LWVSJ Observer Corps: SJI Fire District September 10, 2023

At the meeting opening the commissioners went into executive session to discuss a matter with legal counsel.

In open session, the Commission passed a resolution to appoint the Fire Chief as the claims agent for the fire and rescue district. Claims are to be submitted on a standard tort claim form in person or by regular or certified mail, with return receipt requested.

The commissioners suggested a salary range be $135-150,000, similar to the Orcas and Lopez fire chiefs, for the job announcement to recruit a new fire Chief for San Juan Island. The commissioners planned to post it within a few weeks with a closing date of November 30. The top five qualified candidates would be interviewed on Skype to develop a short list of two or three candidates to interview further with the aim of having someone on board in January-February.

The remainder of the meeting focused on finances and staff reports.
