Who is involved in planning the transition of the 6th grade to SJHS?

The committee working to ensure a smooth transition consists of parents, sixth grade teachers, counselors, principals, district staff and board members.  They started their work in the Fall of 2016 and will continue the process throughout this year.

When will the transition occur?

Sixth grade students will become a part of SJHS at the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

Where can I get information about this transition?

This site will house all update and information about the transition.

Why is this change occurring?

Interest in considering the move of 6th grade to SJHS started in the Fall of 2015.  After investigation a recommendation was made to make 6th grade part of the junior high to streamline curriculum and instruction with one grade housed under one roof, extend extracurricular opportunities and best utilize resources to meet the needs of students.

Will my student still have one teacher like at the elementary?

All students will start the day with their Advisory Team Teacher; this teacher will be the main point of contact for each family.  Class celebrations will be planned with this teacher. Students will also experience moving to a different teacher for some subjects and in explore classes.

This “HYBRID” model as we call it was crafted to support the needs of our new sixth grade students while easing them toward more independence in working with different teachers.

My child is currently a 6th grade student.  What will this year look like for us?

As the last class of 6th grade at the elementary level, this group will experience the final year of sixth grade promotion ceremonies at each elementary school.

In continuing with tradition, each elementary school will work with its families and PTO to plan a spring event or trip to mark the of the end of the elementary experience for sixth grade students.  Each school will decide what this event or trip will look like locally.  Contact your elementary principal with questions.

Your child’s teacher, principal and counselor will work with SJHS staff to welcome your child to SJHS through a process carried out yearly where elementary students are given the chance to talk with and ask questions of current SJHS students before visiting SJHS.  In May, 6th grade students will visit SJHS where they can learn more, tour the building with a student guide and ask questions.

My child is currently a 5th grade student.  What will this year look like for us?

All elementary schools are excited to start a new tradition beginning in May 2018 with end-of-year school year school-wide recognitions for 5th Grade Classes.  This will not be a promotion ceremony, but it will be special tradition that will continue with all future 5th grade classes!

In continuing with tradition, each elementary school will work with its families and PTO to plan a spring event or trip to mark the of the end of the elementary experience - this is a special year for 5th grade.

In May, 5th grade students will visit SJHS where they can learn more, tour the building with a student guide and ask questions.

There will be three family nights for 5th grade families starting in February 2018.  Information will be shared at each event and Southmont representatives will be available to hear and respond to questions.

The end of 6th Grade was sometimes celebrated with a class trip in the elementary.  Will this be the case when 6th grade moves to SJHS?

Students will participate in team- and character-building  activities throughout the year at SJHS in lieu of an end-of-the-year trip.

Field trips that extend the classroom experience will continue to be a part of the educational experience.
