Intro: Anthem Excitement

The new year is here which means Anthem is just around the corner: Feb. 22nd.

Questions

The simplest way I can think to break down concerns around Anthem are two questions:

1.) How Bioware is Anthem? How Much EA?

INTRO Banter

A lot of the early chatter around Anthem was obviously from Bioware fans. This game doesn’t look like Mass Effect. And it’s an even further cry from Dragon Age.

My thoughts in short: It’s pretty hard not to be concerned from the point of a Bioware fan. Personally,I haven’t LOVED a Bioware game since Mass Effect 2. I enjoyed 3, but it did not live up to its predecessor. Inquisition didn’t hook me and I haven’t even tried Andromeda.

The studio lost their general manager Aaryn Flynn, Mass Effect’s writer Drew Karpyshyn (though he did work on Anthem for about two years before leaving), Dragon Age’s creative director Mike Laidlaw, and 22 year veteran James Ohlen (who worked on Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Jade Empire and Dragon Age: Origins) left late last year.

Q: Are you concerned with the loss of so many notable Bioware veterans?

Personally, I see the departure from previous work as a good thing because Bioware’s recent revisits to their classic formula just haven’t hit the mark.

2.) Is it a good shoot and loot game?

Strip away the preconceptions that come with Bioware and look at what we’ve seen so far from strictly a gameplay aspect. Shoot and loot games. This is now a genre. At the beginning of this console generation Destiny and The Division were just shiny E3 demos we hoped would be good. Many of us, myself included, were pretending like Warframe didn’t exist and holding our breath to see if MMO-like experiences would finally make it to consoles. In short, I don’t think it has. But that’s not to discount these games entirely.

I’ve played a lot of the original Destiny and its sequel, and we’ve both played a good amount of The Division.

Just caught up on the latest weeksauce. Cars, bourbon, Blizzard games and a bit of Star Wars. If you could have snuck in some talk about cigars you would have had covered all my favorite subjects.

While talking about Kyle's Baja you mentioned how no car maker in the US does a 'ute anymore. I wanted to let Garrett know about Smyth Performance. https://www.smythkitcars.com/ 

Mark Smith is the guy who started factory Five Racing, Smyth Performance is his new company. They make kits to turn cars into 'utes. They started with VW's and Audi's but have moved into Dodge Chargers and the newest kit is for the Subaru Impreza WRX. You can basically build a modern version of the old school Brat. I am seriously considering building one of the Impreza kits, I just need to find a decent donor car first.

If you do the Facebook, be sure to follow them. Mark does Facebook live videos all the time to show progress on designing and building the kits.

I have been an Amove.TV listener for a couple of years but just started listening to Weeksauce. It is like two old friends having a conversation over a beer, and I am greatly enjoying being able to listen.

I know from listening to other podcasts that Kyle has been working out quite a bit trying to stay healthy; Garrett I know you are as well. I work out 3-4 days a week and have maintained a constant weight for the last 3 years plus or minus a few pounds. The problem is I want to lose more, but I struggle in the healthy eating area. I break too easily for sweets and chips. So how do you control temptation, is it just strong will or do you have alternatives to sweets that you eat? I know I can Google this and find a ton of websites, but I -wanted to ask two down to earth, normal guys.

PC GAMER: Left 4 Dead developer hiring for unannounced AAA game in 'globally-known franchise'

“Left 4 Dead and Evolve developer Turtle Rock Studios is working on an unannounced AAA game in a "globally-known franchise", job listings on its website have revealed.

...the developer is looking for candidates that have experience "working with modern FPS engines" and "working on competitive FPSs". Whoever it hires will create "competitive and balanced map layouts".

In 2016, the developer said it was working on a dark fantasy co-op FPS—a "new franchise set in an all new universe". It hasn't said much about that game since, so it's hard to say how, or if, this new FPS will be related.”

Slay the Spire adds third game mode, reaches one million copies sold

Excellent deck-building roguelike Slay the Spire has now sold one million copies, developer Mega Crit Games said this week as it unveiled a new game mode that allows you to craft custom dungeon runs.

Custom mode, Slay the Spire's third game mode, offers a variety of modifiers to switch on and off that will drastically change your next run. You can jump into the custom dungeon yourself, or share your options with others for them to try.

The 15 or so modifiers can both make the runs easier or harder. For example, one will let you pick your own custom deck before the run starts, while another changes the map so it only contains one path, cutting down your options. Some will add specific cards to your deck to alter your play style. Switch on all the difficult ones and you'll create a near-impossible challenge.

To unlock the mode, you'll first have to complete one of the difficult daily challenges, which will earn you the "My Lucky Day" achievement.

I want to know about skiing!

I seem to remember on an episode of ITN (or maybe even StarCast, it was quite a while ago) that Kyle mentioned he skis, or likes skiing or something like that.  Also, it was kinda cold in Florida recently right?  So I wondered if Garrett has ever skied (or more likely snowboarded because that the cool thing for our generation, right?) and what your thoughts are on winter snow sports in general.  

In the case that I'm mistaken, and Kyle never said such a thing, then feel free to just say the word snow and move on.

Since the season is upon us, what are your favorite Christmas/Seasonal Specials and Songs?

No, I don't mean Die Hard here, but the sort of cheesy movie made to celebrate (or maybe exploit) the holidays.

Personally I'm a fan of the original animated Grinch from 1966 and the Muppet Christmas Carol (with Michael Caine), but the one I make sure to watch every year is "A Muppet Family Christmas" from 1987, an hour long TV Special that (in my opinion) perfectly captures the spirit of Christmas and all it's best feelings.

On the song front I'm partial to "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas" for a few reasons, or anything from Jimmy Buffett's "Christmas Island" album.
