5. No Warranties - The District makes no warranties of any kind, whether expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. The District will not be responsible for any damages you suffer. This includes loss of data resulting from delays, non-deliveries, missed-deliveries, or service interruptions caused by its negligence or your errors or omissions. Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at your own risk. The District specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through its services.
6. Indemnification - The user agrees to indemnify the School District for any losses, costs, or damages, including reasonable attorney fees, incurred by the District relating to, or arising out of, any of this Authorization.
7. Security - Network security is a high priority. If you can identify a security problem on the Internet, you must notify the system administrator or Building Principal. Do not demonstrate the problem to other users. Keep your account and password confidential. Do not use another individual's account without written permission from that individual. Attempts
to log-on to the Internet as a system administrator will result in cancellation of user privileges. Any user identified as a security risk may be denied access to network.
8. Vandalism - Vandalism will result in cancellation of privileges and other disciplinary action. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, the Internet, or any other network. This includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses.
9. Telephone Charges - The District assumes no responsibility for any unauthorized charges or fees, including telephone charges, long-distance charges, per-minute surcharges, and/or equipment or line costs.
