Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Justice

1. Purpose

This policy ensures KCAA and Discover Circus create a diverse, equitable, inclusive, and just environment for all staff, students, artists, volunteers, and community members.

Discover Circus is an inclusive space that warmly embraces individuals from all walks of life. Here, the spotlight is solely on exploring circus arts, free from ties to politics, religion, or societal perspectives. We value diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and identities, and prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion across all aspects. Discover Circus is a place where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is encouraged to explore their creativity in a welcoming and open environment.

2.  Commitments

2.1 Diversity & Representation: At the heart of our mission is the commitment to inclusivity and creating a welcoming and safe space where individuals of all backgrounds and experiences feel accepted. By building a strong community, we unite people who share a passion for the arts, encouraging collaboration and mutual support to inspire growth for artists at any level.

Practices:

• Actively include underrepresented voices in leadership, programs, and artist opportunities.
• Commit to equitable hiring, recruitment, and participation practices.

2.2 Accessibility: We believe in fostering growth through opportunities for both physical and mental well-being, creating a balance that empowers individuals to grow, connect, and express themselves freely. Our goal is to inspire participation in artistic endeavors, sharing the transformative power of art with our community and fostering an accessible environment, ensuring that every person, regardless of their abilities or circumstances, can participate and thrive. Whether through self-expression or celebrating body positivity, we ensure all bodies are welcomed and valued.

        Practices:

• Ensure physical, financial, and program accessibility for all.
• Offer sliding scale fees, scholarships, and partnerships to remove barriers and strive to provide affordable circus arts and offer alternative finance solutions to those in need

2.3 Inclusive Programming: Our organization is committed to fostering inclusivity at every level we can. We value diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and identities, and value equity, diversity, and inclusion in all facets of our operations. Our culture prioritizes open communication and collaboration, recognizing that embracing differences enriches our collective experiences and drives our success.

Practices:

• Deliver programs and performances that reflect diverse identities and lived experiences.
• Collaborate with LGBTQI+, Indigenous, disabled, and marginalized communities respectfully and authentically.

2.4 Training & Education: We recognize the significance of fostering a growth mindset, blending reflective practices with a compassionate, inquisitive, and thoughtful approach to addressing inequitable structures in our world. We offer support and resources to instructors and beyond, contributing to our broader mission of creating more just, compassionate, and sustainable societies.

        Practices:

• Provide annual DEIJ training for staff, leadership, and volunteers.
• Address bias, encourage allyship, and ensure accountability.
• Provide access to high-quality teaching and learning resources, offer mentorship to those eager to lead and engage in this important work, and encourage our instructors and students to conduct self-assessments and pursue fair and just practices.

3. Ethical Principles

3.1 Respect & Integrity:  We are dedicated to building a world where every person is treated with dignity and respect and has equal access to opportunities, starting from within our unique organization and budding out through our instructors, members and students and sparking out to the broader community.

Practices:

• Commit to a safe, harassment-free environment with zero tolerance for discrimination or bullying.
• Communicate clearly, respectfully, and transparently with all stakeholders.

3.2 Accountability: We strive to remain accountable to our community and open to change and new ideas. We understand that we may make mistakes and must remain open to feedback.

        Practices:

• Address concerns or violations quickly and fairly through a confidential reporting system.
• Regularly review and update policies to reflect community needs and best practices.

3.3 Ethical Artistic Practices: We embrace the joy of circus arts and are dedicated to engaging and encouraging their growth on a national and international level. By creating local and international connections, we help to build a stronger, more vibrant artistic community that uplifts everyone involved.

        Practices:

• Avoid cultural appropriation, stereotypes, or exploitation in performances.
• Honour cultural heritage through collaboration and consent.
• Respect intellectual property and fair compensation for artists and contributors.

4. Reporting & Review

• A DEIJ and Ethics Committee will oversee implementation and annual progress.
• Concerns can be reported confidentially and will be addressed promptly.
• This policy will be reviewed annually by the Board of Directors.
