Ready, Set, Go Kindergarten *waitlisted*

This class prepares students for the academic areas and inquiry-based approach they will encounter in LJA Kindergarten in the fall. Through art, cooking, small group rotations and hands-on experience, students will explore and learn authors who have captured the imaginations of young children around the globe and here at home in Hawaii. They will also participate in differentiated and experiential learning engagements both in and out of the classroom, focusing on phonics, developmentally appropriate reading and writing readiness activities, and math concepts like patterns and number sense. Through field trips, play, and exploration, students will build the social skills and confidence needed to excel in Kindergarten while having fun on the "new" campus. Note: LJA’s current and entering students have priority. Non-LJA students will need to complete a reference and/or observation/interview. The Summer School office will contact you to set up an appointment if spots are available.

Afternoon Kindergarten Fun
This class is open only to students registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten. Continue your child’s fun into the afternoon! Lunch and recess is from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m, followed by fun and skill development through arts and crafts, music and movement, cooking, indoor and outdoor play, as well as weekly visits from storytellers and scientists. Live guest performances will entertain and excite students through songs, stories, and vibrant music. Come learn and laugh in Kindergarten Fun!

Extended Day Kindergarten

Extended Day is open to those registered in Ready, Set, Go to Kindergarten and Afternoon Kindergarten Fun, offering child care from 3:00 p.m.-5:45 p.m. and providing a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Students will enjoy snack time, recreational swimming or water fun activities, computer games, movies, arts and crafts, outdoor play, organized games, and supervised homework if needed. Snacks are to be provided by the family. To ensure student safety, parents/authorized persons may be asked to present photo ID at pick up.

Swim Instruction  

Students enjoy small to private groups (1–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 p.m. by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. You may be contacted via email for your child's swim level. Lesson times will be included in your final confirmation.

Does music make you move? This introductory class explores movement and focuses on creative movement to build body awareness, self-control, listening skills, strength, and balance coordination. Moves are broken down into simple steps to provide a clear structure and make learning fun. Dance to songs from Kidz Bop and age-appropriate Disney songs. Daily musical group games will be played for fun-filled energy and the confidence to get up and dance every time a beat drops. The dancers' talents will be showcased at the end of the summer.

Love art? Love reading? Art from the Heart is for you! This course gives students the opportunity to discover and explore the unique art residing within themselves using illustrations from award-winning Caldecott medal books as models of expression. These picture books will help students to see art from a perspective that may be new to them. They may begin to notice how lines and colors affect the mood of artwork and how shapes can be used to create a picture. Students will create individual art portfolios to showcase their use of various art mediums, demonstrating their understanding of art elements - line, shape, color, texture, value, and space. In this course, confidence is given an opportunity to grow with a splash of color and a stroke of a paintbrush!

What do you do when you live on a tiny island, surrounded by water? Well, first you learn to swim, and then you dive in! In this class art is used as a way to explore the coral reefs that encircle our island, and the fascinating creatures who call the reef home. We’ll use materials including papier-mâché, watercolor, clay, modeling paste...and socks, to depict boxfish, jellyfish and starfish. We’ll make urchins and socktopus, and our own fish book. We may even make a shell or two. By the time we’re done you’ll have a new appreciation for what lies beneath, and some cool art as well! So dig out that diving bell and get ready to get wet!

This class gets even the youngest of students coding by using both online and “unplugged” activities to teach computer programming basics in a creative and collaborative environment. In a fun and exploratory way, students will learn the basics of computer programming while developing their critical thinking, logic, persistence, and creativity skills to help them excel at problem-solving. Hūi! Aloha mai kākou! Join us for a summer of hula, Hawaiian language, and authentic Hawaiian arts in a fun learning environment. Students can expect a summer full of Hawaiian culture, chant, and dance focusing on hula basics and learning the mo'olelo (story) behind the mele (song). Students will learn hula 'auana (contemporary hula), hula kahiko (traditional hula), and costume and lei making to put on a culminating ho'ike (show) displaying what they have learned for their family, friends, and the LJA community to display what they have learned.

