Waimea Tramping Club Programme – June-September 2019

When planning to go on any trips please contact the leader by Monday night for an overnight trip and by Thursday night for a day trip.  Make phone calls before 9pm please. If you are staying in a hut, remember your hut tickets! You, NOT THE CLUB, are responsible for your safety and well-being on trips.

Take 4WD vehicles on a barge from French Pass to Kapowai and stay at the D’Urville Island Community Hall for day trips. The cost for barge is about $300 return per vehicle and the cost for accommodation for the whole group is about $60 per night.

In Okiwi Bay Scenic Reserve climb Goat Hill, taking 2 hours. Walk down road 10 minutes to a private property. From a shed, climb through native bush to a hut taking 1 hour then to a peak at 576m, a further 30 minutes. Return via loop track to the road and back to the cars. Approx. 6 hours overall.

Stay Friday and Saturday nights at the spacious Mataki Lodge. Cost $30 or $35 per person, per night depending on numbers. Trips to Mole Saddle (3½-4 hours) via Jamieson Ridge Track and return, or the option of returning down Mole Creek. Another trip up Watson Creek Track as far as time allows and returning the same way.

From the Hacket carpark walk to the Whispering Falls. There is a small stream to cross; be prepared for wet feet. Wonderful photo opportunities on a frosty morning. Can then explore the bush above the falls.

From Inwood Lookout walk over North Ridge and down into the headwaters of the Left Branch Motueka River, then up to Hunters Hut (8 bunks, $5 hut ticket) taking 4½-5 hours. Stay the night and return the same way.

Ascend either via the steep Scout Track or the gentle Involution Trail, then traverse to Parachute (Pt 604) for lunch and views. Descend via Glider Road. A circuit of about 5 hours.

From the Maitai Dam go up past the Rush Pool to Dew Lakes then along the Bryant Range to Maungatapu Saddle. From here turn down the Maungatapu Track back to the Maitai Dam. A circuit taking about 8 hours.

From the Cobb Dam follow a wide track zigzagging up through the beech forest to the open tops to Sylvester Hut. (12 bunks, $15 hut ticket) taking 2 hours. Then explore Lake Sylvester and Iron Hill depending on the snow.

Water-taxi from Marahau to Bark Bay (approximate cost $42), and then walk back along the beautiful Abel Tasman Coast Track to the cars. 26km of easy walking, taking about 7 hours.

Starting at Easby Park, Marlborough Crescent, Richmond, this is a devious route that will give you a good workout while taking in views from Richmond Lookout and admiring the Barrington Gum and other giant native trees. Some steep sections. About 6 hours.

Crossover trip - one group starts at Brook Street on Saturday morning, walking back to the Maitai Dam on Sunday and the other group vice-versa. Sunday morning option, weather-willing, climb to the summit of Dun Mountain then walk out.
