Who is this programme for:

• Project leads/mentees: People interested to lead any projects they are working on or want to develop. They can be early-career researchers, support staff, business and core team members, community and project managers etc.
• Experts: People interested in providing support, providing learning materials, consultation to our mentees or speaking at the calls
• Partner organisations: Organisations and teams who would like to collaborate with OLS to lead this program in their own network or promote OLS in their community

Examples of projects that one can bring to the program:

• Researchers and data scientists: applying open, reproducible and FAIR principles to their current research, data management plan, collaborative workflow design, tooling and roadmapping, the publication of research outcome, a side project they are working on, an app they are building for social good, a prototype they want to further enhance etc.
• Business team members: collaborative projects with the researcher, public engagement, dissemination of research output, community engagement, survey and feedback collection, infrastructure design, resource hosting services etc.
• Support staff members: data management, reproducible workflow, FAIRification of research components (training, data, web source etc.), support documents for their colleagues, participatory & citizen science
• Community/project managers: community-building skills, community development project, collaborative research, training and education opportunity etc.

Open Life Science is a 16-week mentoring and training program that upskills individuals in open and reproducible research and empowers them to become open science ambassadors in their communities. Following five succesful cohorts, supporting 147 projects and 251 project leads, the sixth cohort, OLS-6, is open for application until July 7, 2022. We are reaching out to you to share that we have opened the call for applications for the sixth round of Open Life Science (OLS-6) mentoring and training program. 

OLS upskills individuals in open and reproducible research and empowers them to become open science ambassadors in their communities. Participants of this 16-week program will learn essential knowledge required to create, lead, and sustain an Open Science project, connect with members across different communities, backgrounds, and identities by sharing their experiences and expertise. The applications will close on July 7, 2022 on Open Review (see application guidelines and templates).

More about the Mentors and Experts:

1. An OLS mentor has either already received training as a project lead in OLS (or similar programs) or has significant experience leading, maintaining or contributing to open and inclusive projects in their field.

2. Mentor’s roles and time commitments:

Mentors work closely with participants to help further their Open Science skills and become ambassadors for Open Science practice, training and education in their communities.

• Time commitment: ~2 hours in July to review applicants and ~1 hour per week during the cohort. You can read more about it on our website.
• The mentors will be assigned to one project proposed by mentees applying to the program.
• During the program, mentors will receive initial training in mentoring skills (active listening, effective questioning, giving feedback), connect with a community of mentors by opting to attend the coworking calls and expand their knowledge on Open Science by opting to attend the cohort calls.
• For OLS-6, we are happy to be able to provide an honorarium for mentors.

3. Experts’ roles and time commitments: Experts have existing experience in a relevant subject area and may be invited to:

• give a ~15-minute talk at one of our cohort calls during the program, you can read more about it on our website.
• attend a mentor-mentee call upon request for expert consultation on certain projects in the program (~30 minutes once or twice in the entire program).