“A-one, two, three, four!” In this class, kids get to be in a band and learn how to read music!  We will aim to grasp the basics of rhythm & music sight reading to learn parts, and rock on! After rehearsing with your band, rock out on performance day to popular pop, rock, and punk-style songs for the ultimate kid rock band experience.

Be a part of the adventure with a variety of energizing, engaging sports activities and games. Students will enjoy cooperative team-building exercises and sports-related games such as Strikeout Bowling, Hole in One Blitz, Biscuit in the Basket (hockey), Keep it Up Volleyball and Bounce into Basketball. Additional activities during rotations  include creative movement, fitness activities, yoga, pool games, and water safety skills. On campus excursions to  wrap up the summer adventures include: Get Down Boogie, Knockerball, Bouncy Sports Challenge, and Kid’s Rock Celebration. Our Earth Friendly Art class highlights our living planet which is the theme throughout this class, as well as a source of inspiration and material for young artists. Our focus will be how our choices impact the earth, our art, and ourselves. We will use materials and practices that minimize the harm we create in our environment. Our media will include reusable and recyclable materials for our creations, and learning how to see artistic value and function in common items overlooked in our daily lives. Finally, we will focus on being supportive of everyone's artistic expression. Students enjoy small to private groups (1–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 p.m. by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. Art on the Reef

What do you do when you live on a tiny island, surrounded by water? Well, first you learn to swim, and then you dive in! In this class art is used as a way to explore the coral reefs that encircle our island, and the fascinating creatures who call the reef home. We’ll use materials including papier-mâché, watercolor, clay, modeling paste...and socks, to depict boxfish, jellyfish and starfish. We’ll make urchins and socktopus, and our own fish book. We may even make a shell or two. By the time we’re done you’ll have a new appreciation for what lies beneath, and some cool art as well! So dig out that diving bell and get ready to get wet!

This is not your granny’s knitting class, but an introduction to the creative, calming, social craft of knitting. While making anything from a ski cap to a stuffed animal, you will develop fine-motor skills, improve focus, learn math and have fun. Students enjoy small to private groups (1–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 p.m. by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. Expedition Atlantis: Using Math and Robotics to Uncover an Age Old Mystery

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to discover the lost city of Atlantis. Teams will compete to unlock the secrets of the ancient civilization and will demonstrate their theory about Atlantis with a scale model of the city. Use robots and proportional reasoning to explore for the lost underwater city, decode ciphers, learn about what historians really think about the legendary place, and have fun.

Polynesian Music Ensemble

Calling all ukulele players and singers! Whether you are new or have experience, the Polynesian Music Ensemble is an excellent opportunity to learn popular music in a group setting. Students choose between singing, playing ukulele, or, both for the ensemble! Fine-tune your voice with modern choral techniques and strum the ukulele in tandem! This unique ukulele-vocal fusion will focus on creating balance and harmonies. Singers will develop a strong individual sense of rhythm, pitch, dynamics, resonance, and harmony in a group setting.

After School Programs

Extended Day 

The Extended Day program offers child care from 3:00 p.m.-5:45 p.m. providing students with a relaxed, safe and fun-filled late afternoon under careful and nurturing supervision. Students will enjoy snack time, recreational swimming or water fun activities, computer games, movies, arts and crafts, outdoor play, organized games, and supervised homework if needed. Snacks are to be provided by the family. Students are placed in grade level classes. To ensure student safety, parents/authorized persons may be asked to present photo ID at pick up. Note: Students must be enrolled in a 1:00 p.m. course to enroll in Extended Day.

Swim Instruction

Students enjoy small to private groups (1–4 students per instructor) swimming lessons in our 25-meter saltwater pool. Classes are offered at 30-minute intervals between 3:05 and 5:05 p.m. by highly experienced and caring instructors. The curriculum for beginners includes water adjustment along with body position, breath control, strokes and kicking actions for the front and back crawl strokes. Intermediate swimmers will refine their front and back crawl strokes while being introduced to breaststroke and butterfly. Stroke development will continue for intermediate and advanced students in the areas of starts, turns, treading, diving, safety and swimming efficiently for speed and endurance. You may be contacted via email for your child's swim level. Lesson times will be included in your final confirmation.
