31-38 is Karma Kanda (that is the first application of atma jana)

And in next verse Krishna will talk about Kirti so remember Krishna has not taken things to spiritual level so he will now talk a lot about Kirti, Krishna is not talking here at the level of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Amani Na Man Dena he is talking about Kshetriya in their language if you lose your fame also, so how he will lose his fame is talked about in next verse.

TRANSLATION

People will always speak of your infamy, and for a respectable person, dishonor is worse than death.

So akirtim capi bhutani, the word comes in previous verse Kirti is fame akirti is infamy.

akirtim capi bhutani

kathayishyanti te 'vyayam

So people will speak for 'vyaya for a long-long time to come, actually in this world infamy stays on for a long time because many people like to gossip, you know what that person did…people speak about that and it goes on and on. Now by no means Krishna is condoning or recommending this, Krishna is just informing a universal pattern of human behavior this is how it is. In some cheap media also we can see such things are published too much people like this because of low nature, now it has even increased because of internet but these are general tendencies. So Krishna is telling Arjuna if you act in this way which is not approved people will just talk about this.

So as a devotees we are not concerned about reputation for our own sake but we are concerned about reputation for sharing Krishna’s message. If a preacher gets bad reputation or a preacher’s character is flawed or even not flawed but somehow preacher gets a bad reputation then the preachers capacity to share message gets impeded so when people trust the person such kinds of spiritual messages are shared but if there is a gossip and when we see the person we will think whether this person has done like that? So this erode our faith away so from our point of view we should always try to avoid hearing gossip but it is universal human nature that people will gossip of course it is not recommended nature it is lower nature.

So from preacher point of view it is also important that we should not act in a way which will bring infamy

sambhavitasya cakirtir

maranad atiricyate

So Krishna is saying for a person who is honored, dishonor is worse than death.

So sticks can break the bones but harsh words can break heart that effect of which is much deeper such wounds are much deeper than physical wounds, most of time suicide is committed because of emotional pain and not because of physical pains.

So one thing is harsh word is spoken to a person and other things is it is going around in world so such dishonor become so it is difficult to deal with, so Krishna is saying Arjuna this can happen with you.
