Dracula Annotated Bibliography Assignment          Due: Friday, December 14, 2018

  1. You are to prepare an abbreviated annotated bibliography for Dracula.  The reason I call it abbreviated is that I am only requiring you to locate two (2) articles that discuss Dracula.  Do not choose an article about Bram Stoker’s life or his writing in general.  I want you to read articles that discuss aspects of Dracula—most will involve meaning.
  2. You must use our library here at Walnut. We will be visiting the library on Friday, Dec. 7 and Monday, Dec. 10. Mrs. Wathen will have some sources ready to help you.    These sources will likely be on a cart at the circulation desk—for you to use while in the library.  Do not ask to take them home.  If you are pushed for time, please make a copy of the article you would like to read. You can also use your phone to take a picture of the article and bibliographic information.
  3. They only articles from the Internet that you may use are those from the databases the librarian shows you.  YOU MAY NOT JUST “GOOGLE” ARTICLES.  They must come from approved databases from our library.
  4. So what is an annotated bibliography?  An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books articles, and documents.  Each citation is followed by brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph—called the annotation.  The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. Annotations should consist of the following:  describe the content (focus), describe the usefulness, discuss any limitations, describe what audience is intended, evaluate the methods of research, evaluate reliability, discuss conclusions drawn, describe your reaction.
  5. The article should be cited in MLA style using hang indention.  Part of your grade will depend on the accuracy of entering the information in this format. There are samples on schoology or you can copy template here -- https://docs.google.com/document/d/15mjh1skgjyrWyvATDAr3E02AStLa3zOwBeig8npQqfI/edit .
  6. After the bibliographic entry you should include the annotation.  See the example below.
  7. The Annotated Bibliography must be typed and not much longer than one page.  Do not use a font larger than 12 or smaller than 9.  Use one-inch margins. The document I have assigned to you on schoology is already correctly formatted.

Waite, Linda J., Frances Kobrin Golscheider, and Christina Witsberger.  “Nonfamily Living and the

Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations Among Young Adults.”  American Sociological

                Review 51 (1986): 541-554.

The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and brown University, use data from the

National Longitudinal surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that

nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans and expectations, moving

them away from their belief in traditional sex roles.  They find their hypothesis strongly

supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males.  Increasing

the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and

changes in attitudes about families.  In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited shows no

significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
