Brief details of the aims, content and outcomes of the activity | Aims The broad aims of the project are: 1. Students would increase understanding and acceptance, challenge stereotypes 2. Students will reduce the negative attitudes and misconceptions that surround autism 3. They would be able identify autism signs and symptoms early enough. 4. Individuals with autism would be empowered by giving them a voice and promoting self-advocacy. | |||
Activities: 1. Students carried out research about acceptance, challenge stereotypes and negative misconception about autism. 2. Students shared their findings with the school community to sensitize them. 3. Students of Dansol and partner school (Empower Int’l Academy, Uganda) exchanged issues surrounding autism in their respective countries via zoom meeting. 4. Students visited an autistic school, Patrick Speech and Language Centre, to conduct interviews so as to learn more about autism. 5. Students, at a general assembly, empower individuals with autism, giving them a voice and promoted self-advocacy | ||||
Outcome: 1. Students increased their understanding and acceptance of autism. 2. Student reduced the negative attitudes and misconceptions that surround autism; 3. Students identified the gaps and barriers that individuals with autism face in accessing necessary services and supports 4. Students with autism are empowered individuals by giving them a voice, and promoting self-advocacy. | ||||

‘Autism’: the description states that “students will share their findings with the school community and the partner school”. However, Silas isn’t mentioned earlier in the description. As it is written at this moment, I cannot see the global picture in this activity. It might be useful for students to research the topic in some other countries for a wider perspective. | ||||
ACTION TAKEN ON ASSESSOR’S RECOMMENDATION There were restraints concerning Autism in Silas International School, as explained by the principal. This led to collaborating with Empower International Academy in Uganda, to bring global dimension into the activity. | ||||
