This weekly newsletter is for parents and community members. Updates are made every Friday so that everyone can plan for the following week. Be sure to check this newsletter weekly for important updates. The same message will be sent via Parent Square. Use the table of contents for quick navigation.

Dear Duff Community,

It is the most wonderful and busiest time of the year! Thank you to everyone who came in for parent-teacher conferences. I hope these meetings were meaningful for you in understanding your child’s social and academic progress.

PTO Membership. If you are not yet a PTO member, please become a member with a $10 donation. All the donations go back to your students, paying for buses for field trips, awards goodies, and other opportunities. Check in with the front office for a membership form.

If we are able to have 100% participation from parents in PTO membership by Wednesday, December 20, the students are casting their votes to: 1) pie my face, 2) spray me with silly string, or 3) have me dress in a Grinch or elf costume and do a silly dance. This will only happen at the Holiday Performance on December 22 if we have 100% membership participation! Join today!

Student Council. Our council members have been taking turns recording weekly messages that the whole school watches to prepare for the following week. They are getting ready to sell holiday grams starting next Thursday, December 14 to Wednesday, December 20.

Holiday Decorating Contest. Each class has been assigned their area to decorate along the many fences around our school. The overall theme is “holiday cheer” and each class will come up with something more specific. Students may be asking you for assistance in gathering supplies. All areas must be decorated by Tuesday, December 19; judging will take place on Wednesday, December 20 in the morning.

GSD Toy Drive. Student Support Services is holding a Toy Drive to bring joy to families. At Duff, we’ll be collecting unwrapped gifts, gift cards, and non-expired foods to bring over to the Superintendent’s office on December 15. Your generosity is appreciated. Anything helps!

School Site Council Meeting. We will push back our SSC meeting that is scheduled on December 20 to January 2024 so that we’ll have the District’s funding approval.

Word of the Week. Next week’s focus word will be generous. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: showing a readiness to give more of something, as money or time, than is strictly necessary or expected. In a sentence: The generous parents provided diligent Duff students with goodies for Halloween. Please encourage your students to use this word and practice this concept throughout the week. They’re rocking their vocabulary growth with their sentences!

Youth Substance Abuse Parent Workshop. There’s a free workshop conducted in English, Spanish, and Chinese for parents on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, 3:30-4:30 PM at Willard Elementary School. Information is posted on Parent Square.

Dear Duff Community,

What a great week after coming back from the week of Thanksgiving Break! It was wonderful to see so many of you on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for the various school and community events we had. All of you make Duff a great school and your involvement makes us a better, stronger school.

Next Week - Parent Teacher Conferences.

Monday-Thursday, dismissal will be at 1:35. If your students attend Woodcraft, you will not be affected.

Thursday - Students who participate in Lion Dance will have lessons from 1:35-2:35.

Friday - There is no school for students on Friday, December 8.
Be sure you have booked an appointment with your student’s teachers. If you need help with getting an appointment, any of our office staff will be happy to help you.

Fundraisers. Thank you everyone who participated in our blanket and Pacific fundraisers! The funds earned from these will help pay for school buses on field trips, PBIS rewards, teacher supply closet, and goodies at the monthly awards assembly, on top of other items.

Parent Technology Training. We had a full room on Friday for the technology training. If you were not able to come, no worries! The information can be found on our school website when you click on For Families > Parent Trainings.

Coffee with the Principal. We have our monthly Coffee together on Tuesday, December 5, 8:30-9:30 in the Cafeteria (not the MPR). I’ll be sharing two programs that we use: Leader in Me and Thinking Maps.

PTO. We had a great PTO meeting on Tuesday. Thank you to everyone who joined in-person and online.

PTO needs assistance with planning our Chinese New Year festival scheduled for Friday, February 23, 2024, approximately 5-9 PM. To bring in the Year of the Dragon, we’ll be hosting a community festival where everyone in the school and surrounding community will be welcome. We need parents to lead planning for activities, performances, and food.
Membership. We currently have 60% participation from our students and parents; 100% participation from Duff Staff. Our goal is to reach 100% by December 20! Duff students will have a special surprise with 100% participation from all classes, as determined by Student Council.

Holiday Decorating Contest. We will be hosting a holiday decorating contest this year. We’ll let each class know the area they will be decorating. The theme is “holiday cheer”. Students may be asking you for assistance in gathering supplies. All areas must be decorated by Tuesday, December 19; Judging will take place on Wednesday, December 20 in the morning.

School Site Council Meeting. We’ll be meeting on Wednesday, December 20 from 2-3 PM to approve of our School Plan. Everyone is welcome to attend.

December Leader in Me Habit Focus. We’ll be focusing on Habit #4, Think Win-Win this month. This habit focuses on the importance of having a cooperative mindset, where agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying. It helps students recognize that not everything is a competition with winners and losers because winning at the expense of someone else does not always make us happy.

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be cooperative. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: Marked by a willingness and ability to work with others. In a sentence: We can practice Habit #4, Think Win-Win when we have a cooperative mindset.. Please encourage your students to use this word and practice this concept throughout the week. They’re rocking their vocabulary growth with their sentences!

Dear Duff Community,

Welcome to the end of Trimester 1 and the beginning of Trimester 2. Your students have worked incredibly hard during the first third of the school year. I hope your students and you are enjoying and relaxing during this Thanksgiving Break. I am beyond thankful to have your students at Duff and to have your family’s involvement in our school. I am constantly impressed by the sincerity and thoughtfulness demonstrated by our Duff Dragons and it’s all because of your influences. Thank you, for being the supportive parents and community members a principal can only dream of having at a school site.

