Pitman Middle School's "PEP Green" was one of twenty groups to participate in the Southern Regional "STEAM Tank" Competition on March 23, 2018. Sponsored by NJSBA and the U.S. Army, "STEAM Tank" challenges students in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) through participation in series of challenges modeled on the “Shark Tank” television show. Our students were asked to brainstorm and create “innovative projects”/ present before a judging panel of business and education entrepreneurs. Our students are in the process of developing a self- sustaining greenhouse that controls irrigation by collecting, storing, and distributing water using a Bluetooth enabled device. Irrigation timing is controlled by a computer app coded by our students. Along with the development of the product, all materials will be bundled into a website that provides directions, models, and plans so other schools can build their own greenhouses. Our students pitched this idea and presented the current progress to a panel of judges during the competition. If selected, our students could move on to October’s final competition that’s hosted in Atlantic City.
