Rules and Information

 

The Somernites Cruise Pageants are scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2019 at the Center for Rural Development Theater in Somerset, KY from 6 pm to 10 pm EDT. Males: ages 0 to 3 years; and females;  ages 0 to 19 years (if still in high school), who are legal resident of either Pulaski, Casey, Laurel, Lincoln, McCreary, Rockcastle, Russell or Wayne County in Kentucky are eligible for the competitions The purpose of these pageants is to find wholesome children and young women to represent the values and goals of the Somerset Junior Woman’s Club and the Somernites Cruise Management Team, along with each group’s commitment to the community. These are not pageants focusing on glamor…but rather on natural beauty, personality, confidence and attributes associated with good character.  This is a family-oriented program geared to raising funds for local charitable projects, showcasing local youth and celebrating the lake Cumberland area’s most exciting tourism event.  

 

Age Categories, Basic Costume Requirements & Participant Limits

 

Girls: (Please see complete rules regarding attire as these basic costume requirements.)

Age 0-11 months – casual red, white and blue outfit <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 12 -23 months – casual red, white and blue outfit <10 CONTESTANT>

Age 2 to 3 years – red, white and/or blue shirt with blue jeans <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 4 to 6 - red, white and/or blue shirt with blue jeans <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 7 to 10 years – non-formal dresses <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 11-14 years – floor length formal gown <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 15-19 years – trendy casual outfit and floor length formal gown <10 CONTESTANTS>

 

Boys: (Please see complete rules regarding attire as these basic costume requirements.)

Age 0-11 months – casual red, white and blue outfit <10 CONTESTANTS>

Age 12 -23 months – casual red, white and blue outfit <10 CONTESTANT>

Age 2 to 3 years – red, white and/or blue shirt with blue jeans <10 CONTESTANTS>

 

 

In all categories, the age of each contestant will be determined by the age she or he will be on July 1, 2019.

RULES

1)     All registration material must be completed by and received by the Somerset Junior Woman’s Club by Friday, June 14, 2019.  All forms and paperwork must be mailed to SJWC, PO Box 904, Somerset, KY 42502. Registration and entry fees received after June 14th, or once an age category is filled, will be returned to the sender. (If a category is filled before the final deadline, that information will be announced on the SJWC Facebook page.)

2)    Entry fees for all contestants, ages 0-19 years are $25.00 per person. The entry fee must be returned with the registration material. Only checks or money orders will be accepted and should be made payable to SJWC. Please do not send cash. There will be no multi-family discounts and fees are not refundable.

3)    Each contestant should be entered in the age category she or he will be on July 1, 2019 NO exceptions permitted.

4)    Each contestant must be a legal resident of Pulaski, Casey, Laurel, Lincoln, Rockcastle, Russell or Wayne County in Kentucky. Parents or guardians of contestant may be required to show proof of residency.

5)    In the event a parent in one of the accepted counties has joint custody or regular visitation with a child living outside of one o the accepted counties, SJWC will determine the eligibility of that child and may or may not allow that child to enter the contest. If there are the circumstances involving your child, please attach a not with detail to the application.

6)    Children and grandchildren of members of the Somerset Junior Woman’s Club and Somernites Cruise Management Team are strictly forbidden from entering any competitions in any age category.

7)    There will be no discrimination due to race, creed, color, religion, ethnic or disability. Diversity is welcomed and encouraged.

8)    Contestants must be single, never married, without children and having never been pregnant.

9)    Contestants must be of good moral character never having been convicted of any crime nor have any criminal charges pending.

10) Contestants should have never done any act or engaged in any activity which could be characterized as dishonest, immoral, immodest or indecent.

11) One chaperone (only 1) must accompany each contestant backstage and on-stage for ages 0 months to 6 years (Wee, Tiny Tot, Tiny and Little Miss categories.)  The chaperone for ages 0 months to 3 years (Wee, Tiny Tot and Tiny Mister) will be required to carry or lead the contestant by hand to the judging area of the stage and remain with that child until the competition is completed. The chaperone for ages 4 to 6 (Little Miss) will be required to walk the child to the stage and remain backstage to help the child off stage following the competition. The Little Miss contestant will walk alone on the stage to the judging area.

12) Chaperones for the contestants in the age category of 7 to 10-year-old girls (Young Miss) will be required to bring the contestants to the backstage entrance.

13) No chaperone is required but one and only one parent/guardian or guest is permitted backstage with contestants in the 11 to 14-year-old (Princess) and 15 to 19-year-old (Miss Somernites Cruise) categories.

14) Contestants in the Wee, Tiny Tot, Tiny, Little and Young Miss competitors must be completely dressed upon arrival. Contestants in the Princess competition will be allowed to get dressed backstage but should have hair and applicable make-up completed (other than general touch-ups) before going backstage. Contestants in the Miss Somernites Cruise competition will be permitted to get dressed, do hair and apply make-up backstage before the Casual and Formal portions of their pageant.

