YOUTH BASKETBALL (5th – 8th Grade)

DATES:  June 13 - 14, Monday–Tuesday

FEE:   $375 (4 game guarantee)

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION*

The tournament will be a two day tournament and we will not make ANY special accommodations for teams who request scheduling considerations (regardless of work, travel, medical and any other reasons.)  Please understand that if you register you will commit to play games as earlier as 8:00

a.m. on the 1st day and as late as 10:00 p.m. on the final day. There is also the possibility that you will play multiple games on any given day. We are grateful to you for participating in this year’s event and hope you will join us next year and we have given you enough notice to plan accordingly. Thanks for your understanding.

ROSTER:  (12 Players maximum – No roster additions after first game has been played)

  1. Burden of Proof” for a youth player lies with the coach. Burden of proof will be done at registration.. If questioned, the coach must provide proof of grade or proof of grade eligibility. This may require a school letter or principal verification. If no proof is available, the player will be declared ineligible and all games in which the player participated in, will be declared forfeit.
  2. Player eligibility can only be questioned on the first day of active games.
  3. All team waivers must be signed by a legal guardian.

CODE OF CONDUCT POLICY:

  1. All participants, coaches, and spectators shall refrain from using profanity or verbal abuse towards other players, coaches, spectators, referees and the tournament staff.
  2. Team coaches will be responsible for the conduct of their players. Teams and spectators shall abide by the tournament rules and regulations.
  3. No food or beverages are allowed in ANY of the gymnasiums. Only water and sport drinks will be permitted.
  4. The Tournament Director and the tournament staff are not responsible for any personal items that are left behind, lost, or stolen.
  5. Profanity can be assessed as a technical foul and the “F” word is an automatic technical.
  6. Physical contact with officials, USG personnel, or other players will warrant an automatic ejection from the game and a possible ejection from USG participation.

FIGHTING:

  1. Fighting is an attempt to strike an opponent with the arms, hands, legs, feet or a combative action by one or more players, a coach or other team personnel. Any member or team personnel who participate in a fight shall be immediately suspended from the game for duration to be determined by the Tournament Director and associates. Length of suspension will be assessed on an individual basis

  1. Let it be known that spectators and visitors who also elect to involve themselves in a fight during a game, will be suspended from the facility for a length of time to be determined by the Tournament Director and associates.

  1. Should any team, player(s) or coach be disqualified from tournament play, there will be no refunds.

EQUIPMENT AND UNIFORMS:  Home Team to provide game balls for each game.  All teams must wear basketball jerseys during their games. Each jersey must have the same color and they must have numbers(NO DUPLICATES). One technical foul will be assessed to teams that don’t abide by rule. NO JEWELRY OR EARRINGS OF ANY KIND

HOW TO REGISTER: Register online. If you are mailing in your registration form, send it to Utah Summer Games Registration, 351 West University Blvd., Cedar City, UT 84720. Use Team Registration Form. Team registration is not complete until full payment is received by USG at which time the team's slot is confirmed for the tournament. Please note that online registration is strongly encouraged.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Final online registration is due by Monday, May 23, at 2 PM.

SCHEDULES: It is anticipated that game schedules will be posted to the web site by TBA. Teams are responsible for monitoring this site for notices of schedule changes occurring prior to the beginning of the tournament. Due to the large number of teams and resulting games, scheduling requests cannot be accommodated.

CHECK-IN:  All Youth 5th-8th Grade Basketball teams need to check in at the SUU Sorenson PE building, 560 W University Blvd. on Monday, June13 starting at 7:00 AM and  PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST GAME. Each athlete will receive a welcome packet containing the official Utah Summer Games Athlete shirt and other assorted goodies. All teams must have waivers signed by all team members if over 18 or by parent or guardian if under 18.  NO EXCEPTIONS

DIVISIONS:  Age is determined by GRADE as of 2022-2023 school year (Youth may play up, but must be listed on any and all rosters that they may play in.) A representative will be reaching out to verify information.

RULES:

The Utah Summer Games Basketball Tournament will be conducted in accordance with established NFHS basketball rules with the following exceptions:

  1. Game Play: Team must have at least 3 players to start play without forfeit penalty (see Rule #4)

  1. Game Clock:
  1. Games will consist of two 20-minute halves.
  2. The clock will NOT stop on any fouls or violations. It will stop on timeouts.
  3.  EXCEPTION: The final 2 minutes of each half, the clock WILL stop on fouls/violations.
  4. MERCY RULE: Clock will not stop the final 2 minutes of each half if the point spread is 15 points or more.
  5. Teams will be allowed at least 3 minutes to warm up.
  6. Games will be played with 3 minute half times.
  1. Overtime: All overtimes will consist of 1 three minute period with standard high school rules. If second overtime is required it will be a free throw shoot off. The Shoot off will consist of 5 free throws which must be shot by 5 DIFFERENT players. (any player on roster is eligible unless they have been disqualified by fouling out or technical fouls) This will be repeated until a winning team is determined. This doesn’t apply to medal games, medal games will continue playing 3 minute overtime periods until a victor is decided.
  1. Overtime: 1 full timeout- no carry over time outs from regulation.
  2. Procedure of Shoot off- Shots will be best of 5 for each round.  Each referee will take the 5 selected players to their designated basket.  Home team will shoot first. Shots will alternate one at a time per end: Team A shoots first shot, Team B shoots first shot.  Team A shoots 2nd shot, Team B shoots 2nd shot etc…..all the way through to shot 5.  This can be repeated until one team wins.  Each round a new selection of players is allowed to shoot.

  1. Grace Period: A ten-minute grace period will be allowed for tardiness. Must have at least 3 players to start the game.  Otherwise, it will be counted as a forfeit and the clock will run.  The teams can still play

  1. Technical Fouls:  If a technical foul is assessed, the opposing team is given an automatic two points and the ball, and the game will continue. All technical fouls will count as a personal foul. A player who receives a technical foul must sit out of the game for five minutes before he/she will be allowed back into the game. If a player receives a second technical foul during the same game, the player will be ejected from the tournament and have to meet with the Summer Games Directors and Basketball Coordinators.

        *USG has the right to remove player, coach and/or spectator for unsportsmanlike behavior.

**“F” Word- automatic technical foul

  1. Pressing: Full court pressing is allowed, however, there will be no pressing if a team is 15 points ahead. (First time will be a warning, second time Technical foul will be assessed to the Head Coach)

  1. TIME OUTS – 2 Timeouts per half…. Don’t carry over.

  1.  Fouls and Free Throw attempts-

  1. a. All free throw attempts, including 1&1 and technicals, will be a 1-for-2 try, or 1-for-3 if shot was a 3 point attempt. (Does not apply in final 2 minutes)
  2. b. If a player is fouled in an attempted shot and is successful in scoring, the basket will count as an and-1, no free throw try will take place.  (Does not apply in final 2 minutes)

TOURNAMENT FORMAT:

Teams will all play a minimum of four games. Teams will be seeded during pool play.

SCHEDULING & SEEDING

  1. It is the responsibility of the coach to look for updates of games and brackets on the USG website

  1. Tie Breaker- Point differential in pool play for all games, with a maximum of 25 points in one game (see attachment)

  1. Medals will be awarded after competition of medal rounds.

4 After point differential if there are still three teams tied we will use total points allowed to determine the winner.
