TEKS: 8.4a TLW collect, analyze, and record information to explain data using a variety of tools

Enduring Understandings: How are CSI investigation techniques like classroom lab investigations

Essential Question: what constitutes the evidence? How is it presented to convict or at least arrest the suspects.  TL’sW need to know each type of evidence as presented in the vocabulary for the class over the last 4 weeks.

Key Concept: process and integrity of evidence are crucial to CSI Success

Essential Vocabulary: fingerprints, loop, arch, whorl, blood analysis, agglutination, hair analysis,  Locard’s Principal, Hand Writing analysis, alibi, Crucial, types of evidence (see past 4 weeks vocabulary activities)

Brain Activator: short story “Who Done It?”

Instructional Activities**: The Case of Lois Mc Arthur Labs to include; Is it suicide or murder, how can it be proven?   This unit will introduce the last two components of or investigations, handwriting analysis and the Alibi

Blood; which must be collected, typed and identified to each of the 6 specific subjects, including the victim

Fingerprints; which must be organized, assessed for arches, loops, and whorls specific to each unsub, for this lab the teams must log and reference a minimum of 5 minutiae for admission as evidence, less is a reduced grade on this section.

Handwriting; which must be compared to known samples of handwriting from each of the 6 specific subjects

Hair; which must be first identified as human or animal, then matched to given samples from each of the 6 specific subjects, Additionally the teams will be looking for texture, color and scaling (damage)

Alibi confirmation for each unsub,

Each lab section will use one day for collection and correct analysis, then it will be recorded and added to the evidence files on this case per team of investigators.

The class is divided into teams of four for cross-reference purposes and to insure a maximum engagement of every student.  Each team of four will split up and go to determined stations for each lab section; each team member is responsible for one complete lab section in this overall case.

Assessments: formative assessments will be performed during team visits and discussion of the progress on each lab step rotating between teams and individuals on each section of the unit

Summative assessment will be found in Students’ indictment papers, to convict the proper suspect in the murder with supporting evidence from each component of the unit listed above in instructional activities.
