Relationships and Sex Education Policy - Compliance

Relationships and Sex Education Policy*

This policy is applicable to all pupils in the School
(including those in an EYFS setting where appropriate).
*Sex Education applies to Senior School

Relationships and Sex Education enables discussions about family and friendships, human relationships, sexual reproduction, health risks and responsibilities in a social and moral context. The School understands, and is sensitive to, the sometimes controversial and delicate issues that the subjects of Relationships and Sex Education can raise and will have regard to any legislation which impacts on its provision.

The aims of Relationships and Sex Education at Cheadle Hulme School are  to:

provide pupils with the skills and information to form strong, positive and healthy relationships with others;

prepare pupils with the personal attributes for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life; and to

promote physical, mental and social well-being.

Educational Approach
Relationships Education in the Junior School will be incorporated into the Learning for Life (L4L) programme and be supported in Form Times and Assemblies. The topics covered include: Families and Caring Friendships, Respectful Relationships and Being Safe (in all contexts, including online).

Relationships and Sex Education, and related topics in the Senior School, will be incorporated into different parts of the curriculum, including The Waconian Programme lessons, Science, Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies, Geography, and assemblies and form times according to the age of pupils. Lessons will be delivered by members of the teaching staff or other suitably qualified staff.

The School accepts that parents/carers have the right to withdraw pupils from Sex Education lessons up until three terms before their sixteenth birthday (unless lessons are part of the National Curriculum for Science). Parents/carers wishing to withdraw their child should put the request in writing to the Head. Three terms before the pupil’s sixteenth birthday the pupil has the right to decide whether they participate in these lessons.

At every stage in the School, the subject will be taught within a social and moral framework that recognises the value of the family unit, which can take a number of forms, and respects the rights of religious and ethnic groups.

Staff will ensure that teaching of these issues:

  • is objective with honest consideration of all points of view;
  • is approached in a sensitive and appropriate way;
  • emphasises, in an age appropriate manner, the importance of consent;
  • explores, in an age appropriate manner, what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like;
  • encourages pupils to respect the feelings and views of other people;
  • creates an awareness of the importance of personal and family relationships;
  • avoids giving individuals personal advice on sexual matters (although signposting where to seek appropriate help and guidance in these matters is acceptable);
  • uses methods which avoid staff taking a dogmatic stance or strongly advocating a personal point of view which can be counterproductive and inhibitory to the development of good decision-making skills in pupils.