Fundraiser. On Thursday, we sent home our winter fundraiser with Pacific Fundraising. Our sales start from now until November 30th. All monies and order forms need to be turned in on Friday, December 1, 2023. Your orders will arrive on December 18th and we’ll have students take home orders that week. Family and friends gatherings are a great place to have them participate in this fundraiser! We hope to raise funding for school buses that will take students on field trips and provide other learning supplies for them.

Parent Teacher Conferences. With the end of the trimester, our teachers are busy preparing student report cards. The designated week to have Parent Teacher Conferences is December 4-8. On Monday-Thursday, December 4-7, students will be released at 1:35 PM. If your students attend Woodcraft, you will not be affected. There is no school for students on December 8. Please make the necessary arrangements!

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be reflective. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: To be thoughtful. In a sentence: Reflective and considerate students understand the importance of thinking before speaking. Please encourage your students to use this word and practice this concept throughout the week. They’re rocking their vocabulary growth with their sentences!

Spelling Bee. Our 2nd-5th grade students are invited to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee this year. We’ll be hosting the schoolwide Bee on Tuesday, January 30, 2024 at 1:30 PM and our top 3 spellers will be sent to the district competition on February 28, 2024. English teachers will be hosting their classroom spelling bee between January 16-23, 2024 and will send the top 2 spellers from each class (4 total from each grade) to the schoolwide bee. To get started, you can download the app, Word Club, created by the Scripps National Spelling Bee, to help your students practice words. There is no real preparation for the spelling bee aside from practicing words every day!

Parent Technology Training. I will be hosting a parent technology training on Friday, December 1 at 8:30 in the MPR. This is an in-person training and you will need to bring your student’s home device with you so that you can log in as them to access the various tools that are available and learn to use them. This way, you can better support your student’s learning at home. Please RSVP in ParentSquare, so that we can make sure we have the appropriate information ready. Screencasts of the login process and access will be provided for parents who are not able to attend in person. We highly encourage you to attend!

Recaudación de fondos. El jueves enviamos a casa nuestra recaudación de fondos de invierno con Pacific Fundraising. Nuestras ventas comienzan desde ahora hasta el 30 de noviembre. Seremos los anfitriones del concurso de ortografía en toda la escuela el martes 30 de enero de 2024 a la 1:30 p. m. y nuestros 3 mejores alumnos serán enviados a la competencia del distrito el 28 de febrero de 2024. Dear Duff Community,

On this day before the long Veterans Day weekend, I would like to honor and thank all of the veterans who have defended our country. If you are a veteran in our community, please let me know (email: vsun@gesd.us) or directly in the ParentSquare comments. I would love to be able to recognize you and your service at our November awards assembly.

Parent Meetings. We had two successful meetings this week for our English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) and School Site Council (SSC). Our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) was shared and approved by SSC. Thank you to those who joined us online and in-person. Everyone is welcome to join us! With your votes, we will have a technology training on December 1, 2023 at 8:30 AM in the MPR. A flyer with all the information will be posted. We look forward to seeing you there!

PBIS Store. Thank you to PTO for replenishing our PBIS cart with goodies. Our student council members put together mystery bags for 10, 20, and 30 PBIS stamps. We’ve also got a new list of items in the store as big point items! The store will be open on Thursday, November 16 during lunch time.

Spirit Blanket Sale. The blanket presale was an absolute hit this week! Thank you to everyone who purchased! These are two limited designs: one with our school logo and the other with the baby dragon. You have until Friday, November 17th to place your pre-order! Be sure you get them before they’re sold out.

Holiday Performance. Save the date for Friday, December 22. Our second to fifth grade students will be performing with their VAPA and classroom teachers. We will also have our awards assembly prior to their show. We look forward to seeing you!

GEF Gala Performance. Our 20 second grade students had a fantastic performance at the GEF Gala last night. Congratulations to the three families who won raffle prizes!

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be empathic. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: showing an ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In a sentence: The empathic friend listened sincerely as Junie told her about the scary experience. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept! Our students have been great in using all of the words!

Thanksgiving Break. Our school will be closed November 20th-24th for Thanksgiving holiday. I hope you have something wonderful planned with your loved ones!

You make our school an incredible place. Thank you to our PTO for a wonderful Halloween Tent-or-Treat and for all the treats and goodies that you brought in to share with the students! November is a month of gratitude and thanksgiving. We’ll be reminding our students of all the goodness we have around us!

New Staff. We have two new staff members who joined us this week!

Ms. Zhao - Intern teacher and long-term substitute teacher for Ms. Tao.
Ms. Trejo - Noon duty aide who will complete our supervision team

If you see them, be sure to wave hello and give them a warm welcome!

ELAC Meeting. We have our second ELAC meeting on Tuesday at 8:30. This will be a hybrid meeting so that more people will be able to join us. We’ll be providing updates on ELPAC and other information regarding our English Learner population.

School Site Council (SSC) Meeting. We have our second SSC meeting on Wednesday from 2-4 PM where we will be welcoming in our new members and approving our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). Please vote for our parent representative candidate via Google Form. This is the forum to find out how allocated state funds are spent at our school. The meeting will be hybrid to accommodate everyone.

Garvey Education Foundation Gala Dinner. GEF’s celebratory dinner will be on Wednesday, starting at 5 PM. Twenty of our second grade students will be performing! We look forward to seeing families there!

DELAC Meeting. The district English Learner Advisory Committee will be meeting on Thursday, 9-11 AM at the Parent Education center. Join the meeting to find out about the district initiatives to help our students.

