Administrative Information

Access:  Collection is at the DC History Center. It is open to all people by appointment.

Reproduction and use:  All material is believed to be under copyright.  Contact RHP for permission to duplicate.

Acquisition information:  The material was donated in June 2014 by Thomas E. Brown, the partner of the late Jim Lemley, who served as treasurer of the Gay Community Center (at the request of then president Bob Roehr).  When the Gay Community Center was being evicted from its space on 17th street; Brown and Lemley salvaged the records from the office.  They were organized by Brown and then stored in their U St. storage shed in DC, until 2006, when they moved to Rehoboth Beach. As the treasurer and corporate officer of the organization, Lemley held custody and ownership of the records  after the demise of the GCC/DC; after his death in 2006, Brown inherited the records and titles as the sole heir of the Lemley estate.

Processing history:

2014.07.09  Chuck Goldfarb transported the records from the home of Thomas Brown in Delaware to his home in DC.

2014.07.26  Chuck along with Timothy Meagher, Richard Haight, Esperanza Pastor and Vincent Slatt assessed the materials and created a processing plan and initial inventory and draft finding aid.

2015.07.25 Chuck, Vincent, Jon Shimabukuro, Sarah Geselowitz and Cheryl Fong revisited the original folders, consolidated and alphabetized the material, and removed duplicates when identified. Collection is ready for final folders; transport to HSW; and final boxes.

2017.04.08.  Transferred materials from Chuck’s home to Vincent Slatts. Vincent with volunteers John Bailey and Brett Jens relabelled some folders and broke into boxes.

2017.04.16 Brett completed the relabelling and updated the folder labels in the inventory.

2017.05.03 Vincent scanned the photographs from the album, and placed them in printed order in archival sleeves.

2017.06.08 Vincent delivered the collection to HSW.

Series 3: Photo Album

The Gay Community Center: A Place of Our Own, at 1469 Church Street

This photo album documents the creation and early events of the GCC. The first few pages show the creation of the GCC, with some before and after contrast photos. The subsequent photos document a birthday party, presumably of the GCC. Another event that it documents is a promotion of the Center, which included two lovers riding bikes to Harpers Ferry to benefit the GCC. One photo shows a group at Le Gaulois Cafe. Another set of photos documents the GCC holiday party of 1979. It is a magnetic album, with 70 photos: 23-4x5; 39-5x7; 9-3.5x3.5; and 3-8x10.
