SRCS Summer Camp 2019

Session 1A    June 10th-14th    9:00am-12:00pm

Band Camp:

Would you like to play flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone or drums?  Do you already play in band?  Come join us for Band Camp at SRCS!  Geared for beginners or those who already play, this camp is open to students in rising 1-8th grade. Campers will play in an ensemble setting and learn skills such as rhythm, posture and reading music.  There will be a performance on the last day. This is a fun introduction to the SRCS band program.  Come and make music with us this summer! *Students must supply their own instruments; however, there is a limited number available to borrow. Please contact Andrew Hawks at ahawks@cghsnc.orgto see if an instrument is available for your camper. Other local instrument rental options are available at Music & Arts.

Volleyball:

Come out and play volleyball with Coach Adkins! Camp will focus on skill development and game play.  Experience isn't necessary! Need the following for camp:  a snack, knee pads, a water bottle and a positive attitude!

Doll Making Camp:

In this camp, the campers will combine Social Studies with creativity. They will learn the crafting and story behind various dolls. Students will also have a blast using a variety of materials to create 4 to 5 diverse dolls from different cultures and time periods.

Magic Tree House STEM Adventures Camp:

Rising 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade Guardians are invited to join Jack and Annie on marvelous STEM adventures. We will use the themes and settings of the Magic Tree House series to help us explore many aspects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. We will become Engineers, Mathematicians, and Scientists through our hands on learning!

Running and Fitness Camp:

This camp is open to all rising 5th – 8th grade students, whether you are new to the sport of running or are a seasoned runner.  This camp will provide opportunities for a wide variety of running and fitness activities.  We will discuss topics such as conditioning, stretching, flexibility, pacing, nutrition, motivation, and cross training. Come out and enjoy some outdoor fun!

Travel the world in 5 days! Hello, Bon Jour, Buenos Dias! Join Ms. von Lehmden on a thrilling trip around the world. We will learn about different countries as we explore the native games, food, songs, and more.

DIY American Girl Doll Accessories Camp:

In this session, campers will exercise their DIY skills while making American Girl doll accessories that won’t break the bank! Each day will follow a new theme. The themes include: school, outdoors, food/holiday, sleepover/camping, and arts & crafts.

Creative Writing Camp:

Students will create several short works of fiction including but not limited to:  poems, short stories and narratives.  A portfolio of work will be created to take home at the end of the week. Students will need a composition book, a writing utensil, a snack and a novel to read

Young Writers Camp:

Calling all authors!  Let your imagination run wild!  In Young Writers Camp, we will explore many writing techniques while using a variety of formats to produce finished products.  We will also have the special opportunity of collaborating with older students to produce a creative story.

“Fairytastic Unicorn Camp”:

Come explore the magical world of unicorns. Upcoming first and second graders will have so much fun making projects and hearing enchanting stories about the world of unicorns.

Irish Dance Camp:

Campers will learn the art of Irish dance. They will hear the lingo and try the steps of this traditional form of dance. By the end of the week, campers will know both solo and “ceili” or group Irish dances. Parents are invited to join our final performance at the end of camp.

“Kids Bootcamp”:

High energy workouts designed to introduce your children to cardiovascular and resistance training with fun in mind.  Each day will have a different area of focus ranging from athletic conditioning to body weight exercises, with special attention to form and technique.  The program is designed to not only show the kids how fun working out can be, but also to foster a sense of strength, confidence and community among fellow campers.

Keyboarding Camp:

Keyboarding is fast becoming a standard skill, which is currently used in classrooms. At Keyboarding Camp, students will have fun learning! They will become familiar with typing techniques, posture, accuracy and speed.

Math Activity Camp:

*Daily Snack Attack: learn word problems in a fun way, assembling a snack!

*Design your own math board game

*Create your own taco food truck and run your own mini business (area, perimeter, money)

*Make robots using 3-D shapes (geometry)

*Tangram Puzzles (geometry)

*M & M math (place value)

*Play math games like giant connect 4, card games, dice games, tic tac toe, and “mathsket ball” (math fact fluency- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

Compassion Camp:

We’re gardeners, we grow things like basil and lavender and peonies. We know the power of growing something tiny into something beautiful. We put on our garden hats and ask, what if we could grow something bigger and lovelier than even sunflowers? What if we could grow... UNDERSTANDING? KINDNESS? EMPATHY? The things we want in a FRIEND and a NEIGHBOR. The things we try to cultivate at SRCS summer camp.

Sewing:

Want to learn basic sewing skills and make fun projects? This is the camp for you! You’ll learn how to sew by hand and machine, follow a simple pattern, and create one-of-a-kind keepsakes to take home.  Some projects include a Christmas ornament, placemat, lanyards, and stuffed animals. It’ll be “sew” much fun!

Sewing:

We would make 3 projects. A pillow, pajama pants, and a tote bag. Also, explore monogramming. It would cover the fundamentals of sewing and the machine. We would end the week with a fashion show displaying the work the students completed. Light refreshments served.
