Level 1 Horsemanship

Youth students who are new to riding lessons and students in their early stages of riding independently will build a solid foundation on and off the horse, with half of the time spent in a riding lesson and half of the time in an on-ground horsemanship lesson. Sessions focus on learning how to independently control horses at the walk, trot in balance, and learn basics about care-taking, tacking up, and on-ground control. The riding portion includes a high instructor-to-student ratio to help ensure safety and to help new riders advance.

Students will advance their Level 1 and 2 Riding and Horsemanship skills while spending half of the time in a small-group riding lesson and half in a horsemanship lesson.  In order to qualify for Level 1 / 2, students must be fully independent at the walk on at least three horses.  The primary focus of the riding portion is independent control through obstacles at the walk and trotting independently on different lesson horses, in all three positions at various speeds on the rail. The horsemanship portion focuses on understanding instincts, independent handling skills and being able to fully take care of a horse at a basic level.

Level 2 / 3 integrates more intermediate riding and horsemanship with the lesson time equally split between mounted and unmounted lessons.  Students will work on form and technique with more English riding and trotting figures, and those who meet Level 3 requirements will begin loping.  The horsemanship portion focuses on more advanced care-taking, beginning health / wellness, intermediate handling skills and independent tacking.

Level 3 / 4 focuses on lateral movements, advancing patterns and establishing more control at the lope as students work toward improved control and expanding the number of horses they can maneuver through all three gaits.  Beginning jumping skills will be introduced for students who meet Level 4 requirements. Un-mounted time is spent improving on-ground control and on more advanced health / wellness topics.

Private lessons are booked according to instructor, horse and arena availability.  We typically wait until after group lesson registration as group sizes affect this availability.  Potential times are listed here and can be confirmed two weeks after registration opens.  If you’re hoping for private lessons, please give us a few times that could work from the listed times.

                                                                                                                                                                      This 45-min group for kids ages 4-8 helps ensure those first horse experiences are safe and positive!  It teaches early riding and handling skills as well as providing good, safe, horsey fun.  Kids spend 25-30 minutes riding and 15-20 minutes doing hands-on, unmounted horsemanship activities.

The Saturday morning group is intended for adult riders working at a Level 2 or 3 (see above).  Lessons consist of approximately 80% riding and 20% horsemanship.  Beginning adults may put a request in for a group placement or begin with private lessons.

Our Therapeutic Riding class is for students whose goals meet at least one of the following:

  • Improving balance, flexibility, coordination
  • Reducing stress and anxiety
  • Enhance life by connecting with a horse, riding in a social group and taking pride in having a sport

 

Our therapeutic riding classes offer one-on-one instruction while integrating students socially in a group riding environment.  We cater each students’ lesson plans specifically to their unique needs.  Please note that an intake form and goal assessment is required.

Youth Leadership – Level 1

Level 1 Youth Leadership emphasizes life skill development while developing a basic level of Horsemanship.  Students start by mastering eight basic skills in each Horse Care and Ground Control, then move on to eight basic skills in each Health / Wellness and Riding.  Therapeutic Horsemanship practices and equine-assisted learning activities are built into the curriculum to help reinforce life skill development.

Youth Leadership – Level 2

In Level 2 Youth Leadership, students work toward becoming Youth Horse Care Volunteers.  The class is an intensive training on horsemanship and stable management, and encompasses goals in responsibility, time-management, accountability and communication to help students grow into Youth Leaders.  As students’ progress through Level 2, they take on a weekly volunteer assignment.  

      

Students start the class at Tier 1 tuition.  If the student qualifies for a weekly volunteer assignment and can successfully execute their responsibilities, tuition is reduced to the Tier 2 rate after a one-month trial period.

In Youth Leadership Level 3, students take their volunteer work to the next level by apprenticing Little Wrangler Lessons and training to become Junior Instructors.  Each class begins with 30 minutes of instruction, then students assist with Little Wrangler Lessons while receiving instruction on how to work with their student, then closes with 15 minutes of review.  If students continue their weekly volunteer assignment from Level 2, they continue to receive Tier 2 tuition.
