Getting Your Permit:
To get your permit you may need at least one document (one for each) stating Date of Birth, Address, and Identity.
- Valid U.S. Passport or Passport Card
- U.S. Birth certificate issued by a state or local government
- Valid Foreign Passport
- Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship (N-550, N-0, N-561, N-570)
- Valid U.S. Employment Authorization Card with Valid Foreign Passport with U.S. Visa, I-94, or I-551 stamp. (The Visa, I-94, or I-551 can be expired.)
- Permanent Resident Card I-551

Show the originals of the documents you uploaded
Have your photo taken
Pay the permit fee(s)
Get a temporary permit (you will receive your permit within 2 weeks by mail)
FAQs
How much supervised driving practice must I get before I take my road test? If you are under age 18, before you take your road test you must:
have a minimum of 150 hours of supervised practice driving with
at least 15 hours at night (after sunset)
at least 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic
How long do I have to wait after I get my learner permit to take my road test?
If you are under age 18, you must wait at least 6 months from the date you received your learner permit to schedule your road test.
How long do I have to wait after I get my learner permit to drive where I want?
If you are under age 18, you must drive with a person 21 or older until you pass your road test.
Restrictions (where you can’t drive):
- on any street within a park in New York City
- on any bridge or tunnel under the jurisdiction of the Tri-borough Bridge and Tunnel Authority
- on the Cross County, Hutchinson River, Saw Mill River, or Taconic State parkways in Westchester County
- in a DMV road test area