Spirit Blanket Sale. Now that the weather is getting colder, We’re starting a pre-sale for Duff throw blankets. There are two designs, one with our school logo and the other with the baby dragon. Pre-sale blankets are $25. When they arrive, it’ll be $30. Help support our PTO with the purchase of a blanket!

Save the Date. Friday, December 22 will be our K-5 holiday performance by our students with their VAPA and classroom teachers. We will also have our awards assembly. We look forward to seeing you!

Spicy Foods and Candy as Snacks at School. Duff promotes healthy food choices for our students. Please do not send spicy items with students to school, including hot cheetos, hot chips, spicy squid/tofu. These items will be confiscated and returned to the student at the end of the day. Please leave candy at home.

Safety at School.

Drop-off and Pick-up. Please be sure to follow all safety rules when dropping off and picking up students. Please be a good example and use the crosswalk to cross the street. Please do not double park or park in the red zone. Arrive early to avoid traffic or rushing!
Hands to Ourselves. Please remind students to keep their hands to themselves and to respect each person’s personal space or “bubble space”.
Kindness Matters. Please remind students to be considerate and use kind words and an inside voice when in inside spaces. Using “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” are always encouraged!

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be considerate. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: to be careful not to cause inconvenience or hurt to others. In a sentence: The considerate second grader made sure to include everyone in their games. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept! Our students have been great in using all of the words!

No School Friday. In honor of Veteran’s Day, school is not in session on Friday. Enjoy your 3-day weekend!

Dear Duff Community,

We had an exciting week with our Dragons representing their drug free and proud Red Ribbon Week! We’ll continue the spirit next week with silly socks on Monday and Halloween costumes on Tuesday.

PTO Volunteers Needed. We need your help to make the Halloween event a success. Please join the Duff PTO group in ParentSquare to get more information. Here is the help requested:

Volunteers needed in these areas:

Sorting the goodies (Monday and Tuesday morning)
Event setup (tables and canopies)
Theme tent decorating
Hand out goodies
Clean up

No time to volunteer? Consider donating these:

Tent decorations items in the following themes: Alien, General Halloween, Spiders, Pac Man
Goodies like: stickers, pencils, erasers, party favors, etc.
Cuties oranges (aka little pumpkins)

Halloween Day. Parents, please be sure that your students come in a comfortable costume. They will need to be able to move, sit, and use the restroom independently in their costumes. Students are welcome to bring a change of clothing for after the parade and costume contest.

Goodies: Students will be receiving goodies from the tent-or-treat. They will be asked to enjoy the treats at home.
Halloween Costume Contest: Three judges will be selecting students in the parade who have the best costumes in the following categories:

Most original
Most creative
Spookiest
Silliest

If your students do not celebrate Halloween, we will have a space for them to complete alternative work so that they can still be at school.

Coffee with the Principal. I will be hosting Coffee with the Principal on Monday at 8:30 AM. It will be a hybrid event so that parents can be in person and join us online. The link will be provided in a separate ParentSquare post. Mrs. Herrera will be sharing information about bullying and mental health awareness.

School Site Council Nomination. One of our School Site Council (SSC) parent members resigned. We need one parent to serve as a voting member. SSC members help make decisions for our school and participate in the development of our school plan. Your input is necessary and important. A notice has been sent home to all families. Please join us! Our next meeting is November 8 at 2 PM.

Mental Wellness Survey. Our 5th grade students will be completing the mental wellness survey on Tuesday, October 31 after the Halloween festivities. Students cannot participate in the survey unless we have your consent. We need 90% of all 4th-5th graders to participate in the survey. Please complete the parent consent here.

Leader in Me Monthly Focus. For the month of November, we’ll be focusing on Habit #3: Put first things first. This means staying organized and using our time efficiently so that we can prioritize the important things and also do the things we want! Here’s a song that helps the students understand this concept.

Woodcraft Rangers. It was a blast seeing our students dance on Wednesday for Lights On!. This Friday, November 3, all families are invited to A Day in the Life. Wear comfortable clothes and join a Woodcraft club experience led by your own students. The event starts at 4:30 PM. We look forward to seeing you!

Lion Dance. We are extremely lucky to have The Immortals Chinese Cultural Association lead lion dance classes on Thursday afternoons, 2:40-3:40 PM. Parents, if your students do not attend Woodcraft, please be to pick them up on time. Woodcraft students will check in with Woodcraft afterward their lesson with The Immortals. If you are interested in joining the learning experience, please complete this form.

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be curious. Part of speech: adjective. Definition: eager to know or learn something. In a sentence: The curious fourth graders diligently read the encyclopedia to find out the truth about mummies. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept! Our students have been great in using all of the words!

Dear Duff Community,

I missed everyone while I was at home recovering and it felt so good to be back on campus on Thursday! I am still catching up with everything and appreciate your patience.

Our community is beautiful and mighty helpful. We are looking for your assistance at the Halloween event. We’ve also got a few parent/community involvement events that we feel may be of great interest to you. Please join the Duff PTO group in Parent Square so that we know you can help!

UCLA Football Tickets. We still have 13 tickets available for the UCLA vs. Arizona game on Saturday, November 11. Use this link to get your tickets: bit.ly/DUFF2UCLA2023. First come, first served.

