 The Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) at Ming Hui Academy Boston invites adults aged 18 and older to join our immersive Chinese language and culture program this fall.

Our curriculum emphasizes practical Mandarin proficiency—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—using traditional Chinese characters. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to advance your skills, our program is thoughtfully designed to support your language goals.

In addition to language instruction, students will explore Taiwanese culture through a variety of enriching activities and workshops. These experiences offer unique insights into the Taiwanese vibrant heritage, customs, and traditions.

We welcome you to become part of a supportive and engaging learning community where language and culture come alive together.

TCML@MHAB Course Description

Experience a Unique Mandarin Learning Journey at the Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning at Ming Hui Academy Boston

The Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning (TCML) at Ming Hui Academy Boston offers a dynamic and culturally immersive Mandarin learning experience for adult students. With generous support from the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), Republic of China (Taiwan), our program provides students with complimentary learning materials, including textbooks, workbooks, and audio resources.

Classes meet for three hours each week, combining structured language instruction with engaging cultural content. In addition, students are invited to join optional cultural enrichment sessions held every other Saturday from 1:00–2:30 PM. These workshops offer hands-on experiences in a range of traditional Taiwanese arts and practices, such as:

• Chinese Calligraphy
• Culinary Arts
• Arts & Crafts
• Exercise & Meditation

This integrated approach allows students to not only build strong language skills but also develop a meaningful appreciation of Taiwanese culture and heritage.

Language Course Levels

Introduction to Mandarin – Book 0

A beginner-level course designed for students with little to no background in Mandarin.
Key areas of focus include:

• Introduction to pronunciation and tones through the phonetic system (Zhuyin or Pinyin)
• Basic vocabulary and character writing with correct stroke order
• Simple sentence structures and conversational patterns
  

By the end of the semester, students will be able to:

• Pronounce basic Chinese characters
• Write simple characters correctly
• Exchange greetings and personal information
• Introduce themselves and ask about others' names and nationalities
• Use basic kinship terms
• Begin reading short passages and listening to simple stories
  

Basic Mandarin – Book 1

For students with foundational knowledge of Mandarin. This course continues to build vocabulary, reading, and writing skills with a focus on practical conversation.
By semester’s end, students will be able to:

• Discuss dates and time
• Make social plans
• Celebrate birthdays in Mandarin
• Talk about weather and seasons
• Order food and beverages in a restaurant
• Engage in shopping-related conversations

Basic Mandarin – Book 2

This course begins with a review of material from Book 2 and continues into new chapters focused on real-life scenarios and communication.
Students will:

• Engage in everyday conversations
• Improve reading and listening comprehension
• Participate in cultural events such as Lunar New Year and Dragon Boat Festival performances
• Take weekly quizzes to monitor progress

By the end of the term, students will be able to:

• Talk about clothing and fashion
• Give and understand directions
• Describe locations
• Share daily routines
• Discuss common health issues
• Plan travel to Taiwan

Basic Mandarin – Book 3

Designed for students progressing into more advanced Mandarin.
Students will:

• Build confidence in speaking Mandarin in class

• Read and comprehend short stories and dialogues
• Engage in longer and more natural conversations
• Take regular quizzes at the end of each chapter
• Participate in cultural events (e.g., acting or emceeing for school celebrations)
• Begin optional preparation for the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL)

Basic Mandarin – Book 4

A continuation into more advanced daily conversation and cultural literacy.
Students will:

• Expand vocabulary with more nuanced topics
• Writing in Chinese sentences.
• Take on active roles in cultural events (MCs or performers)
• Prepare (optionally) for the TOCFL at the end of the course

 Intermediate Mandarin – Book 5

A continuation into more advanced daily conversation and cultural literacy.
Students will:

• Writing in short paragraphs to present ideas.
• Practice public speaking and presentation in Mandarin
• Begin reading newspaper articles and real-world texts
• Prepare (optionally) for the TOCFL at the end of the course
