Dear ULC Students and Families,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year at Upper Little Caillou Elementary School.  Our administrative team, faculty, and staff are excited to have you with us, and we are eager to provide opportunities for all students to grow and excel.  Our goal is to assist our students with developing academically, socially, and emotionally.  Together, we can help each child reach his/her full potential.  

This handbook can be used as a guide to keep students and parents informed about general school procedures and expectations. It contains information about the academic curriculum and school activities.  Please note that not all aspects of the school’s or the parish’s procedures are included in this book.  Reference is made to the parish Code of Conduct book regarding important policies and state laws.

This information is a supplement to the Code of Student Conduct.

CURRICULUM

The curriculum at Upper Little Caillou School provides the master plan for each grade level.  The courses offered are those required by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE). Course content follows the objectives set in the state and parish grade level expectations and standards.

  1. GRADING PROCEDURES:

Grading procedures at ULC are in accordance with policies and procedures established by the Terrebonne Parish School Board.

       A: 100-93                        Satisfactory (S): 100 - 75

       B:  92-85                         Needs Improvement (N): 74 - 67

       C:  84-75                         Unsatisfactory (U): 66 & below

       D:  74-67

       F:  66 & below

  1. HOMEWORK:

             Homework is an important factor in reinforcing skills taught in daily lessons.  Students at ULC will be held strictly accountable for completing and returning all assignments.

  1. TEST FOLDERS

A test folder provided by the school for each student will be sent home weekly.  Test folders will contain weekly academic and conduct grades as well as school-wide correspondence. Please sign where necessary and return test folders to school the next day.

  1. TEXTBOOKS

Textbooks and library books are the property of Terrebonne Parish School Board.  They are provided to educate children.  Each student is responsible for the proper care of books issued to him / her.  Parents and students will be held responsible for the cost of lost or damaged textbooks.

  1. REPORT CARDS / PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress Reports are issued 4 ½ weeks into each nine weeks, using the Student Progress Center/Parent Portal.

Report Cards are issued each nine weeks. Parents will view report cards using the Student Progress Center/Parent Portal.

  1. HONOR ROLL 
  1. Principal’s List – straight A’s in academics and conduct.
  2. A/B Honor Roll – combination of A’s and B’s in academics and conduct.

  1. PARENT PORTAL

Parents can view grades and discipline records in the Parent Portal provided by TPSD.  Please refer to information given in day one paperwork for directions on setting up an account.  

ATTENDANCE

1. ABSENCES/EXCUSES

    Your child MUST have a written excuse EVERY time he or she is absent.  

2. MAKE-UP WORK

    Students are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher to make-up any

    test or assignments. Work must be made up in a timely manner. Parents may request

    daily assignments if a child will be out for several days. Request for make up work

    must be made in the morning and picked up in the office between 2:45 PM and 3:15

    PM.

3. TARDY POLICY 

    The bell rings at 8:25 AM. Students who arrive after the bell rings will be considered tardy.  Students who are tardy to school must report with a parent / guardian to get an admit slip for class. Excessive tardiness will result in disciplinary action.

4. CHECKING IN & OUT OF SCHOOL 

   Once a student arrives on the school grounds, the student will not be permitted to

    leave unless the office approves it. Any student leaving the school must be signed out

    by a parent, guardian, or an authorized individual listed on the student’s check-out

    card. A valid ID must be shown each time a student is checked out of school.   If you plan to sign-out your child before the buses leave, please do so by 3:00.  There will be no sign outs after 3:00.

    All checkouts will be recorded as tardies (per TPSB Policy).

MEDICATION/ILLNESS

1. MEDICATION POLICY

    Terrebonne Parish School Board Policy prohibits teachers from giving students

    medicine. An authorization form for medication administration must be obtained

    from the office. The forms must be completed and signed by the doctor prescribing

    the medicine. Students are NOT allowed to keep prescribed or over-the-counter

   medication in their possession.

2. ILLNESS

    Any student who is not feeling well should inform the classroom teacher.  The student will be allowed to report to the health aide and a parent will be contacted.  

SCHOOLWIDE AND PARISH REGULATIONS

1. Dress and grooming are to conform to the Terrebonne Parish School Board mandated policy (See Student Code of Conduct). The administration will determine if a student’s attire or appearance is disruptive to the educational process.

2. School property (building and materials) is public property and will be treated with respect. NO ONE IS TO DESTROY OR DAMAGE PUBLIC PROPERTY.

3.  Cigarettes, tobacco, lighters, matches, alcoholic beverages, knives, guns, or weapons of any sort are not allowed at school (See Student Code of Conduct).

4. Students are not allowed to buy, trade, sell, or give away items on school grounds.

5. Students are not allowed to bring pets, animals, or insects to school.

6. Obscene or inappropriate language is prohibited at school.

7. All visitors must sign-in at the office.

8. Students may not threaten any student, teacher, or staff member nor make a threat to commit any act that would disrupt, impair, or interfere with the process, procedure, or function of the school.

OFFICE REFERRALS

If a student fails to respond to consequences issued by the teacher, then students will be referred to the office. Students are given ample opportunity to explain the circumstances to the administrator prior to the imposition of any punishment. The seriousness of the office referral or number of previous office referrals will determine the consequence issued by the office. If sent to the office with a discipline referral from class, a student will also receive an “F” in conduct for the week.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. PARENT CONFERENCES 

Conferences are scheduled as needed during the school year. Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s education. Parents may schedule a conference by emailing the teacher or calling 303-4838.  Conferences will be arranged at a time mutually convenient to the teacher and parent. Teachers cannot take conference calls during class time. Parents requesting a conference must do so prior to reporting to school.  If you need an in person conference, please call school and we will try to accommodate.  

2. VISITORS AND GUESTS 

Visitors or guests are required to check in with the office before entering the school.

3. DELIVERIES 

Any forgotten item should be brought to the office.  Please write your child’s name on any items.

4. PLAYGROUND AREAS

Students are assigned specific areas on the playground. These areas are designated by grade level, and students are expected to stay within the boundaries in which they are assigned.

5. LOST AND FOUND ITEMS 

Items lost during the school day are placed in the office.  Parents are encouraged to label all items, including jackets, sweaters, and coats with a permanent marker. Any items remaining in the “lost and found” area at the end of the school year will be donated to a charitable organization.

6. FIRE DRILLS, TORNADO DRILLS, EMERGENCY DRILLS

Various drills will be conducted periodically to teach students the proper way to leave the building or go to alternate emergency exit routes. Students are to quietly follow all directions given by teachers, police, or fire department personnel.

7. MONTHLY CALENDARS 

School calendars will be sent home at the beginning of each month. It is the student’s responsibility to give this information to parents.

8. CONCESSIONS 

Snacks are sold to students during recess. The cost of snacks is $.50 or $1.00 depending on the item.

REWARDS

1. STARBUCKS TICKETS – issued by teachers for positive behavior

2. VIP PASS- variety of rewards a student will receive once Starbucks are earned

3. STUDENT OF THE MONTH – one student per homeroom each month
