Sharing and Visualizing Data

During this activity you will be sharing your data collection with your partner with the goal of thinking through how you will create a visual representation of your data. Take some time to share your reactions to your data collection with your partner. Focus on one person’s data at a time. Start with one of your data collections and discuss the following questions. Then switch to the other person and respond to these questions for their data collection.

As you are talking, take notes and doodles for yourself that will help you as you begin to design and draw your visual representation of your data. This is an opportunity to be creative in your design.

Data discussion questions:

• What did you find interesting about your data?
• What did you notice about the variability in your data?
• What are the factors you will show in your data?

Brainstorm discussion questions:

• Review some samples of other students’ visual representations of their data.
• How might you present your data visually?

• What might the visual look like?
• What sources of variability are in your data? How might you represent that variability in your visual? What shapes, designs, colors, or patterns might you use?
• What might your key look like? Are there specific types of visuals you are drawn to?

Share your thinking in your Dear Data slideshow from Make Your Own Dear Data Postcard Project Overview:

• On a slide(s), share your reactions to your data.
• On a slide(s), share your brainstorm on the design of your visual representation of your data. Include pictures of your notes and doodles from your conversation with your partner.
