Competition digital
General information
Competitions are a special form of branded content that is focussed on generating leads for the advertiser in the form of participants. The text length for a competition should not exceed 1500 characters (recommended guideline).
Otherwise, the Sponsored Digital specs apply.
Competition mechanics
There are various ways to integrate the competition, depending on the customer's wishes and objectives:

Readers send in their own content (text, image, video).
Winners are drawn or determined by the client.
The client determines which personal data is required for participation. Recommendation CP: The lower the effort or hurdle for the reader, the higher the participation.
Spotlight

Story:
- Only content of high journalistic quality that offers added value to the reader is permitted. Decision in case of doubt by CP management.
- Only content created by CP is permitted. CP management decides on exceptions.
- CP proposes the storyline/structure/focus of the respective article based on the briefing and any information material provided. The CP has the power of ultimate decision regarding the content.
- The lead time is at least 5 working days (exclusive: video & production).
- Spotlight placement is only available in DE and FR.

Teaser guidelines
- Â Discounts in teasers
Special offers, discount campaigns and other assertions pointing out potential financial savings are not permitted due to editorial requirements.
Exceptions: Promotions for Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Valentine’s Day (or other special occasions by arrangement). Decisions on exceptions and their implementation are made by the Commercial Publishing.
- Replacement/special characters, abbreviations in teasers
Due to internal style guidelines, we avoid using replacement and special characters (→ %, &, etc., CHF etc.) in the teasers where possible. Exceptions are decided by Commercial Publishing.
- Gendering
Editorial guidelines prohibit the use of gender-neutral asterisks in teasers. We use neutral forms (students) or the generic masculine (students).
In the running text, we use the neutral form (students) or binary form (female and male students).
- Colon in the title
Due to internal style guidelines, we avoid using colons in teasers as much as possible. Rare exceptions are decided by the Commercial Publishing.
- Customer and brand names in the teaser, spellings of brand names
Due to editorial guidelines, mentioning customer and brand names in the teaser is not allowed. Very rare exceptions are decided by the Creative Leadership CP (e.g., '50 Years of Ikea Switzerland').
Proprietary spellings of customer and brand names that deviate from orthographic norms are adjusted in both the teaser and the running text. We refrain from using corporate lowercase (adidas → Adidas), all caps (IKEA → Ikea), internal capitalization (BahnCard → Bahncard), or incorrect hyphenations (STIEBEL ELTRON WÄRMEPUMPEN → Stiebel-Eltron-Wärmepumpen). Rare exceptions (e.g., iPhone) are decided by the Commercial Publishing.
- Addressing the readership and the use of 'we'
Due to legal requirements and the potential risk of confusion between purely editorial and promotional articles, commercial texts must generally be written from a person-neutral perspective (→ 'Customer XYZ is offering a new product'), and the use of 'we' is not permitted. Additionally, the readership of 20 Minuten is generally addressed in the informal 'you' form (→ 'Order your free sample from Customer XYZ now').
In rare exceptions and after prior consultation with the Commercial Publishing, the use of 'we' is permitted. The following conditions must be met:
→ Declaration 'This text was created by XYZ'
→ A textual introduction in the style of «We at XYZ are telling you today why our product is so great.»
Teaser-Image:
- Customer names, logos, and products in image
Pure product photos and isolated logos are not allowed in teasers due to editorial guidelines. Photos that show logos or products in an appropriate context (e.g. the use of the product in an everyday situation) are permitted after consultation with the Commercial Publishing.
- Text in images
Graphical/textual elements overlaid on an image are not permitted due to editorial guidelines. Photos that display text in a context, such as unobtrusive script logos on a product in the background, are allowed.
- Collages as teaser images
Generally, collages or composite images (e.g., before-and-after comparisons) are not permitted due to editorial guidelines. In individual cases, exceptions may be made for high-quality imagery after consultation with the Commercial Publishing.
- Black-and-white photos or illustrations in the teaser
Due to internal style guidelines, we avoid using black-and-white photos or illustrations in the teasers as much as possible. Exceptions are decided by the Commercial Publishing.
- Delivery of image material for teasers
Typically, each teaser image (multiple desired) generates four different image formats. All four formats are cropped from a single image. Therefore, it is crucial that the image has the following characteristics:
→ The image must be delivered in landscape format and must function as a whole in that format.
→ The 'main object' should be in the center of the image and have enough space on all sides so that a crop of it can also be used in portrait format.
→ The images must have a minimum width of 2000 px.
