Dear Fourth Grade Families,

We have been working on getting to know each other and on classroom routines. Our schedule is starting to run more smoothly and students are working on being organized and prepared. You will not see much homework this year other than math that needs to be finished at home. I have asked that students try to read 20 minutes several times a week at home. There is no formal reading homework but I hope there will be some time set aside to enjoy reading without the pressure of fitting it in or keeping a record. Students have time set aside during our Reading Workshop to read and respond to their reading as well as hear books read aloud and participate in reading groups.  Please continue to look at your child’s red folder for graded papers and important papers from school. We have completed the district NWEA/MAP testing for Math and Reading. They will take this district assessment 3 times- fall, winter and spring.

Have a great weekend! Go Jackets!

Reading: Students continue to work on finding “Just Right” books from our classroom library, school library, or on Epic Reading. They are working on reading independently for longer amounts of time which we refer to as “reading stamina”. We will be focusing on being active readers who ask good questions and look for evidence in our reading, both with the hopes of enjoying reading. This year our class will read from “Storyworks”. It’s the 4th grade version of Scholastic News. Each month they get a new magazine filled with all types of reading. There will always be a play, a nonfiction article, a fiction story, a poem, and much more.

Writing:  Students have been doing some quick writes on topics in their Writer’s Notebooks. They have started a letter to me to introduce themselves and help me get to know them in and out of school. Just like reading, students are working to build their writing stamina so they don’t get tired hands while writing. Our focus for the year will be opinion/persuasive writing and informational writing.

Math:  We have started Module 1 in math. This module will include understanding place value, rounding numbers, adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers, and solving word problems. Along with our math lesson, students will work in Reflex Math to impr-ove their fact fluency and Zearn math, which will help reinforce the daily math lessons. Extra practice with math facts at home would be great! Look for math HW Monday- Thursday most weeks.

Social Studies/Science: We are beginning the study of Earth's Land. Students will learn about the processes of weathering, erosion, and deposition. Our first unit in Social Studies will be Ohio Geography.