Red Ribbon Week. Next week is a nationally recognized week to celebrate and educate students to be drug-free. We will be holding spirit week from Monday to Halloween. Here’s the theme as suggested by our Student Council members:

Monday, 10/23/23, Stuffed Animal Day - Bring ONE of your favorite stuffed animal to school. Be sure to have your name on the stuffy to make sure it does not get lost during the day.
Tuesday, 10/24/23, Crazy Hair Day - Come to school with your hair as creatively crazy as you’d like!
Wednesday, 10/25/23, Wear Red or Pink Day - Observe Red Ribbon Week by wearing or stand for Breast Cancer Awareness by wearing pink.
Thursday, 10/26/23, Disney Day - Put on your favorite Disney item - shirt, head band, shorts, hat, all of the above! Anything Disney works as long as it’s following district dress code.
Friday, 10/27/23, Pajama Day - Roll out of bed and arrive at school in your pajamas!
Monday, 10/30/23, Silly Socks Day - Wear your most silly socks
Tuesday, 10/31/23, Costume Day - Come to school with your Halloween costume! Be sure to continue to follow the Garvey District

Earthquake Emergency Drill. We will practice a full earthquake drill on Tuesday at 9 AM. This will help our students and teachers understand the full process that we have in the case an emergency happens.

Woodcraft: Lights On! Woodcraft is hosting an event on Wednesday, 3-5 PM, at Garvey Intermediate School to showcase student work. They would love to have your attendance! Student work will also be displayed in front of our school on Thursday.

Awards Assembly. We have our monthly assembly on Friday. If your child is receiving an award, you will receive an email notification from me. We hope that you’ll be able to attend!

Halloween Festivities. We are in need of treats and snacks for the Halloween event. Please donate snacks, treats, and goodies to the front office so that everyone at school can receive something awesome! Please make sure to bring in nut-free snacks! Juice boxes are also greatly appreciated!

Pumpkin Carving Competition. Join in our annual pumpkin carving contest where you and your student carve the pumpkins at home and send us a picture of the final product. Please direct all pictures to Ms. Helina and Ms. Sandra by Friday, October 27. All pictures need to have the carved pumpkin AND the student!

Costumes. Students are allowed and encouraged to wear costumes to school on Halloween, Tuesday, October 31. Please be sure that students are able to move around easily with the costume and able to use the restroom on their own with the costume on. They are able to change their clothing to uniforms after the parade and festivities, too. All costumes should follow the district dress code with faces visible.

Coffee with the Principal. We’ll be meeting on Monday, October 30 at 8:30 to discuss anti-bullying and mental health awareness. Feel free to bring other questions and comments, too!

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be sincere, which means free from pretense or deceit; proceeding from genuine feelings. In a sentence: Duff students are usually respectful and sincere; they are honest, showing their true feelings even in difficult situations. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept!

Dear Duff Community,

I apologize for the delay in this week’s newsletter. I am recovering from being sick and hope to be back at school on Tuesday.

October is usually a long month for students and teachers as there are no national holidays. This is also a period when students are getting more comfortable with the routines of the school and feel some lines can be crossed. Let’s work together to make sure that all students are following the school rules as written in the Parent Handbook.

Here are some that need reinforcement:

All students should be in uniforms - white/red/light blue/navy polo shirt with khaki/navy/black bottoms. Navy/khaki rompers and Duff shirts are acceptable, too.
Send single serving size snacks for students. Save spicy foods for home only. Remind students to not share home-brought food with friends.
Leave toys at home so that they are not a distraction in class or have the opportunity to get lost or broken during the school day.

UCLA Football Tickets. We still have 19 tickets available for the UCLA vs. Arizona game on Saturday, November 11. Use this link to get your tickets: bit.ly/DUFF2UCLA2023. First come, first served.

Call Rosemead Community Safety Line. Many parents have addressed the issue of unhoused people in our school neighborhood. Please call: 626.569.2292 to let them know that you are concerned for the safety of your children when they are being dropped off at school. The more parents who call - and consistently call - the more likely they will have officers patrol the area in the morning before school starts.

Garvey Education Foundation Gala. You are cordially invited to attend the GEF Celebration Gala on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at 5 PM recognizing first responders in the area. Our second grade students will be performing along with Hillcrest and Dewey students to show off our language skills. Tickets are $70/person. All proceeds become teacher grants and student scholarships for Garvey School District. Please let the office know if you’d like to attend.

Mental Wellness Survey. Our 5th grade students will take their survey on October 30th and 4th grade students on November 13th. Please be sure that you have signed and returned the permission slip you received last week for your students to participate in a mental wellness survey. Your student’s participation in this survey helps us provide services to your students to ensure they are confident and happy.

Privacy Screen along Dog Park. The privacy screen along the dog park is up! We will be opening up the gate and letting students play in both areas starting Tuesday, after a review of the amended playground rules.

PTO Meeting Tuesday. Please join us in a hybrid PTO meeting on Tuesday at 8:30 AM. We’ll be in the MPR and also on Google Meet. A post will be made in Parent Square with the meeting link.

Word of the Week. This week’s focus word will be diligent, which means having or showing care and conscientiousness in one's work. In a sentence: I am diligent in writing Chinese words, by following the stroke sequence. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept!

7 Habits Focus. We are a 7 Habits school using the concept from the famous book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. The focus this month is Start with the End in Mind. This concept helps our students with goal setting, creating a vision for an accomplishment, and finding a path to get there. With the holidays around the corner, what are some goals that you and your students have before the end of the year? Let’s create a vision and plan a path toward it.

Student Council. Our student council members will be deciding the spirit days for Red Ribbon Week. I look forward to sharing their decision with all of you and hope all students will be able to join in the spirit!

