CFP: Shaking the Foundations The Montreal Comic Arts Festival (MCAF) and the McGill Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Montreal (CIRM) invite proposals for the Shaking the Foundations Conference, which will be held in Montreal, from October 28 to 30, 2021. In addition to highlighting the MCAF’s 10th anniversary, this conference will bring together researchers interested in the comic arts and urban representations, as well as their creators for discussions and presentations of research and field work. Mario Beaulac, professor in comic arts at the École multidisciplinaire de l’image at Université du Québec en Outaouais, will oversee the event as scientific director. Deadline for submission: April 2 2021. (see poster) Indigenous students: Apply for SAGE Award by March 1 Supporting Aboriginal Graduate Enhancement (SAGE) Award assists Indigenous students pursuing graduate studies with up to $30K in funding (current award competition is for funding for this current year, 2020-2021) Dimensions Pilot Program - please participate Grad students represent a crucial demographic in our Scholarly-Research-Creative (SRC) cultures and systems in post-secondary education in Canada. Without your input into what barriers (as well as best experiences) you’ve encountered, we cannot build a better, more equitable system for the future. This survey is one tool we are using in the Pilot at Ryerson to gather grad student feedback. Black in Motion Series (Black History Month February 2021) A special collaboration between Ryerson's the SMACT, FCAD and The Catalyst at FCAD brings us the Black in Motion virtual Speaker Series. The Studio for Media Activism and Critical Thought (SMACT) is thrilled to be collaborating with Ryerson's own Faculty of Communication and Design (FCAD) and The Catalyst at FCAD research space to bring a special virtual speaker series in celebration of Black History Month this year. Spread out over two nights, the speaker series entitled, Black in Motion, will seek to explore and honour two distinct areas in which Black media activists are currently exercising dynamic practices of resistance. First, on February 23rd at 7pm, join us for Black in Motion: Race, Accessibility and Online Learning, an event that will bring together academics, artists and students for a panel discussion about online learning at the intersection of disability, accessible learning and race. Following the panel discussion, this event will create opportunities for students to share insights from their own learning experiences in order to contribute to a document of best practices for teaching and learning in the pandemic and beyond. Then, on February 26th at 4pm, Black in Motion: Behind the Camera, an event that will celebrate, recognize and showcase Black women in the film and television industry. Shonna Foster and Ayat Salih are women who will be speaking about an industry that has not been historically representative or welcoming to Black voices and stories. This conversation looks at the past, present and future of the film and television industry. Hosted by SMACT Co-Director, Cheryl Thompson! Pandemic in an Aging World: February 25 The MLC Research Centre is thrilled to invite you to the fourteenth installment of our webinar series, “Pandemic in an Aging World,” taking place on Thursday, February 25, 4-5 PM EST.
