FFG Hikers head to Scotts Gulf State Wilderness November 14, 2025
On November 14th the FFG hikers will travel 45 miles to the Virgin FallsTH to hike the Ambers Den Trail.This is a new hike for us. Ambers Den is a 5.5 mile through hike requiring a 2 mile car shuttle. We will meet at the Virgin Falls parking lot to set up the shuttle. We will start the hike at Welch’s Point Overlook. We will descend the mountain on a gravel/dirt road. We will stop by Amber's Den, then hike to Big Laurel Falls.
Passing interesting boulders and views of the Caney Fork River. We will have lunch enjoying the beautiful scenery around Laurel Falls falls. After lunch we go back up the mountain via the Hemlock Springs trail,finishing the hike at the Virgin Falls trailhead.
Difficulty: Trail is Rated Moderate+ due to a long climb returning to the Trailhead.
Driver reimbursement for gas for this hike is $4.00. Departure is at 8 AM sharp. Return to FFG about 4pm.
The group will meet in the pavilion in the parking lot at the “Square” at Peavine Rd. and Stonehenge Dr between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. Car pools will be formed and driving instructions will be distributed.

Anyone interested in hiking is welcome. Hikers will meet in the pavilion by the parking lot in the Square at the intersection of Peavine Road and Stonehenge Drive between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. Car pools will be formed and information about the hike will be distributed. Departure to the trailhead will be promptly at 8:00 a.m. Reimbursement fee for drivers for this hike is $6.00. The expected time to return to FFG is approximately 3 pm.
This hike is rated Moderate+; however, as always, we recommend hiking boots and hiking poles, especially for those new to trail hiking. Hiking has risks and safety is a high priority on every outing. The hiking group assumes no collective or individual liability for any mishaps. Hiking is at your own risk.
Participants should be in good physical condition. Walking on paved and level surfaces does not compare with hiking on uneven trails with elevation changes. Please assess your level of fitness to the difficulty of the hike so you can keep up with the group.

General guidelines for rating hikes
EASY, hikes between 3 miles or less miles elevation gains of less than250 feet , well maintained
MODERATE hikes Between 3 to 6 miles with elevation gains 250 t0 500 feet, Uneven, steep areas.
DIFFICULT .hikes over 6 miles with elevation gains 500 to 800 feet, steep, rocky, rough terrain.
STRENUOUS hikes with over 1000 feet elevation gain.
Please assess your level of fitness to the difficulty of the hike so that you can keep up with the group.

Please, always check in with the leader at the pavilion before going to the trailhead, because plans may change at the last minute due to weather or trail conditions. Also, sometimes the leader will change where we will park if there are too many cars for some of the smaller trailhead parking areas.