Dear Duff Community,

THANK YOU so much for all of your support (and patience!) with our first ice cream truck fundraiser with DLMA PTO! It was definitely a crowd pleaser. PTO will update us at the next hybrid meeting - October 17 - regarding the funds we were able to raise with ConoLoco! The money raised will help support the field trips that students will attend this year.

Census Day - October 4. According to our enrollment count on Wednesday, Duff currently has 239 students. This will be the number of students that will be used for our funding calculations.

UCLA Football Tickets. We still have 42 tickets available for the UCLA vs. Arizona game on Saturday, November 11. Use this link to get your tickets: bit.ly/DUFF2UCLA2023. First come, first served.

Student Council. Fourth and fifth grade Student Council members were announced on Thursday. Congratulations to our inaugural group of student leaders who will contribute to Duff’s school decisions. Today, they came up with Student Council expectations and also made selections for the PBIS Rewards. Here’s to our next meeting!

Lockdown Drill. We will be completing a lockdown drill on Tuesday. Please reassure your students that this is only a drill.

Mental Wellness Survey. You should have received an active permission slip this week for your students to participate in a mental wellness survey later on this month. Your student’s participation in this survey is to help us provide services to your students to ensure they are confident and happy.

DELAC Meeting - Thursday. District English Learner Advisory Committee will be meeting on Thursday, 9-11 AM at the Parent Education Center. If your student is an English Learner, you are welcome to attend the district meeting.

Privacy Screen along Dog Park. I received an update from the facilities team that they will be installing the privacy screen along the dog park in the next two weeks. This will be great for student safety.

Uniforms. Upper grade families, please be sure that your students are in compliance with our uniform policy, with shorts that are past finger lengths and pants that are khaki, navy, or black. These are the students who need the most reminders to be in uniform.

Support Duff PTO. We have two PTO events happening right now:

Membership Drive: Please consider joining PTO as a member for you, your spouse, and your child(ren). Membership is $10/person. All the funds will go toward Duff students. The goal is to reach 100% participation from the Duff community. Let’s go!
T-shirt Sales: You may have seen Phannie, Beatriz, and Cindy outside tabling with t-shirts. We still have the red dragon available in all children and adult sizes and light blue baby dragon in children’s large, and all adult sizes. Each shirt is $15.
Next PTO meeting: Tuesday, October 17 @ 8:30 AM. It will be a hybrid meeting. Join us!

Word of the Week. We started Word of the Week this week with the word harmonious. Students used the word throughout the week. Next week, the word will be initiative, with the definition the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do. In an “I” statement: “I act and take charge before being told to do so”. Please encourage your student(s) to use this word and practice this concept!

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! I hope all of you have a great time surrounded by loved ones and enjoy the beautiful full moon. We had a lot of great celebrations this week with Friendship Week and our first Awards Assembly. Pictures were posted on ParentSquare for your viewing!

COME TO SCHOOL ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 4. This is *the* day where our official student count is held. Our official student count is used for our Title I and LCFF funding. Please make sure your child is at school and on time!

UCLA Football Tickets. The UCLA event was really popular last time, so we got 60 tickets to the UCLA vs. Arizona game on Saturday, November 11 seeing that it is a 3-day weekend and some families may be out of town. Use this link to get your tickets: bit.ly/DUFF2UCLA2023. First come, first served. If we have more than 60 requests, then I will ask for more.

Support Duff PTO. We have two PTO events happening right now:

Membership Drive: Please consider joining PTO as a member for you, your spouse, and your child(ren). Membership is $10/person. All the funds will go toward Duff students. The goal is to reach 100% participation from the Duff community. Let’s go!
T-shirt Sales: You may have seen Phannie, Beatriz, and Cindy outside tabling with t-shirts. We still have the red dragon available in all children and adult sizes and light blue baby dragon in children’s large, and all adult sizes. Each shirt is $15.
Next PTO meeting: Tuesday, October 17 @ 8:30 AM. It will be a hybrid meeting. Join us!

Teacher-Student-Parent Compact. We will be sending home our Title I Teacher-Student-Parent Compact next week. This is an agreement among teachers, students, and parents regarding the expectations at our school. Teachers will be reviewing it with their students. Please sign it and return it with your students.

Student Council. Fourth and fifth grade students have been submitting their applications to be a part of our inaugural Student Council. The application deadline is Monday and results will be announced on Thursday. Our first meeting will be on Friday during lunch.

Uniforms. We return to regular uniform wearing next week. Please be sure that your students are in compliance with our uniform policy, with shorts that are past finger lengths and pants that are khaki, navy, or black.

Dear Duff Community,

Duff Dragons continue to blow me away with their kindness and ingenuity. Our school has completed the district baseline diagnostic; you will be receiving information regarding your child’s progress in the next week via Secure Documents in ParentSquare.

Garvey Community Resources & Wellness Fair. Please join us tomorrow from 9 AM-12 PM at Garvey Intermediate School. There is a district competition to see which school has the highest attendance. Please be sure to complete the bottom of the flyer you received so that we get counted!

Friendship Week. September 25th-29th is a celebration of friendships, including a full week of spirit! Students are able to come to school dressed in spirit gear (not in uniform):

Monday, 9/25 - Baseball caps or hats - wear your favorite baseball cap or crazy hat to school, paired with your uniform.
Tuesday, 9/26 - Twin Day - find a person (or two) to match your outfit to be a twin or triplet!
Wednesday, 9/27 - Sports Day - come in your favorite sports team’s gear.
Thursday, 9/28 - College & Career Day - dress for the college you want to attend or represent the career you’d like to have.
Friday, 9/29 - Duff Gear & Moon Festival Day - dress in Duff gear or something that represents the moon/space/constellation!

