From the Principal……

Big turnout to Collins Open House!

We thank everyone for coming to our annual Open House this past Monday, April 8. Every classroom was packed with families browsing throughout the rooms reading students’ narratives, expository writing, opinion, persuasive writing, and poetry displayed by the students. I enjoyed watching all of our students sharing their creative work and describing the challenges they overcame to master their assignments.

Our Book Fair was also filled with families leafing through the pages of the hundreds of books on display and on sale. I saw many happy students leaving the fair with books they couldn’t wait to start reading. That’s what a principal loves to see! Thank you for support our Book Fair.

Collins CAASPP testing begins April 23

For students in grades 3-5, testing will begin the week of April 23 and finish by May 17.  Each grade level has set dates to test in the different subject areas.  Please do not schedule any appointments or trips out of town for your children during testing sessions.  Independent Study Contracts will not be given during the test window.

Students will take multiple assessments, including a computer adaptive test in English Language Arts and Math, a Performance Task in English Language Arts and in Math. Students in 3rd-5th grade will be required to type responses, as the assessment is completed on the computer using a secure online browser.

Please be sure to support your student by having him/her practice typing skills at home. If you do not have your login information for Typing Club, a web-based typing practice service provided by the Cupertino Union School District, please contact the teacher for that information.

Students need earbuds for testing

We are also requesting earbuds for your child.  Please provide earbuds to your child so that your child can take the tests and listen to the instructions without distractions from their neighbors or classroom surroundings.

In order to give students the energy needed during the testing sessions, please ensure that your student gets plenty of sleep and eats a healthy breakfast, snack, and lunch. If they are showing any symptoms of seasonal allergies, please give your child medication before school, if necessary.

April 25 Take your child to work day

Take Your child to work day is scheduled for Thursday, April 25. We know that some of you are planning to take your children to work with you on that day. Please be sure to notify the office staff a few days before the event. We also need to inform you that the third grade and fourth grade will continue testing on that day. We need to complete the testing within a certain time period and are unable to adjust the testing dates.

PTA Honorary Service Awards Nominations now being accepted

Challenge: CUSD has above average schools and below average funding.

CUSD schools rank among the highest in the world. CUSD students attend prestigious universities, work at Silicon Valley’s elite technology companies, and change the world every day.

And yet, CUSD receives below average funding per student -- approximately $5,000 less per student than the national average.

Solution: CUSD25: We’re In It Together!

The solution is a unified, district-wide funding initiative, lead by Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF), to continue to provide extraordinary teachers and staff, as well as teaching supplies, to benefit ALL 25 SCHOOLS and create an equitable educational experience for all CUSD students.

We invite you to invest $25 per month per student to support CUSD25. Please sign up at, or complete and return the CUSD25 donation form your child will bring home this week. Our goal is to have all families contribute to support our excellent schools. Let’s show everyone what we can do when We’re In It Together! Our children deserve it!

All of us at CUSD and CEEF want to thank you in advance for your contribution!
