Scan a document from your phone using Genius Scan free version


To do this, you will need to download the Genius Scan app from Google Play or the Apple App Store

How to scan a document to PDF.  (Screenshots are from the Android version, Apple may differ).  Please be aware that there are several good apps that will scan documents

  • Open the App, click the camera in the blue circle
  • The first time you use the app, you may be prompted to allow it to take pictures and record video.  Allow this
  • The scan screen opens.  Aim the camera at the sheet you are scanning.  It will outline the sheet in orange if one is recognized.  If you hold still for several seconds while the sheet is outlined, the app will scan it automatically.  You can also click the orange button on the bottom of the screen to scan manually.  Multiple sheets can be scanned into the same document
  • When done scanning all pages, click the checkbox in the lower right of the screen
  • The document can be renamed from the app’s default by entering it in the field in the top of the menu.  More pages can be scanned by clicking the plus sign on the bottom right.
  • to delete page(s), click the 3 dots on the upper right of the screen, then select delete.  The app will ask you to confirm
  • When the document is named and all pages scanned, it can be shared from this screen by clicking the share button on the top right menu
  • The Export Document dialogue appears =-
  • Format:  either PDf or JPEG.  to make fillable documents, leave this setting on JPG
  • File size: the options here are Actual Size, Large, Medium and small.  The smaller the file the less detailed it may be.  You may run into issues sending a larger document via email
  • Password encryption:  if you want to password protect the document
  • Export to (send) options.  Only the ones included in the free version of Genius Scan are mentioned here.  Other options (including uploading to Google Drive), are unlocked in the paid version of the app.
  • Device memory:  saves the document to your device.  
  • Other apps, Gmail (you’ll need to scroll a bit):  will email the document to an address you enter after selecting this option.  If you plan to edit this document on your computer, Gmail is the option to choose.