15) Contestants and all accompanying members or guests will conduct themselves in a proper lady or gentleman-like manner at all times. Any display of uncooperative or unsportsmanlike-like conduct will result in disqualification of the contestant. This will be carefully monitored my members of Somerset Junior Woman’s Club and the Somernites Cruise Management Team.

16)  Contestants and their guests and chaperones are encouraged to keep a positive attitude and be supportive of all those participating in the event.

17) The Somerset Junior Woman’s Club, Somernites Cruise Management Team, Center for Rural Development, participating vendors, consulting media and volunteers will not be held responsible for accidents injuries, theft or loss that may occur though negligence of contestant, parent, or guardian, or other participant in the event before, during or after the event; or in transit to or from this event and any future event with obligations of winners.

18) Each contestant and one parent or guardian of contestant who is 0 months to 14 years will be admitted to the event free, (The 15 to 19-year-old contestants are not required to have a parent or guardian in attendance. (Admission for all remaining family and friends will be $5 each.

19) PLEASE READ THIS RULE CAREFULLY: The Young Miss, Princess, and Miss Somernites Cruise winners are required to attend the Somernites 4th Saturday Cruise event on July 27, 2019 (a photo shoot of all three will be conducted, (check in at the DJ Booth at 3pm), September 28, 2019 and April 25th 2020. Miss Somernites Cruise will be required to choose at least 2 more 4th Saturday Cruise Dates in the 2019 season or before July of 2020. These ladies are strongly encouraged to attend each and every Somernites Cruise Events as set up by the Somernites Cruise Management teams. This can include Friday events, Block Parties or special events as requested by Somernites Cruise Management Team. The winners in these three categories are asked to attend official Somerset Junior Woman’s Club community events whenever possible.  Winners may be asked to represent SJWC and the Cruise at community events such as the Christmas Parade and community fundraisers whenever possible.  IF FOR ANY REASON, OTHER THAN EMERGENCIES, A CONTESTANT IN THE “YOUNG MISS”, “PRINCESS” AND “MISS SOMERNITES CRUISE PAGEANTS CAN NOT MEET THE OBLIGATIONS SHE SHOULD NOT ENTER THE CONTEST.

20) The winners in all other categories will be asked to make appearances whenever possible at all official Somernites Cruise and Somerset Junior Woman’s Club Events. There are no attendance requirements for Wee Miss and Mister, Tiny Tot Miss and Mister, Tiny Miss and Mister, and Little Miss, but the winner are always welcomed and encouraged to attend and enjoy events at the parent’s or guardian’s discretion. ALL category WINNERS are asked to be at a group Photo Shoot on July 27, 2019 at 4pm. Please check in at the DJ Booth in downtown Somerset near the Fountain Square where you will be introduced to the crowd.

21) The WINNER in each age category will be required to attend the 2020 SJWC-Somernites Cruise Pageant program to help present the new winner in that category with appropriate gifts and officially hand over the age category title.

22) If for any reason, a Winner in any age category can not fulfill her (or his) obligations, the First Runner-Up in that category will be required to take the winner’s place and handle the winner’s responsibilities.

23) All contestants will have the chance to participate in a Community Service Project on the day of the pageants.

24) All contestants in the Wee, Tiny Tot, Tot Miss and Mister, Little Miss and Young Miss competitions should submit a 4x6 snapshot (not professional and unfiltered), with application and registration material. Keep in mind that these photos may be printed in the newspaper and should be appropriate for printing. These may not be professional photos and should show the child in a natural setting instead of a studio or professional backdrop.  No photos will be returned and become the property of SJWC.

25) All contestants in the Princess, and Miss Somernites Cruise pageants should submit a 5x7 color photo with application and registration material. These may be professional photos but may not be “glamour” shots.  No photos will be returned and become the property of SJWC.

26) The Judging Panel in each category will consist of three judges from outside the competition area.  All judges’ decisions are final.

27) All contestants over the age of 18 will be required to sign an individual Publicity Release. A parent or guardian of any contestant under the age of 18 years of age will be required to sign a Publicity Release for the contestant.

28) Each age category has or may have specific requirements for attire, make-up, hair, orientation, on-stage questions or speaking, written essays, etc. Please see the attached info in individual category requirements.

29) Prizes for each category will be as follows: The Winner, First Runner-Up. Ad Second Runner-Up in the Wee, Tiny Tot, Tiny Miss and Mister and Little Miss categories will receive trophies. The Winner in the Young Miss, Princess, and Miss Somernites Cruise will receive tiaras, sashes, a plaque or trophy, and flowers. The First and Second Runner-Up in the Young Miss, Princess and Miss Somernites Cruise will receive a trophy or plaque and sashes. Miss Somernites Cruise will receive a $500 cash Sheila Goodwin Memorial Scholarship from Somerset Junior Woman’s Club and a $500 cash scholarship from the Somernites Cruise Management Team (Scholarships will be presented once she has fulfilled her duties at Somernites Cruise Events.)  All contestants will receive a token of participation. Other prizes may be announced.

