
Sound View Camp
Position: Roving Leader (Rover)
Reports to: Camp Director
Purpose of Position
To help supervise, provide care for, and be a positive role model for campers. To cultivate a safe environment where campers can grow in faith. To help plan and facilitate activities, and all other aspects of daily camp life. To prepare oneself for paid leadership positions.
Qualifications
- Must have completed sophomore or junior year of high school.
- Have exceptional ability to understand and relate well to others- especially children.
- Be a team player. Be flexible.
- Willing to participate in and or lead camp activities.
- Be positive, outgoing, and enthusiastic.
- Be patient, sensitive and accepting of oneself and of others.
- Willing to do whenever benefits Sound View Camp and the summer camp program.
Relationships
- All positions are under the supervision of the Camp Director.
- Works directly under the supervision of the Summer Program Director.
- First contact for guidance and support is the Summer Program Director.
- Works as a part of the Sound View team alongside other seasonal and full-time staff.
- Works with campers under supervision.
- Works with adults and families directly
Responsibilities (Including but not limited to the following)
- Assists with overnight camp as a helper for a cabin leader.
- Share leadership responsibilities when appropriate.
- Plan and lead camp activities.
- Helps coordinate Sojourners program (neckerchiefs).
- Reside on-site for the summer program.
- Attend and participate in a spring weekend training
- Attend all staff meetings and all meals.
- Help plan and implement “All Camp” activities.
- Assist Summer Program Director with various duties pertaining to the family campground.
- Assists in the camp kitchen as scheduled.
- Perform other duties as designated by Summer Program Director and Camp Director.
Specific Duties
- Attend a pre-session staff meeting.
- Prepare for the welcoming of campers prior to the beginning of the session. This includes:
- Preparing clean living spaces.
- Learning names and ages of campers.
- Coordinating a successful first day experience, including
- Assisting with check-in as directed,
- Helping campers locate cabins and carry belongings,
- Learning names,
- Awareness of campers’ specific needs and health issues (meeting with Camp Nurse) as necessary,
- Orientation hikes,
- Assisting campers with skill activity sign-ups,
- Helping create a much-anticipated and successful routine for cabin group activities and evening vespers.
- Managing the day-to-day activities for campers
- Getting enough sleep to wake up with the earliest of campers,
- Motivate campers to get prepared for the day,
- Participate with campers in the Morning Gathering,
- Eat breakfast with the campers.
- Helping implement a cabin group time activity including cleaning living spaces. Use this time to reinforce what was learned during the morning gathering.
- If scheduled, teach a morning skill activity with a mixed group of campers following the lesson plan.
- If scheduled, teach an afternoon skill activity with a mixed group of campers following the lesson plan.
- Eat dinner with campers
- Help run the all-camp activities after dinner as planned.
- Help plan effective vesper activities / Bible study /camper goals / cabin campfire to close out the day.
- Prepares for successful conclusion of the session,
- Help run the Sojourners ceremonies.
- Helps with Saturday morning wakeup and pack-up to minimize lost and found and cabin cleanup,
- Participates in Saturday worship with campers,
- Assists with the check-out procedures as assigned by the Summer Program Director.
- Attend a post-session staff meeting.
Effect on End Result
Overnight campers will have a fun, safe, educational faith-building experience. Campers will set and achieve goals. Camper retention will increase. Rovers will develop skills that prepare them to become cabin leaders.
