IES JOAN FUSTER, SOLLANA
In this magazine done by our students of 3rd course, you will find information concerning our college and some news of what we do, please have a look!!
Our college has been open since 2003 and was named after Joan Fuster, a Valencian writer who used to write in the Valencian language, and became a leading figure of Valencian nationalism.
He wrote many books, most of them of high interest, and especially essays, although he also wrote some opinion and grammar books. All this material can be found in the museum placed in his birth home, in the village of Sueca, which is just 10 km from our college and which surely deserves a visit.
INFORMATION
In our college, most students attend their classes from 9 am to 3 pm, but 3rd and 4th courses start at 8 am twice a week.
The centre accounts for 167 students and around 30 teachers. In the course 2019-2020 the college decided to promote reading by having a reading class of thirty minutes per day. In order to do so, the rest of classes last 50 minutes, instead of 55 minutes, and students have 30 minutes in which they can read their own books, lent from college or brought by themselves or read a common book in the class.
CLASSES
The college has two computer rooms, named Ada Byron and Alan Turing, and a very big gym where students can play Valencian traditional sports.
These include galotxa, pilota valenciana, escala i corda or raspall, or other well-known sports, like table tennis, badminton, etc. Outside in the patio, students can play with the Frisbee, lawn bowling and other outdoor sports, as well as basket, football or handball.
SUBJECTS
Apart from core subjects, in the latter years, students can choose optative subjects, these being: economy, Latin language, arts, music, French, technology, ICT and classic culture.
FURTHER STUDIES
After the 4 years of compulsory secondary education, our students cannot study for longer in this college. Those interested in further studies, which can be either preparing for university entrance or vocational studies, must go to the section of our school in Sueca, 10 km from our town, which is connected to our village by train.
EPHEMERIS ALONG THE YEAR
All along the year, we commemorate different dates in which we remember some past events in which injustices were committed. These need to be remembered in order not to be repeated. Our students do activities in some of these dates, either reading interesting books focusing on these events or decorating the college on special dates as these ones below, which represent some of the ephemeris along the year.
JANUARY 30th Peace day
The death of Mahatma Gandhi, who organized non-violent resistance against English colonialism, is commemorated on this date.
He was capable of mobilising millions of Indians with his movement.
MARCH 8th Women's day

The anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre is commemorated. On this date in 1960, dozens of peaceful protesters against the law were killed at the hands of South African police forces.

THE LIBRARY
In our college there is a library, which is used for two things. One of these is to do homework or study before having an exam.
This course, 2020/2021, because of the covid the library is being used as a normal classroom, since classes have fewer students, these being apart from each other at least 1.5 metres.
The library contains many books on different topics as well as magazines, which are made by our students. This one you are reading is the first one done by students of English in this language, but students have been doing for several years and normally at the end of the course a magazine called “El Motoret”.
THE COMPUTER ROOMS
As we mentioned before, our college has different computer classrooms, equipped with desktops for each student.
These rooms are used to study the technology subject as well as for other classes in which work by computer is required.
Apart from this, students can go to these classrooms anytime, as long as they are not being occupied by others and if they have asked the teachers to do so previously.
THE VEGETABLE GARDEN
This year the fourth-year students have been preparing an activity that consists of planting a few vegetable plants in the garden of the patio.
This activity has been carried out together with some teachers, not only from science subjects but also others like geography teacher who´s been helping in the project.
From the English department we made a video showing the garden and its plants, all explained in English.
The plants include both vegetables and fruits, such as:
Garlic Onions Strawberries Cauliflower Beans
Lettuce Pepper Potatoes Endives Parsley

The Albufera Natural Park is a Spanish protected natural area located in the province of Valencia, Valencian Community. It was also known by the Romans as Nacarum Stagnum and in some Arabic poems it is called Mirror of the Sun.
This place was declared a natural park by the Generalitat Valenciana on July 8th 1986; it is located about 10 km south of the city of Valencia. It includes the Albufera, its humid environment and the coastal cord adjacent to both.
The Albufera is surrounded by fields of rice. Our college is right next to one of its borders.
On October 23rd, 1990, the document for the Special Plan for the Protection of the Natural Park and Decree 96/1995, of May 16th approved the Natural Resources Management Plan of the Albufera Hydrographical Basin.

Please, if you ever go to Valencia, taste our internationally well-known paella with rice that is grown in this area and don´t forget to visit the Albufera, and have a small boat ride driven by one of the locals, you won´t forget it! ;)
COLLEGE NEWS
At the beginning of the current year, course 2020-2021, we were locked down because in Sollana there were many cases of Covid 19, At first the perimeter confinement was until January 2021 but as the cases did not go down, they extended the lockdown to 30.
Last 27th October 2020, a boy from Bilbao, Mikel, uploaded a video on TikTok, telling that he decided that day to go to school wearing a skirt "because I felt like it", in his own words.
The problem was that one of his teachers told him to leave the classroom, and sent him to the school counsellor.
His video went viral and in many colleges and schools all around Spain boys decided to go one day wearing a skirt as a response.
Our college could not miss this opportunity, since we are open-minded and always step towards freedom. So, students from 3rd course decided to announce to all students class by class that those who would like to join the initiative could wear a skirt on the 4th of December to make it visible that boys can also wear a skirt if they want to. You can read more information on this issue on many online newspapers, we leave a link for you.
