Geering Up Instructor (Workshop and Camp Season, May-August) - Job Description

Description of Organization

Geering Up UBC Engineering & Science for Kids is a non-profit, student-run organization, dedicated to promoting science, engineering, and technology to the children and youth of British Columbia through fun, innovative, and hands-on experiments and projects. Job Summary

General Instructors are our front line workers, working the entire summer (May-August) leading in-school workshops and summer camps.

Under the guidance of the Directors, Instructors are required to:

  1. Act as an Instructor and role model at workshops, camps, and events
  2. Following safety and risk management policies and ensuring every student is safe and having fun
  3. Train, supervise, and provide guidance to volunteer personnel
  4. Complete all evaluations and reports in a timely manner
  5. Assist in prep tasks at the end of each day
  6. Instructors working May-August may be asked to travel throughout British Columbia to deliver workshops and camps for at least one week of the summer. Travel and lodging costs will be covered
  7. Perform other duties, as requested by the Directors

Qualifications

  1. UBC undergraduate student with a strong background in science, engineering, or technology
  2. Strong experience working with children in a teaching environment
  3. Proven leadership skills and exceptional teamwork abilities
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  5. Planning, organizational, multi-tasking, and self-directed work skills
  6. Proven ability to create and implement working projects and models of scientific concepts
  7. Special consideration given to those with formal training in special education and/or disability theory, those who have worked in a summer camp environment in the past, and those with current Standard First Aid certification.
  8. All Geering Up Staff must have a Criminal Record Check on file before they may work with children.

Organization Status

Instructors report to the Directors and Program Manager. Instructors work in cooperation with other Instructors and provide leadership and mentorship to Junior Instructors.

Terms of Appointment

The work period starts June 25th and can continue until Aug 31st, 2018. Full time hours will be approximately Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Remuneration

$14.15 per hour x 40 hours/week. To be paid out according to the calendar set by UBC payroll.

You will be asked for your previous work experience as well as a resume and short video of you teaching a science/engineering topic. You must apply via this form.   2. Make sure you are available May 29th and May 30th for Interviews. Successful applicants will receive an emailed invitation to the interview by Monday May 28th. Only under extenuating circumstances will an alternative interview date be offered.
