High School Credit(s) 1
Course Description
This course is designed to provide a technical level of understanding in the areas of networking
connectivity, data communications concepts, security, and communication protocols.
Communications and network configurations are included. System design considerations are
addressed. Emphasis is on local area networks, and students will install a simple local area
network. This course will help prepare students to take standard industry certification exams.
Objectives
The objectives set the groundwork for what you will learn during the next thirty-six weeks.

Course Outline
Upon Competition of this course, the student can:
1. Demonstrate understanding of basic network structure and topologies
2. Describe the characteristics of networking media types and connectors.
3. Identify the basic attributes, purposes, and functions of network components including
wireless technologies.
4. Define the layers of the OSI model and identify the protocols, services, and functions that
pertain to each layer.
5. Differentiate between network protocols in terms of routing, addressing schemes,
interoperability and naming conventions.
6. Identify the components and structure of IP (Internet Protocol) addresses (IPv4, IPv6)
and the required settings for connections across the Internet including classful address
ranges, public/private addressing, and subnet masks.
7. Define the purpose, function and use of the protocols that comprise the TCP / IP protocol
suite.
8. Identify the well-known ports associated with commonly used services and protocols.
Intro to Networking
9. Identify the basic characteristics of WAN and remote access technologies.
10. Identify common security and authentication protocols.
11. Identify basic capabilities of the major network server operating systems.
12. Define the basic purposes and capabilities of firewalls, proxy servers, VLANs, extranets,
and intranets.
13. Define fault tolerance including RAID levels, disaster recovery and various back-up
types and backup media.
14. Identify good practices to ensure network security including antivirus software,
authentication mechanisms, etc.
15. Plan and install a simple local area network.
16. Use the appropriate TCP/IP utilities to test, validate, and troubleshoot IP connectivity.
17. Use a systematic approach to diagnose a network problem using the appropriate tools,
develop a recommended course of action to resolve the problem, and document the
solution.