At the Title I meeting, we reviewed our Teacher-Student-Parent Compact. Please review this document and let us know if you have any questions or concerns. This compact will be printed the week of October 2 and distributed for all participants to sign.

We have our first PTO meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 27 at 7:30 PM. The meeting will be virtual via Google Meet. Information will be posted again via ParentSquare with a direct link. Join us to learn how you can help raise funds for our students!

Lion Dance Opportunity. Is your child interested in learning about lion dancing? The Immortals Chinese Cultural Association will be offering free lessons on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30. The start date is to be determined. This class can only have 30 students. Please sign up for the Lion Dance class by using this link.

Student Financial Safety. Students from various grade levels have been selling items to each other on the playground before, during, and after school. Some of our students are carrying large sums of money in their pockets, wallets, or backpacks to purchase items. Selling and buying of non-school sanctioned items is not permitted at Duff. For the safety of all of our students, please check your students’ backpacks and talk to them about not selling and/or buying things at school from their peers.

Awards Assembly. We are excited to host in-person assemblies again! Two students from each class will be recognized on Thursday at the first Awards Assembly of the year. If your student was selected to receive an award, you will receive an email with your invitation. If possible, please keep the award reception a secret so that your child may be surprised.

Hoorah to a fantastic full week! Your students have been busy learning and completing their district diagnostic assessments this week via iReady. They also bid farewell to Ms. Berenice, one of our Noon Duty Assistants today. Ms. Berenice has been with Duff as a Woodcraft Rangers club leader and then became our Noon Duty Assistant last school year. We wish her all the best with her new profession in the medical field!

Morning Drop-off. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Ms. Cao, mother of Caden in 2nd grade, who is helping with the morning valet line.

Thank you, again, to all the families who are following the rules of the morning drop-off valet:

Pull all the way up to the front of the line
Stay in the driver’s seat
Keep backpacks with the student in the car, not in the trunk
Be patient when there are many cars in line

These rules and precautions are for the safety of your children:

Please do not release your child(ren) on the street.
Please do not make a U-turn on Dorothy Street.
Please do not double park or bypass a stopped vehicle.
Please do not park in the white drop-off zone.
Please do not park in the red zone.

Read Aloud with Dr. Sun. Today, September 15th, is International Dot Day, created after Peter H. Reynold’s inspirational book, The Dot. Here is a video (6m47s) of me reading the book to Duff students. Feel free to share the video with your student and access the resources I have listed to find out more about the book. I will be sharing one read aloud each month, rotating between English and Mandarin books. If you have book suggestions, please let me know!

Parent Engagement. We have two upcoming meetings this Wednesday, 9/20, and would love to have your participation. Join us at 2 PM for our first School Site Council meeting. We’ll need to vote in a few new members. Continue from 3-4 PM with our Title I meeting.

District Diagnostic Progress. Your students have been busy completing the district iReady diagnostic test in Reading and Math. Third and fourth grade students have reached 100% completion; second and fifth grade are at 98 and 97% completion. This assessment helps us know your student’s foundation and see their growth throughout the school year.

Intervention. Using the iReady progress and teacher recommendation, some students will be pulled out of class for intervention to support their learning with Ms. Asao. If your student will receive intervention, you will receive a letter on Monday. Small groups will begin next week.

Uniforms. All students should be in uniforms every day, unless otherwise stated. In our uniform check today, we are congratulating Ms. Diep’s homeroom class for having the highest percentage of students in full uniforms with a popsicle party on Monday. Please help us by making sure your students are in school uniforms each day. In observation of our students' clothing preferences, we have amended the uniform rule to include all black bottoms as a choice as well.

Friendship Week. September 25th-29th is a celebration of friendships, including a full week of spirit! Students are able to come to school dressed in spirit gear (not in uniform):

Monday, 9/25 - Baseball caps or hats - wear your favorite baseball cap or hat to school
Tuesday, 9/26 - Twin Day - find a person to match your outfit to be a twin (or triplet!)
Wednesday, 9/27 - Sports Day - come in your favorite sports team’s gear
Thursday, 9/28 - College Day - dress for the college you want to attend or represent
Friday, 9/29 - Duff Gear & Moon Festival Day - dress in Duff gear or for the moon/space/constellation!

Happy Friday! This was a short, but busy week. Thank you very much for those of you who were able to come to Back to School Night. We hope you had a great time learning Duff’s and your teacher’s classroom expectations.

Welcome! I’d like to welcome three new parents who are helping us with morning valet and afternoon pick up:

Mrs. Li, mother of Justin in 2nd grade
Mrs. He, mother of Kingsley in 2nd grade
Mr. Chou, father of Avia, in 1st grade

Please be kind, polite, and respectful to them as they provide a safe drop off and pick up environment for the Duff Community. Remember, use the crosswalk and do NOT make U-turns on Dorothy Street!

I have been in contact with the Temple City Sheriff’s Department regularly regarding the unhoused folks in the alley or on the sidewalk. They are aware of the issue and will be making their way out each morning to ask them to move.

Playground and new classrooms update. Our four new portable classrooms will arrive in January. It will be placed where it is fenced off right now. Up to now, I have not let the students play in the grassy area because the privacy shields have not been placed on the fence beside the dog park. Once that is placed, the grassy area will be opened again. Furthermore, GSD Grounds & Facility have been looking at replacing the basketball hoops. We will get them back soon!