0-11 months:                        Wee Miss & Mister Somernites Cruise

Wee Miss & Mister will be judged as happy, personable babies. Boys and girls will wear casual red, white and or blue.  No sequins, hair pieces, wigs or make-up will be permitted.

(Competition is limited to the first 10 girls and the first 10 boys.)

 

12-23 months:                      Tiny Tot Miss and Mister Somernites Cruise

Tiny Tot Miss and Mister will be judged on presence and personality.  Both boys and girls should wear red, white and blue outfits.  No sequins, hair pieces, wigs, spray tans or make-up will be permitted.   (Competition is limited to the first 10 girls and the first 10 boys.)

2 & 3 year:                 Tiny Miss and Mister Somernites

Tiny Miss and Mister will be judged on overall personality and stage presence. Girls and boys should wear a red, white and/or blue shirt and denim blue jeans (No distressed, torn or ripped jeans.) No sequins, hair pieces, wigs, spray tans or make-up will be permitted.

4-6 years:                                         Little Miss Somernites

Little Miss will be judged on overall personality and stage presence. Girls and boys should wear a red, white and/or blue shirt and denim blue jeans (No distressed, torn or ripped jeans.) No sequins, hair pieces, wigs, spray tans or make-up will be permitted.

(Competition is limited to the first 10 girls.)

 

7-10 years:                 Young Miss Somernites Cruise

Young Miss will be judged on personality, stage presence and confidence. She will be required to say her name during on-stage introductions. She should wear a non-formal dress such as would be worn to a nice event or wedding. No mini’s permitted. No sequins, hair pieces, wigs, spray tans or make-up other than clear lip gloss and light blush permitted.

(Competition is limited to the first 10 girls.)

 

 

 

11-14 years:               Somernites Cruise Princess

Princess will be judged on personality, confidence, stage presence, and composure when asked on stage…” If your Fairy Godmother granted you one wish, what would it be and why?” She will also be judged on a submitted 250-word essay on her female role model and why that female was chosen.  (The essay will count for 25% of her final score from the judges.) She should wear a long formal. It can not be strapless, cannot have cut-outs, cannot have excessive transparent material. She may wear light mascara, lip gloss and light cheek make-up in neutral colors. No foundation make-up, no hair pieces, not wigs, no falsies of any kind or no spray tans will be permitted…She should still look like a child not young adult. Dress should meet approval of SJWC at orientation prior to the contest.

15-19 years:                Miss Somernites Cruise

Miss Somernites Cruise will be judged on personality, poise, stage presence, confidence and composure when answering two separate on-stage questions. During the Casual portion of the competition she will be asked “If you were a car what kind would you be and why?” During the Formal portion of the competition, she will be asked to answer a question she will draw from a box. These questions will focus on topics of interest to SJWC and Somernites Cruise.  She will also be judged on a submitted 500-word essay on an empowered Kentucky woman, the impact that woman has made on the state and her one attribute that best describes the contestant.  (The essay will count for 25 % of the judges’ score.)  During the Casual portion, she should wear some type of trendy casual outfit…not to include mini’s, tube tops, bare midriffs or anything too revealing. For the Formal portion of the program, she should wear a floor length formal that does not have cut-outs or excessive transparent material.  She is permitted to wear make-up, but should still strive for a wholesome, well-rounded look.  Hair pieces. wigs or falsies of any type are not permitted.  Both the Casual and Formal outfits must meet SJWC approval at orientation prior to contest.

***No red lipstick, heavy base, stage make-up or heavy black eyeliner will be permitted on stage on any contestant.

Pageant Rehearsal & Orientation Schedule

 

(Rehearsals and Orientation will not be necessary for the children in the Wee, Tiny Tot Tiny Miss Mister, Little Miss and Young Miss contests.)

 

 

Orientation for Princess will be Tuesday, June 25th at 6:00pm in Meeting Room A of the Pulaski County Public Library. (Candidates will be required to bring the attire they will be wearing in the pageant.)

 

Orientation for the Miss Somernites for Miss Somernites Cruise will be Tuesday, June 25th at 7:00pm in Meeting Room A of the Pulaski County Public Library. (Candidates will be required to bring the attire they will be wearing in the pageant.)

 

 

There will be no official rehearsal for this pageant. The stage will not be open for contestants in any category for practice.

Contestants in all age categories of competition on the 2019 Somerset Junior Woman’s Club-Somernites Cruise Pageants are invited to do something special for the community! On pageant night, contestants and guests are asked to bring books for The Lake Cumberland Children’s Advocacy Center or a donation for Relay. Buckets for Relay for Life will be available on site.
