Thomas Viaduct Middle School: Vision and Mission

School Targets and Strategies

Thomas Viaduct Middle School (TVMS) epitomizes the best in middle level education by providing instruction and real world experiences that equip students to achieve their fullest potential. At TVMS, we raise and purposefully develop each unique strength for students and staff so we can influence others and create an innovative and nurturing learning environment for all.

 Mathematics Targets:

  • Increase the number of African American students scoring 4 or 5 on PARCC by 2.88%

Instructional Strategies:

  • Instructional staff will engage in professional development to support collaborative planning and classroom visits (instructional rounds) in order to implement evidence-based formative assessment techniques (e.g., questioning strategies, observations, interviews, prompting students to use alternative representations, hinge questions, and exit tasks) (Danielson 1e, 1f, 3e).
  • Instructional staff will provide time for students to struggle with high-cognitive demand tasks and ask questions that scaffold students' thinking without intervening and/or doing the work for them (1e, 2a, 3d, 3e).

Literacy Targets:

  • Increase the total number of students scoring 4 or 5 on PARCC by 2.31%
  • Increase the total number of African American students scoring 4 or 5 on PARCC by 2.4%

  • Instructional staff will provide time for students to struggle with high-cognitive demand tasks and ask questions that scaffold students' thinking without intervening and/or doing the work for them. (1e, 2a, 3d, 3e)

Student Conduct Targets:

  • Decrease the number of total referrals for our African American group by 5%

Cultural Strategies:

  • Staff will create a culture in their classroom where students feel included and valued by engaging in community and instructional circles, celebrating diversity, and cultivating and deepening sustainable positive relationships with each other.
  • Students, teachers and families have the opportunity to participate in decision making by providing the opportunity to participate in groups that elevate and include all voices for stakeholders including, but not limited to, the Principal’s Advisory Group, SGA and PTSA, and TVMS “One Voice.”
