Discharge Surgery Neck and Jawline Liposuction

  1. After your procedure we will use gauze and a facial wrap to dress the area. Keep the facial wrap on 24 hours a day for 2 weeks. For an additional 4 weeks wear the wrap as you are able, just at home or at night.

  1. Apply bacitracin to the incision areas behind the ear and under the chin twice a day. You can cover these with gauze to keep the wrap from rubbing off the ointment as needed.

  1. Cleanse the treated areas gently with mild soap such as Cetaphil or CeraVe or Elta MD Foaming Facial Cleanser available from our office after 48 hours. Avoid drying or irritating facial or body products including Retinol and acids (Salicylic, Glycolic, etc.) or lotions. Do not rub or irritate the area.

  1. Although these effects are rare and temporary, redness and swelling may last up to 3 weeks and are a part of a normal reaction to the treatment.  Bruises occur in some people and last 1 to 2 weeks and are a normal reaction to the treatment.

  1. You may wash your hair 3 days after treatment. For the first 2 weeks use a very gentle shampoo like Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo. After two weeks you can return to your regular hair regimen.

  1. Limit physical activity and exposure to excessive heat (including fires) and UV light.  Sleep on several pillows or in a recliner to keep your head elevated for at least two to three days to help minimize swelling.

  1. Make-up may be applied as soon as 72 hours after the procedure to cover any redness or bruising.   Avoid the incision points that may still be healing. Please wear sunscreen.

  1. Burns and changes in pigmentation are rare although may occur.  If you notice small white bumps, they may take a few weeks to resolve.

  1. Only take prescribed pain medication or Tylenol for pain relief (not both) after your procedure, unless instructed otherwise. Other pain relievers such as Aspirin or NSAIDs (i.e. Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aleve, etc.) can thin the blood and cause bleeding or bruising.

  1. Do NOT drink alcohol for several days as instructed by the doctor after this procedure. Drinking alcohol can negatively affect healing and can cause thinning of the blood, bleeding, crusting and/or bruising.

  1. Do NOT smoke (or vape, or use e-cigarettes, or marijuana) for at least 2 weeks after the procedure. Smoking decreases the amount of oxygen carried by red blood cells and can negatively affect your skin and body’s ability to heal. Skin death and more prominent scarring can result from smoking.

  1. Remember, although the skin has initially healed, it may take a minimum of six weeks before any changes in skin tightening can be perceived AND twelve months before final results in skin tightening can be appreciated.

  1. If you experience fever, chills, drainage, discharge, or extreme discomfort, please contact our office immediately. If you are calling after hours, the answering service will page Dr. Petersen for you.

  1. The patient must have a responsible adult drive them home. The patient should not be overly sedated after this procedure, unless it was done in combination with other procedures under general anesthesia. If for any reason the patient becomes unresponsive, delirious, or you feel like something is seriously wrong and needs immediate attention, call 911 and/or go immediately to the nearest ER.
