Step 1: Introduction of Camtasia interface

  1. Toolbar & Media - “Media”, “Favourites”, “Annotations”
  2. Canvas - For you to preview your video
  3. Properties panel - For you to edit the settings of your video clip, audio clip and effects, etc.
  4. Timeline - For you to view and edit the details of your video by using Zoom In/Out and Tracks.
  1. Tip: The timeline is organized into layers, which we call tracks, where media on the top layers cover the ones below.

Step 2: Recording and editing your first screencast

  1. Record your screen using the Camtasia recorder
  1. Click ‘New Recording’ when you launch the Camtasia software, OR
  2. Click on ‘Record’ at the top left corner in the Camtasia interface
  1. Import Camtasia projects
  1. [For Mac]
  1. Double click on the Camtasia project (.cmproj), OR
  2. Open Camtasia > ‘File’ > ‘Open Project’ > 1. Sample Video_Mac.cmproj
  1. [For Windows]
  1. In Camtasia > ‘File’ > ‘Import’ > ‘Zipped Project’ > ‘1. Sample
  2. Note: No need to unzip the file after you download it.
  1. Trim your video by shortening your clip
  1. Exercise: Remove the slide content ‘Sample Video’ at the beginning of the track and ‘The End’ at the end of the track
  1. Preview your project in the Canvas

Step 3.1 Video editing basics

  1. ‘Split’ and insert new content
  1. Purpose:
  1. If you miss one slide in the middle of your video, you can record a new slide, split your original clip and add the new content on the timeline in your video project.
  1. [For Windows and Mac] Right-click on Playhead + “Split All”
  2. Exercise: ‘Split’ at Point 1 and add ‘2. New Content.mp4’ to the timeline
  3. Preview your project in the Canvas

Step 3.2 Adding simple annotations

  1. Purpose:
  1. Annotation is useful for highlighting essential information in your video.
  1. [For both Windows and Mac]
  1. Go to ‘Annotation’ in Toolbar & Media > ‘Shapes’  to add a frame AND
    Go to ‘Annotation’ in Toolbar & Media > ‘Callouts’  to add texts
  1. Exercise: Add a frame to highlight [Examples] and add texts: “Click here”

Step 4: Audio editing basics

  1. Increase/Decrease the video volume
  1. Volume level represented by a green line on the audio track
  2. Tip: If you do not see a green line on your audio track, please right click and select ‘Edit Audio’ [same for both Windows and Mac]
  3. Exercise: Change the volume level of your audio track by moving the green line up/down.

Step 5: Exporting your first video

  1. Save/Backup your Camtasia project
  1. [For Mac] ‘File’ > ‘Save As…’ > ‘Create standalone project’
  2. [For Windows] ‘File’ > ‘Export’ > ‘Zipped project’
  1. Export your finished video
  1. [For Mac] “Export” (The green button at the top right corner) > select “Local File”
  2. [For Windows] “Share” (The green button at the top right corner) > select “Local File”
  1. Exercise: Try exporting your finished video