Woodcraft Rangers. Woodcraft opened a new club today! We now have 170 students staying after school. Please be mindful that Woodcraft Rangers is funded by the government at no cost to you as a service. We encourage all families to stay until at least 4:45 PM so that Woodcraft can continue to be a free service for our community.

UCLA Football Tickets. I asked for more tickets and was informed that I will be granted 120 tickets instead of 60. Everyone who has signed up will be able to receive tickets next week. We still have 30 tickets available, if anyone would like to have them. Use this link: bit.ly/DUFF2UCLA2023. First come, first served.

English Arts and Spanish Arts & Culture. English Arts started today; our arts day is Friday. Spanish Arts and Culture will start next week! Be sure to ask your students about them!

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). Mrs. Herrera, our counselor, has started SEL classes with each grade level this week. She focused on bullying for the first lesson as it is an important issue to cover. Please talk to your children about the meaning of bullying and the actions that constitute as bullying. Parents, we will be addressing this issue at Coffee with the Principal on September 26.

Good evening, Duff Community! ¡Buenas noches, comunidad Duff! 晚上好，德福社區！

Welcome to Duff Language Magnet Academy’s 2023 Back to School Night. I am Dr. Sun and the proud principal of this school. If you are enjoying the dinner box from Ni Ni Bakery and boba from I Heart Boba, please give a round of applause to our PTO leaders: Phannie Wang and Cindy Au-Yeung. Tonight is our first fundraising event of the school year and we are off to a great start!

We are happy to host all of you tonight so that you can learn about your child’s teachers’ classroom expectations and also learn about Duff Language Magnet Academy’s expectations as a school. Before I let you visit your students’ classrooms, here are a few things I would like to share:

ParentSquare. This is Garvey School District and Duff’s main source of communication. Be sure you have access by scanning the QR code on the poster.
Morning valet and student pick up. For the safety of all of our students, please do not double park, cut off another car, or let your students out on the left side of the vehicle. If you are part of the valet line, we will open the door for your child. At pick up, please make sure that you are properly parked to pick up your student. Teachers will not release students whose parents are out waving their students over. We want everyone, especially our students to be safe.
Attendance. We want to see everyone at school, every day. This is how we receive funding as a public school. That said, if your child has a fever, has been vomiting, or has diarrhea, please keep your child at home. To reiterate, here are the three reasons to keep your child at home: fever, vomit, or diarrhea. Thank you for your cooperation.
Uniforms. All students should be in uniform, every day, unless otherwise stated or other arrangements have been made. Uniform tops are: yellow, white, red, light blue, navy shirts with collars, or school shirts. Uniform bottoms are: navy or khaki pants, shorts, skirts, dresses, rompers. Dark blue jeans are acceptable, too. We will have spirit weeks each month where students will have the opportunity to not be in uniform.
Parent involvement. We need your help to make Duff the best and safest school.

PTO: Please become a member. In fact, everyone in your family can become a member: mom, dad, students, uncle, aunt, grandmother, grandfather, etc. Your membership of $10/person helps fund school buses for field trips and supplies for the classrooms. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 27 at 5 PM.
Official Meetings: Title I meeting, School Site Council, English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC). Your attendance at these meetings will be vital to the development of our school.

Student leadership. We will be starting an Associated Student Body (ASB) Student Council this year for 4th and 5th graders. More information will be coming for your upper grade students.
Duff Yearbook. This will be a great memory keepsake for our students and school community. We would love to have a parent lead this adventure.

Now, it is time to visit all of our classrooms. Kindergarten to 4th Grade, you will all go to the same grade level classroom. 5th Grade parents, please go to your child’s homeroom first.

Dear Duff Families,

Woohoo! We completed Day 7 of our school year and finished an entire week of school. Your students continue to impress me with their positive attitude and respectful behavior.

Thank you very much to the parents who follow the rules at the drop-off valet in the morning. Please remember to always pull all the way up to the front when there is space, stay in your vehicle, and have your student’s backpack with them in their seat. For the safety of all students, please do not double park or make a U-turn anywhere on Dorothy Street. For parents walking students to campus, be sure to set a good example for your children by using the crosswalks.

Starting Wednesday, we will be enforcing our school uniform policy. All students are required to be in uniforms. Parents will be contacted to bring an extra set of clothing when students are not in uniform. School uniforms promote school safety, improve discipline, and create a strong sense of identity and school pride among students. Thank you for supporting our efforts to ensure a positive learning environment for children. We will have spirit days each month when students will have free dress days, such as the last week of September for Friendship Week. More information will be provided. Duff t-shirts will be available for pre-order at Back to School Night.

Help make Duff the best school ever! Parent volunteers are needed for the following:

Dear Duff Families,

We have a special Tuesday Weekly message due to the awesomeness and timely items that need to be addressed.

Friday, September 1 is the due date to request an at-home laptop. All students should have brought home a notification on Monday. Please turn it in by Friday so that we can provide you a device. Please also only request a device if your student does not have access to another device at home.
Tuesday, September 5 is Picture Day. This is a free dress day. Please continue to follow the district dress code for students. The policy prohibits overly baggy clothing, clothing associated with gangs, and clothing with inappropriate graphics or slogans. Shorts must be below fingertip length. Spaghetti strapped tops, crop and tube tops, visible underwear, and sandals are prohibited.
Wednesday, September 6 is Back to School Night from 5:30-7:00 PM. We have a dinner fundraiser from Ni Ni Bakery. Pre-order your dinner by using this form. Dinners are $11 each with the pre-order. At the door, they will be $13 or $25 for two. Boba will be sold by I Heart Boba.

