Toolbox Initiative is a non- profit organization that distributes tools and materials to working jewelers in West Africa.
Imagine a jeweler in West Africa hammering away at their designs in a provisional open air studio. They own only a few essential tools handed down through generations such as a hammer, pliers, tweezers and some other odds and ends that are kept in a handmade toolbox. This jeweler relies on their ingenuity because commercial tools are rarely available. The Toolbox Initiative aims to address this imbalance by hand delivering new tools and support to these jewelers in West Africa.
In the last three years Tim McCreight, an esteemed metalsmith, instructor, and author, has worked with jeweler and author Matthieu Cheminée to organize a volunteer program called the Toolbox Initiative. This program has greatly improved the lives of skilled craftsmen while also preserving their unique way of fabricating jewelry.
Tim and Matthieu “hope that the exchange forges important connections and deepens the bond between jewelers everywhere. The goal is to assist jewelers with limited resources through the collective strength of the metalworking community and to create new connections worldwide.”
Creative Side Jewelry Academy of Austin invites you to come spend the afternoon with Tim McCreight as he speaks about the Toolbox Initiative and his career as a metalsmith and instructor. Tim will do a demonstration on tool-making, with a Q&A session and book signing to follow.
Donations of hand tools (new and old) are welcomed. Please no large equipment. Rather than shipping freight containers full of rolling mills and other heavy-duty equipment, the Toolbox Initiative focuses on small, frequently used items like files, pliers, tweezers and ring clamps. Each Toolbox representative is responsible for two suitcases loaded with 50 pounds of tools a piece—the maximum weight they can carry without paying airline baggage fees. Then, one by one, every item is personally handed to a jeweler.
50% of ticket sales will be donated to the Toolbox Initiative. Reserve your ticket at https://toolboxinitiative.eventbrite.com
