From Makeshift to Match-Ready: How Lacuna Sports Elevated the Swiss Women's National Cricket Team
Polly Starkie interviews Dani Medagoda, Captain of the Swiss Women’s National Team, on her cricketing journey and how Lacuna Sports helped transform their national team kit experience.

Dani Medagoda led the Swiss Women’s National Cricket Team out against Belgium in a historic 4-match T20I series held in Zemst, just outside Brussels, earlier this season. But beyond the excitement of international competition, two standout milestones marked this moment for the Swiss squad: the live streaming of their games - and their debut in a brand-new, custom-designed Lacuna Sports kit.

For a team that, just four years ago, cobbled together uniforms from high street sports shirts and mismatched trousers, this was a significant leap forward.

From Accidental Cricketer to National Skipper

You might assume that Medagoda, raised in Australia with Sri Lankan heritage, grew up with cricket in her DNA. But her path to captaincy is anything but conventional.

“A friend invited me to a women’s open day he was running,” Dani recalls. “He knew I had a bit of a cricket background and just needed someone to help out. I stuck around - and never left.”

That open day was hosted at Cossonay Cricket Club near Lausanne - a venue Dani fondly calls “the best ground in Switzerland,” nestled among postcard-worthy mountain views. It was the start of a cricketing chapter that would lead to her captaining a national side on the international stage.

The Challenge of Kit in a Growing Cricket Nation

As the Swiss women’s game developed, one of the less glamorous - but crucial - hurdles was kit. Ill-fitting uniforms sourced from generic sizing charts or men’s templates had been a persistent issue.

“The measurements we submitted and what we got back were crazy,” Dani said, laughing. “It looked like we were wearing rectangles. If your hips were wider, the pants were longer - so you'd fold them up three or four times. Some trousers were just like circus tents!”

Despite well-meaning efforts by club members and volunteers, the challenge of finding performance-ready, female-specific kit remained unresolved - until Lacuna Sports stepped in.

A Game-Changing Partnership with Lacuna Sports

Recognising the needs of the team, Lacuna Sports flew in to conduct detailed, individual fittings with every player. The result? A completely bespoke high-performance kit tailored to each athlete - and designed specifically for women and girls playing the game.

“Lacuna took the time to meet with us all for fittings, which was brilliant,” Dani said. “Normally you just order a size and hope for the best. This was totally different.”

Players tried on multiple styles of tops, trousers, shorts, and added extras like leggings and hoodies - with real-time feedback shaping their final selections. For those unable to attend in person, Lacuna even arranged virtual fittings over Zoom, ensuring no one was left out.

“The team at Lacuna were so flexible and committed. It gave us a sense of ownership - while still looking like a unified, professional team. We finally felt like a proper national squad, ready to perform in kit that matched our ambition.”

Looking the Part, Playing the Part

As the team took to the field against Belgium, Dani knew that regardless of the match results, they had already won in one key area.

“Everyone will walk out feeling comfortable and confident,” she said. “We can trust the kit we’re in - so now, we just focus on the cricket.”
