CANSI Ontario – XC Programs Director’s Report 2023-2024

This year was very challenging for XC Programs.

Successes and Challenges:

We were not able to run a full range of XC courses this season for Level I, II, or III instructors. We ran both an online and an on snow refresher for Instructors but were not able to complete a Course Conductor apprenticeships for Level I or II. The Weather this season has resulted in the need to reschedule and cancel many of our courses. It seemed every time we tried to run courses it rained!
A big thank you to Elizabeth and Jan, CANSI Ontario Board members, for their help/work with budgets and the spreadsheet needed to be sure we ran in the black this season. Also, we can’t forget Marie in the national office for all the help to make things run well with all the refunds required this year. A run down of all the successful events and the financials for this season is in the spreadsheet to follow.
Many candidates registered for courses this year and because of difficult snow conditions at our resorts we had to cancel most events and refund their registrations. The weather this season challenged us with the lack of snow and lots of rain which started in late December and kept up well into February. This led to many courses being rescheduled and eventually canceled. Greg Arminian and Yan Michaud were able to complete a Level I in the Ottawa area. Jonathan Reinke was able to complete a Level I in the Sault Ste. Marie area.

Good course registration hopefully will continue next year. Course Conductors were able to have helpful discussions during the online course and the refresher for instructors was well attended. Despite all the challenges we managed to run 4 courses out of the 20 planned. 8 different locations were proposed, 31 participants registered and completed events. We Certified 12 XC Level I new instructors and we recertified numerous instructors with refreshers both on snow and online.
Financially the season resulted in a profit of just over $1800 for XC courses.

I would like to thank all of the CANSI Ontario Board members for the support they gave to XC Programing during this challenging year and to all Course Conductors (Wendy Grater, Chris Clarke, Martha Rafuse, David Wallin, Paul Graner, Jonathan Reinke, Greg Arminen and Yan Michaud) who conducted great courses while overcoming many problems and generously donated time and effort to CANSI Ontario.

*Note that due to COVID some normally active instructors chose not to renew in 2020-2021, returning in 2021-2022.

There are a number of cross country instructors who are dues-paying members but have lapsed their instructor certification. They were encouraged to attend a virtual or on-snow refresher this season.

Currently, Ontario has 2 active Level I Course Conductors, 4 active Level II Course Conductor, 1 active Level III Course Conductor.
