Writing with Literature (9th through 12th grade)


THIS CLASS HAS MANDATORY SUMMER READING. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THIS BEFORE YOU ENROLL YOUR STUDENT.

YOU MUST SUBMIT A WRITING SAMPLE AND HAVE A RECOMMENDATION FROM THE INSTRUCTOR TO ENROLL IN THIS CLASS.

Course Description:  In this course, students will read and write about classic literature from a variety of authors.  First semester will focus on classic early literary works, focusing on the theme of the hero. Second semester, students will move into classical argument writing based on more contemporary works of literature.  Paragraphs, essays, and research papers will be assigned from the readings. Students will be expected to read the assigned texts, write papers, research, and document information from credible secondary sources.  Outside reading, writing, research, and sharing of papers may be required each week. Upon completion of this class, students will have a clear knowledge of how to write a literary analysis essay, a classic argument essay, research secondary sources, annotate literary sources, and an understanding of some great classics. As students are exposed to different time periods, themes, and cultures through the literature, discussion of ideas will be presented from a Biblical worldview.

Students must have access at home to a computer/laptop/iPad and the internet for this class. Students are required to bring a laptop/iPad to class. Grades and assignments will be shared through Google Classroom. Executive function and technology usage in the classroom will be emphasized throughout the year. STUDENTS WILL NEED ACCESS TO A FUNCTIONING PRINTER AT HOME.

Students will be encouraged to do their best and develop the skills and talent that God has given them in the area of academic writing.

Prerequisite: Students must have a basic knowledge of essay writing to enroll in this class. Students must possess basic MLA research skills.

Instructor: Mrs. Beth Moore. Mrs. Moore holds a B.A. in English from Samford University with a minor in history. She has an M.A. in English from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). She has seven years of teaching experience at Pelham High School where she taught General English, Advanced English, and AP Prep English classes. After leaving there, she taught Composition 101 - level courses at UAB and Composition 101- and 102- level courses at Jefferson State Community College (Shelby Campus) until the arrival of her first child. She has taught at Chelsea Tutorials for the past twelve years. She is married and has four boys. She is a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church. Mrs. Moore addresses subject matter from a biblical worldview.

Tuition and Fees:

Administrative Fee: $50 per student enrolled in the program, due at the time of registration, refundable through 6/30/23, payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA.

Registration Fee: $25 per student, due at the time of registration, nonrefundable, payable to Beth Moore. Venmo to Beth-Moore-84.

Tuition: $195 per semester, due on the first day of class, payable to Beth Moore. Venmo to Beth-Moore-84.

Facility Fee: The annual facility fee for this class is $30 per student, not to exceed $180 per family. This fee is payable to Grace Presbyterian Church, PCA, on the first day of class.  

Class Minimum: If a class minimum of 5 students is not reached, class may be canceled. A maximum of 12 students will be accepted.