Saturday, September 16 is a special I Go to College Day with UCLA at the Rose Bowl. We have 60 free tickets for Duff Community. Claim your tickets here. First come, first served. We will let you know if you will have tickets. These tickets are not for resale. Please only reserve for your own family needs.

Lastly, if you would like to volunteer at Duff, as a crossing guard, morning valet, or other roles, please review the Volunteer Handbook and complete the necessary forms attached. Your assistance to our community is greatly appreciated!

Dear Duff Families,

YAY! We made it through the first week of school! There were still some tears this morning, but the students all had a great day. I enjoyed seeing all of you at the morning drop-off. Starting Monday, please stay at the gate and let your students walk in on their own. We have 5th grade volunteers who will be walking kindergarteners to the kindergarten playground. Parents using the drive thru valet, please follow the drop-off instructions for the safety of our Duff community.

Today, we reviewed our Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) Rules to ensure all of our students know the school expectations. Please review the matrix with your child(ren) and if so desired, co-create a matrix for your own home for Respect, Integrity, Safety, and Excellence.

I hope all of you have a wonderful, restful weekend. Remember to build a nightly routine so that your students can have a full 8-9 hours of sleep each night, to be ready and attentive at school. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces on Monday, before 8:15 AM!

Dear Duff Families,

What a joy it was this morning to meet you all this morning, including future Duff students! Thank you to those who introduced yourselves. I sincerely look forward to learning all of your names. Everyone had a fantastic time on their first day of school meeting their homeroom and partner teachers. I was not able to take many first day pictures and hope that you can share some pictures with us in this Google Photo Album.

Awesome Fact: We made Duff history today. For the first time in 6 years, every single student was on time. Thank you for being a part of this historic moment! I hope that we’ll be able to continue this trend.

You are welcome to use the valet line to drop off students starting tomorrow. Here is the process:

Obey the crossing guards and be kind to volunteers.
Drive all the way forward when dropping off your child.
Say your goodbyes early. Keep children seated and buckled in until you come to a complete stop.
Students should be ready to exit the car when the car stops. Backpacks should be with students, not in the trunk.
Students exit vehicles in the designated area only.
Do not exit your car to accompany your child to the gate.

Please be respectful and considerate

No parking in the student drop off area 7:00-9:00 AM.
If your child needs assistance getting out of the car, including being unbuckled, park at Garvey Park and walk your child to the gate.
Respect our neighbors; do not use their driveways.
Yield to pedestrians.

Be a good example, always use the crosswalk.
Obey all traffic laws: NO U-turns, NO Double parking. This puts our children’s lives at risk.

Please have your child in school by 8:15 AM. Students are to be in line by 8:15 AM. Arrive early to avoid traffic.

The West gate opens at 7:45 AM for all students. Breakfast is served from 7:45 to 8:05 AM.

We are absolutely thrilled to welcome you to school tomorrow!

Please be sure to arrive at school on time.

7:45 AM - West Gate opens; Cafeteria Breakfast service starts
8:15 AM - Bell rings; Students line up
8:20 AM - Instruction starts; Parents join me on the playground for a meet & greet

Please arrive a little bit early as parking may be a little bit difficult due to the first day of school excitement.

Kindergarten Parents: You will be able to walk your students to the back of the cafeteria for breakfast. Please say goodbye outside of the cafeteria. Ms. Tao and Ms. Maan will be there to greet you!
First to Fifth Grade Parents: You will be able to walk your students on campus. Please stay on the playground/blacktop when the bell rings.

We will gather together on the playground at 8:20 so that we may share a light refreshment and I may officially introduce myself to you in person.

Please review the Duff Family Handbook regarding this school year. The Spanish and Mandarin versions will be available soon!

Pick up: The school day ends at 2:30 for Kindergarten and 2:35 for First to Fifth Grade. For students going home, please meet your students at the respective dismissal areas.

Kindergarten: West Gate (by the office)
First-Second Grade: MPR (building door)
Third-Fifth Grade: East Gate (by the mural)

Woodcraft Rangers: Ms. Santana continues to be our coordinator. If you applied before July 28, you should have received a phone call regarding your child’s acceptance into the after school program. Woodcraft runs from 2:30 to 6:00 PM. Please be sure you pick up your child between 5:45 and 6:00 PM.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! I am so excited to share this journey with you and your child(ren) as the new principal of Duff Language Magnet Academy. Growing up in a bilingual household, developing professional skills as an educator since 2005, and a dual-language immersion (DLI) practitioner since 2012, I am proud to lead Duff Dragons toward great success. I look forward to learning more about our students and your families. We are going to have a fantastic year ahead!

Kindergarten parents: We have a kindergarten orientation next Wednesday, August 23, 4:00-5:00 PM. Please join us if you are able so that you can meet our incredible teachers, Ms. Tao (Mandarin) and Ms. Maan (English). This will also help your students feel better about the first day of school.

All parents: After taking your first day of school pictures and dropping your students off at the line at 8:15 AM, please join me in the Multipurpose Room (MPR) at 8:20 for a brief welcome and introduction to the new school year. You'll also be introduced to our two fearless PTO leaders.

To have a successful first day of school, please be sure that your students have the following:

Appropriate clothing as designated by the Duff Uniform & Dress Code
A backpack (other necessary school supplies will be provided by Duff)
A snack for school (Woodcraft Rangers will provide snacks for your students)
A reusable and refillable bottle of water
A lunch, unless your student is eating at the cafeteria

I will be sharing this weekly letter with you every Friday via Parent Square. The same message is also available on the school website. This newsletter will provide important events and information to help you prepare for the following week. I will share more information with you throughout the school year.
